Moderator's Report

A win in the Works shows Al H is swimming with the big fish now and puts him at the top of the table at the halfway point.
Over in the Privates Bernie had a second succesive win leaving the pressure on Vos who has a small margin at the top.
Two reported incidents in the Privates (see below).
One reminder, where we are on one grid there are actually two races taking place, there's no rule that says you can't race but bear in mind you won't gain any places against a driver in a different division.

Server replay time: 0h03m47s

Nigel closes on Billy and makes a pass into the corner.
Nigel was almost side by side when Billy turns in.
Contested Overtake : Racing Incident

Advice would be take care and be aware who is around you. If the car behind can't be seen it is probably in your blind spot.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h31m27s

Billy passes Vos into the corner but in doing so goes wide leaving a gap for a repass.
There is then a coming together with Billy going slightly right and Vos a tad too far left.
Contested Overtake : Racing incident, but keep an eye on those mirrors - if you can't see the car assume it's alongside you.

  • Racing incident

A visit to Sweden takes us to the half way point, this track has been visited once before in season 18, Gold. In the Works Evil leads Al H, whilst in the Privateeers Vosblod leads Mr Nobrakes.

Race List = IGOR
Server = UKGPL_T7_2
IP address = 62.149.202.168
Race date = 23-05-2010
Time = 21:00 UK time
Track = Anderstorp
Variant = 67F1
Damage Model = PRO
Qualifying time = 35 minutes. Don't start until 30 mins left on clock to allow everyone to join.
Race length = 50 minutes (laps 34)

Password: see above

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page
The track can be downloaded from : http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=4340
Add-on’s available at : http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=231

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:50 pm UK Time

Reserve drivers should not join the server until there are only 30 minutes of qualifying left. Please restrict chat to pit messages. Moderating will be by reported incidents only, however the moderators reserve the right to review any incident with a particular emphasis on lap one. The aim is to review the race the following weekend so incident reports should be submitted within five days of the race (ie the following Friday). We're hopeful most incidents can be resolved amicably and recommend a days deep breath with a replay review before posting. A sorry in the forum won't be taken as an automatic admission of guilt by the moderators.

With the token system chassis strategy will be a factor. A driver must have sufficient tokens for the chassis he drives in the race.  Any driver who does not have sufficient tokens will be disqualified from the result and his tokens will be set to zero.

Chassis costs;
Lotus 20 / Eagle 17 / Ferrari 15 / Brabham 10 / Cooper 5 / Honda 3 / BRM 0

To see your current tokens hover your mouse over your total points on the championship standings page. Ten tokens will be added when you cross the start line.

The Championship is split into two sub-divisions, namely Works and Privateers. The driver split will be;

NOTE: In the event of more then 19 entrants a second grid will be run for the Privateers on ukgpl.5. (ping myjamesonline.net) Instructions will be provided in the chatroom – please ensure you join the correct server, due to the way we import if you start the race on the wrong server your result will not count. If you can try to make sure you are in the chatroom by 8.50pm this will enable a decision without any delays to the start time.

The track was built on marshlands in 1968 and became an extremely popular venue in the 1970s, just as Swede Ronnie Peterson was at the height of his career. It had a long straight (called Flight Straight, which was also used as an aircraft runway), as well as several banked corners, making car setup an engineering compromise. The raceway hosted six Formula One Swedish Grand Prix events in the '70s. When Peterson and Gunnar Nilsson died during the 1978 Formula One season, public support for the event dried up and the Swedish Grand Prix came to an end.

Practice Server is up if anyone wants to test their connection.  There are 6 AI cars running to test the loose grid - post here if you think the grid is still too tight.  Want to avoid the potential for a L1 T1 shunt if we can.

My race was a ding dong battle with soggy teamy Mike , we made contact a couple of times and took it in turns spinning off , Mike losing a few while trying to get the power down to early , me while testing the brakes . In the end I had one less spin than Mike and won what was the toughest GPL battle i've had for a long time .

