Moderator's Report

The first 66 race in the Spec Challenge proved to be a something of a firey encounter.

Server replay time: 0h01m17s

Jethro runs into the back of King Hiro. On the first lap at Zandvoort there will always be a concertina effect going through the twisty section after T1 & drivers should take due care.
Blantant rear end shunt - 2 places + additional place for Lap 1 incident.

Server replay time: 0h13m11s

Maddog looks to slow down to slot in behind Al Hellar but his overbraking causes the car to spin & whilst there is no direct contact the warp takes out Al.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h20m28s

Jethro is lapping Billy but hits the rear end of Billy's car in the exit to last turn (as per server replay). Whilst faster cars should not be unecessarily held up there is a time & place for safe overtaking.
Rear end shut - 1 penalty place.

Server replay time: 0h22m08s

Nigel is recovering from desparately trying to avoid an overturned car. His car settles facing across the track with cars bearing down on him. His attempt to move clear impedes Al Hellar. Under the circumstances it is usually best to remain stationary until the track is clear. Pressing f10 gives a better view to assist recovering drivers.

My sympathies to the 66 regulars/front runners, who had to survive the scattered debris, thrown down by those of us of dubious experience.

I actually bailed out of race 1, as my car was misbehaving badly.  Nonetheless, a new on-line experience, and the chance to explore the blow up parameters of two 66 motors! "Grumble!"

Managed to survive race 2, though fighting an uneven set of brakes, which Al got the worst of. Undecided  But much fun had, both on, and er . . . off the track, and a good excuse to finally grapple with these cars.  In my case, I think the cars won!

The question is....am I getting faster, or is Hristo getting slower?Huh Shocked

Thanks again to Billy, this series does seem to produce some close racing and great fun. It's funny, because I know that this is a "real" championship with points to be won and lost, but somehow I still treat it as " fun" races and approach them with a relaxed frame of mind.
Perhaps it is just my brain cell refusing to process any more league tables???

You sure are getting faster and I think I just reached my peak a while ago and am trying to keep at it. And yeah, it's the same for me, I approach them as fun races and it helps a lot for performance. A lesson to be learned for sure, though you can't just force to relax once you've already put pressure on yourself, lol.

As for the race, I think the others said most of it. For me the McLaren was definitely faster, it was about as fast without slipstream as the Eagle with slipstream, according to lap times anyway.

One thing I want to bring up again is backmarkers - 5 of the 6 backmarkers I passed in one of the races made big mistakes. Is it panic or just lack of experience, I don't know, but it wasn't a nice experience and it nearly cost me the race a couple of times. Only Bernie behaved properly, but it can be expected from a former champ!

Would that be the year Phil went on holiday and gifted me the cup  Grin

As for the correct behaviour in being lapped , all I can say is that practise makes perfect , I seem to be reaching expert status on the subject these days  Cheesy

Sympathise with Vos though as often its a gut reaction and escpecially if you are locked in battle with one or more cars when the situation  can  become a little confused  Roll Eyes

Though I wouldn't want to see anyone give you the Nelson Piquet "Monza Handshake"  Hristo

Toned down my response as don't want to implicate anyone  Wink
Gist is I find there are some who plan an overtake/lapping and some that are (ahem) in a bit more of a hurry and you're not sure where they'll try to pass. Combine that with not having time to check Prib for who is behind you and being lapped can sometimes get tricky.

A few general points here worthy of a comment.
Format of the Spec Races will stay "as is" this season but we can look at changes next season.
1. Championship v Fun Races. Personally I regard the Spec Races more in the fun category than the 65 or 67 championships. Those sparring for top places in the table would be entitled to a different view.
2. Swapping Spec Races with Historics. This can be done although it may have a bearing depending which other leagues people compete in. Generally I have opted for tracks that are well known or not too challenging to learn. On the other hand people are having to adapt to different cars.
3. Mixed abilities. Six rounds into the Spec season and we have run single grids for five of them. Being an Int Short race lapping is quite infrequent. Zandvoort was a bit of an exception beacause there were a number of drivers (including me) who had never raced 66 cars before. Seems less of an issue for 65s'. We have a 67 race at Spa and a 69 and Monza 10K - in view of the length of tracks shouldnt be too much lapping. I think the novice drivers generally do their best not to impede the lapping cars BUT there is also some inconsistent behaviour with some of the faster drivers. (Fairly rare I should add).

Still playing catch-up with the stats - here's the updated tables from the last race. Perfect consistency score would be 70.

Is my consistency meister thingy right for races 7 & 8? (Porto I think)
It was far from being a good pair of races for me in the consistency front, but 0 and 1.07  Huh

Or is it just because the race had a fairly low 'perfect' score  Smiley

I've rechecked the Statmeister Supercomputer & those figures appear to be correct so I'm guessing you must have had incidents or stop & go pitstops in both races? In race 1 you had an average deviation of 5.473 (anything over 5 seconds falls outside the cutoff so scores "0") & in race 2 you were very close to the cutoff with 4.866. The perfect score is only there for reference; ultimately the closer you get to the 5 second average deviation cutoff the worse proportionally you will score.

Don't forget we will drop your worst 2 scores though (or should that be worst 4 scores for Spec Races?)

For purpose of the Championship the lowest 4 results are discounted BUT how you want to apply the Statmeister scoring is up to up you. For "Consistency" you could argue that all 20 races should count - just to be consistent!

Chassis comparison results now in from stat Control. Mclaren shades it, but by a fine margin.

You have to keep in mind that race times are most often influenced by slipstream (which is huge in 66 mod) and so they're not really objective. Without slipstream the McLaren was half a second faster than the Eagle for me.
