Moderator's Report

SUMMARY
An action packed race with Hristo doing just enough to claim another hard fought victory in the BT7. He was pushed very hard by runner-up Natan and third placed finisher Goran.

There was a report of a driver starting practice before the 30 minutes to go deadline. There was no evidence of this on the server replay but drivers are reminded not to start practice before the 30 minutes to go deadline.

Despite the vast number of yellow cards he has accrued, Jethro has not learnt from his mistakes and still lacks the race craft necessary to race on-line without risking contact with other drivers. This number of yellow cards warrants more than a routine race ban and consequently the ban is extended to all UKGPL league races for the remainder of Season 19.

Server replay time: 0h01m15s

Lap 1 – Turn 2B - Tim Muttram and Nicky Ickx

Tim puts a wheel on the grass on the exit of turn 2B. He looses the rear and manages to avoid a spin but he can’t stay on the tarmac and consequently takes to the grass on the approach to turn 3. He then tries to rejoin on the outside of Turn 3 as the tail-end of the pack are barrelling through. Warp contact is made with Nicky and Tim is punted back onto the grass.

Tim tried to join gradually but there was always going to be a problem trying to rejoin so close to the racing line with a gaggle of drivers approaching. There has to be a little give and take in situations like this. The pack should anticipate that the car was going to rejoin and allowed some leeway. Equally, Tim should have waited until he was absolutely certain it was safe to join. In this case it would have meant driving a little further along the grass until the racing line was well away from the edge of the track or waiting until all the pack had passed.

In the event warp intervened before any genuine contact was made and only Tim was disadvantaged.

Server replay time: 0h02m02s

Lap 1 – Turn 8 - Podkrecony Ziutek and Nicky Ickx

Podkrecony gets a better exit out of Moss and pulls along side Nicky on the approach to the jump. Nicky keeps the inside line but Podkrecony is clearly ahead as they enter turn 8. Nicky has yielded and does not try to contest the corner but the cars are quite close and warp contact is made sending Podkrecony off the circuit.

Although clearly ahead, Podkrecony could not see Nicky in his mirrors at turn-in so he couldn’t be sure where Nicky was. Podkrecony was entitled to take the racing line but it was a risky tactic, the car on the outside is always vulnerable to warp. It would have been better to stay slightly wider until he could clearly see Nicky in his mirrors.

Warp incident.

Server replay time: 0h02m29s

Lap 1– Turn 1 - Fulvio Policardi and Nicky Ickx

Fulvio is challenging King Hiro for position but gets out of shape under braking for turn 1 and ends up taking to the grass on the inside. He manages to maintain control but slows considerably before trying to rejoin on the apex of the corner just as Nicky is driving past. Contact is made and Nicky pushed off the track loosing several places in the process.

Rejoining on the apex of a corner is clearly asking for trouble. Fulvio should have stayed on the grass until the exit of the corner when the racing line would have been on the other side of the track.

Server replay time: 0h03m15s

Lap 2 – Moss - Podkrecony_Ziutek and Nicky Ickx

Podkrecony simply gets too close to Nicky on the entry to Moss and rear ends him.

This incident was exacerbated by warp but there was clear contact on the server. Without the warp intervention Nicky would have been nudged into a spin at worst but the GPL collision engine saw fit to obliterate both cars. Podkrecony was at fault but the incident was far more severe than his actions dictated. However this cannot exonerate Podkrecony and consequently a penalty must be applied.

Server replay time: 0h06m04s

Lap 4 – Moss - Jethro Walters and Al Heller

Jethro is managing to keep up with Al, but the performance of his Cooper doesn’t allow him to mount a realistic challenge for the place. He needs to be patient and wait for a mistake from Al. As they approach Moss, Al takes a wide line but it is not a mistake and he doesn’t loose any momentum. Jethro takes a tight line which appears to present him with an opportunity to outbrake Al into Moss. However this is an illusion, Al clearly has the lead at turn in and there is no way Jethro can claim the corner. Contact is inevitable and Al is punted into a spin.

This isn’t a passing place unless there is a vast difference in abilities between the drivers (there clearly wasn’t here as their pace was well matched) or the leading driver makes a serious mistake and takes to the grass.

Season 19 Amateurs Trophy - Round 6 - Mosport

An early race announcement but this race marks the start of the second half of the season so review of the chassis allocation is in order.  Tim Muttram and Clive Gardner are dominating the championship so it is only fair that they are moved to a slower chassis.

The track was designed and built in the late 1950s, and held its first major race in 1961, the Player's 200, a sports car race bringing drivers from the world over to rural Ontario. Stirling Moss won the event in a Lotus 19. The proposed hairpin was expanded into two discrete corners, to be of greater challenge to the drivers and more interesting for the spectators, at his suggestion, and is named Moss Corner in his honour. This is a source of lingering confusion as many people call the track Mossport. It has had a succession of owners since the original public company created to build the track. Mosport achieved acclaim though a series of international sports car races under the title "Canadian Grand Prix" normally reserved for Formula 1 races. F1's Grand Prix of Canada remained at the track until 1977.
Unlike many historic motorsport venues, Mosport's track layout has remained mostly unchanged from its original form.

Reserve drivers should not join until there are only 30 mins of qualifying left and all drivers should not go out on track until there are 30 minutes of qualifying left as this helps all drivers join the server successfully.

Please restrict chat to pit messages only including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Don't forget to use the updated 65 mod for this race.