Sorry if we held the front men up during lappery we was kind of locked in combat  Roll Eyes

Grats to Al and the podium.

I guess I really threw away the chance of getting some points here.

I had done a few laps of practice here and decided that this circuit had not been designed with Wazamobiles in mind. I was cooking my left side tyres within about 5 laps and only getting into the 1:38's on race fuel. Usually I can persuade the white whale to get within about 2-3 secs of the WR ( 1:33) banzai lap, but at Anderstorp I thought that I was going to be way off the pace.

Qually was therefore quite a relief Roll Eyes when I discovered that even Al in his Lotus was only getting 1:37's and there were a lot of people playing token saving games with the BRM, which elevated my start position to 2nd!!!
I wondered if I could outdrag Al down to T1 and control the race from the front...ha! some chance with the whale fully fuelled and against a Lotus  Undecided. so I tucked in behind and waited for the tyres to warm up. I had modified the setup during practice in an attempt to control the tyre temps and I wanted to see if it was working.
Apologies to Al and everyone else for the chaos at the hairpin on lap 1. Al braked a little harder than I had anticipated and was slower through the apex. As a result I think I gave him the merest of "love taps" on his rear which, instead of firing him into orbit as is usual with GPL, caused him to just spin through 90 degrees and form a perfect road block. I had nowhere to go with a wall of Lotus across my bows and had to stop whilst Al recovered..I suspect that there was some interruption to normal service behind me Cool
 I trailed the Lotus for a few laps as  Al dragged us away from the chasing pack. When the gap reached around 6 secs I decided that Al was having it too easy and closed up behind him to try and exert some pressure as it seemed that my setup change was keeping the tyre temps down.
I found that I could get onto his tail easily and could take the apexes of the corners a little quicker, but I just could not match the acceleration of his Lotus!!?? For several laps I hounded him hoping for a mistake, there were a few wobbles but nothing that I could exploit.
Then I got just a little too close under braking for the T3 and rather than rear end Al, I put a wheel on the grass... the rest is history, as the long slide across the grass ended with a 3 wheeled waza resting against the armco.
Maybe I should have been more patient???

Grats to all the finishers.

Stunned by my result here if I'm frank!  Shocked

As with Nigel I hadn't even downloaded the track come 9 o clock as I'd confused it with Nivelles somehow, therefore I choose the BRM as didn't want to waste tokens on a 'no hoper'  ninja

Joined the server just as it hit the 30 minute mark and set about converting the BRM setup that came with the track to something that might actually survive a race and would suit my style (really didn't like the diff settings and the gears were way too short).
With 5 minutes to go I was happy and threw myself out on low fuel load to try and get a bit further up the grid. I both succeeded and failed as I went faster but remained in 8th  Roll Eyes

At the start I was gifted a huge climb through the ranks when seemingly half the field ahead bogged down allowing me to leap straight to 5th before even reaching T1  angel
All was then looking good for a drawn out battle until I reached Clive and Al's roadblock, where my avoiding actions onto the grass dropped me 2 places again - luckily I made them back up very quickly.
Steve B1rd was causing me a great deal of worry for the first 10 laps or so until we caught King Hiro, (big) thanks to Nige I jumped hiro on the runway without really loosing my stride while Steve was caught for another lap before he also got by. This gave me a buffer of a couple of seconds which I managed to eek out slightly longer over the course of the race.

Other than getting a bit close to Ronnie near the start of the race I was all good for a clean race - unfortunatly I clipped my own team mate while passing Bill in Gislaved after the Karrusel (my replay shows a lag hit as what span him with the only 'real' contact being billy's nose spinning into me, will need to see the server replay to be totally sure).
As said, massively sorry Billy I just didn't expect you to stand on the brakes quite like that!
Aside from that moment of exitement it was then just a hard slog to the line.

Big well done to Al for the win, and to Steve for a well deserved podium place. Also well done to all finishers and commiserations to those who visited the barriers to much  Cool

I suffered a complete freeze during quali necessitating a reboot and so started the race expecting it not to last very long but fortunately did not experience any further technical problems during the race. My only problem was Bernie who insisted on piling on the pressure  - just what you need at the end of the hottest and stickiest day of the year sweatdrop

As Bernie said, some very close racing with both cars surviving a bump or three along the way and a few more points for what is now a sadly depleted Soggies team.

Really happy to have won this Smiley Having moved up to race with the big boys in Works & Ams I wasn't expecting too much this season so this result really felt great.

Took a punt on the Lotus & that proved a fortunate choice... Had a bit of trouble getting a clear lap in qually but towards the end of the session sneaked ahead of Clive to take my first senior division pole. The Lotus was a bit of a handful on cold tyres & full tanks so took the first lap rather gingerly - a tad too gingerly it seems as I got a little 'hurry-up' nudge on the backside from Clive's Honda Wink This left me somewhat sideways & blocking the track so I pulled forward to clear the traffic jam (& after watching my replay noticed that I slightly clipped Rick's Brabham as he nipped in the gap. Very sorry Rick - didn't see you coming through Sad).

Clive's fundoshi must have got snagged onto the rear of my car during our previous incident as despite me pulling away down the straights, every time I braked I could see the Honda looming ever closer in my mirrors. After several laps of intense pressure, Clive's fundoshi finally seemed to snap & he flew past me under braking for T3. I actually thought Clive's accelerator pot had got stuck open as he seemed to be going full pelt through the braking zone - thanks for taking avoiding action though!

After Clive's demise I had a 5 or 6 second lead so I just concentrated on keeping it on track & trying not to overstress the fragile Lotus. Had a few heartstopping moments on the way, including laying down about a 100m of black tyre marks when Nigel braked unexpectedly ahead. Thanks to the guys being lapped for giving me room though. My 5th gear seemed a bit short down the long runway so I was expecting the engine to pop every lap but somehow my luck held Grin.

Congratulations to FMG & Steve on the podium & to all the finishers. Good haul of points for the 'once-great' Clark-Hill team Wink

I think that what you witnessed Al, is a well known rule of physics that whenever a car in motion hits ice or a slippery surface with all 4 wheels locked up...it accelerates!! Especially if it is white with a red stripe  Roll Eyes

The vision problems that virtually put paid to my sim racing career last Autumn are now largely under control.

At the last dog, I tried to enter this event but without registering, I didn't have the pword.  Tried everything logical to the Swedish race but no joy.  Ah, well...

With any luck, I'll be on the grid for Mosport in two weeks time, my home circuit!

CYA then?  Smiley

Well a rubbish race for me, I just couldn't get the braking right and went off too many times.  Eventually lost a wheel to the armco.

Grats to Mike and Bernie in an exciting race :-) and to Steve Bird on another impressive drive a podium and fastest lap!!!

Thanks Phil Smiley

Yes, an enjoyable race and pleased with a podium, and surprised at the FL.

I had done a fair few laps some time ago while working on my GPLRank, it seems to have paid off.  Actually my FL in this race wasn't a PB!!

The bit I am disappointed with is the several unforced mistakes.  I overtook and promptly gave back the place to Tom at least 3 times trying very hard to lose 3rd place!  In the end I was fortunate Tom was not driving to the best of his normal ability and along with kindly giving me plenty of room and not challenging my passes, had a few offs himself to eventually give me a reasonable distance.  Even then I had to try a few more times to give up the podium.  Thankfully not hitting anything hard and keeping the car in one piece.

Anyway, in the end I got lucky and finished a distant 3rd.

Thanks to the backmarkers for the room and easy passes.

Many congratulations to Al for an impressive win and a good drive from Tim too for 2nd.  Also a round of pies to Bernie for a piv's win.