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page

We have split the cars into groups based on average performance and split the drivers into groups based on average ability. The chassis numbers for Amateurs are as follows:

AMATEUR CHASSIS GROUPS
1 - Lotus, Ferrari
2 - BRM, Honda
3 - BT11
4 - Cooper
5 - BT7

Each driver has been given a seeding number and must pick a chassis with either an equal number or higher number but not a lower number. For example, if a driver is given a seeding of 2, he must pick one of the cars in group 2 (BRM or Honda) but if he would prefer to drive either the BT11, Cooper or BT7 he may do so. This means that a driver given a seeding of 1 can pick any chassis he prefers.

**NOTE**
Whichever chassis a driver begins his first race with is the chassis he must use for the remainder of the season unless a change has been agreed with the moderator.

Here's hoping I can lug the Cooper around here respectably. I loved this track with the Lotus and BT11 cars.

3 collisions defined my race.

#1 was my own mistake - span on the exit of T3 when I misjudged where the car was in relation to the super-slippy grass. Did a full 360 and rejoined right in front of evilclive. Absolutely sod-all I could do other than hope I didn't hit anybody/anything, so just my luck I get rear-ended for a change.

#2 confused me - I followed Al for a couple of laps and he was a lot slower than previous laps through Moss and wide of the first apex. Through the littlest straight I was alongside and aimed for the inside. Al turned in on me and spun.

#3 was the race ender - screwed up the 3rd-last corner at the end of the back straight, got the car up to speed and pointing in the right direction, quickly checked Pribluda and the direction beside me and joined the track. Made it through to the 2nd-last corner with Tim having passed already and Bob on my outside, and while I stayed tight he saw fit to run me off the road. Cheers for that, probably a blessing in disguise with the early morning at stake.

In terms of qualifying I'd done well to get the car into the mid 25s with the last lap, which I knew was possible given how comparatively easy it was to get it into the 26s.

Got a good start when Natan forgot where the gearbox was and lined up 3rd behind a very gentile Goran. Tried to remember the old adage - you can't win it at the first corner but you can sure lose it, and was Prib-watching lots on laps 1 and 2.

Will check my replay to confirm things and submit incident reports but my overall assessment - could do better.

One of my worst races ever.

I had a good start and I gained few positions. I was just behind Nicky, I had better exit from Moss and I've passed him on straight. Going into right hander I didn't knew how far away is Nicky, so I stayed on outside line. I feel like I've left enough room on the inside, but we touch and I was spinning on grass.
I've rejoined and quickly catch Nicky and Bernie. I was trying to get close to them, so I made pass afther Moss. Unfortunately I was to close, and going into Moss 2 I Jethro'ed him. That was the end for both of us.

I'm very sorry for that Moss accident. It was 100% my fault.

Finished 9th or 10th i think (not sure, the race is still going on)

First gear was incorrect at the hairpin so was over revving the car. I knew this would be a balancing act, and about 17 laps in it caught me out and i had a gentle spin. A missed 4th gear at the end of the back straight meaning no traction into the right hander meant i glided off and into the hedge. Unfortunately my car was not damaged so i had to continue.

Like most Amateur races, i whiled away the minutes watching Pribluda on the right wondering what it'd be like to closely follow someone, whilst also spending my time looking at the top left of the screen hoping someone might drop out so i could increase my positon. The couple of people who are in my ball park of speed had either retired or not turned up so eventually, i pulled into the pits, and i'm ashamed to say this, out of total boredom.

I'll save my annual 'race length' rant till the end of season review, but even though i love all the GPL tracks, including most of the refreshingly new and long ones this season, i've had enough after 30 or 40 minutes.

Anyway, Sachsenring next - a real classic track.  Wink

Qually and race time spent failing miserably to get the lotus up to speed  Embarrassed culminating in a sick mill after revving its blocks off  :'(

hope i didnt upset too many with my mobile chicane , I thought if I gave it an easy lap or two it might have spluttered back into life but I guess it needed more than a prayer .

enjoyed the opening laps though wasn't sure how the thing would be with full tank , the rest of the race was a drag so not to bothered about taking the early bath  Smiley

Grats to H (looked like a win when I left ) and the rest of you lot  Grin

#2 confused me - I followed Al for a couple of laps and he was a lot slower than previous laps through Moss and wide of the first apex. Through the littlest straight I was alongside and aimed for the inside. Al turned in on me and spun.

I spun? interesting view, as ever Roll Eyes According to my replay Jethro punted me off after launching his car over the inside kerb at Moss & bouncing into me.

Jethro was following very close behind for a while & that makes me (among several other of his regular victims) naturally very wary. So when he disappeared from my mirrors just after the uphill entry to Moss, I assumed he was alongside so took a very wide line to leave him plenty of room in case he was doing one of his banzai moves. I might have been slightly slower through the first RH bend but that's because I was taking a very wide line & trying to avoid contact. Tried to take Moss as wide as possible to leave plenty of room but still got nerfed. Massive shame because I haven't often been in decent positions in Am's & was in 3rd or 4th at the time. Jethro has only done 2 Am's races this season but has still managed to ruin my race in both. Really really getting fed up with this - not sure it's worth all the aggro Sad

Someone has sneakily modified the BT11 that I was getting used to (after my beloved Wazamobile was torn from my clutching fingers at the beginning of the season) and replaced it with a different green thing that makes a lot of noise and that's about all!!!

Qually was as good as ( if not better) than I expected with 6th on grid. Start was a bonus when Natan bogged down and I gained a place. Jethro was hassling Goran up ahead until Goran ran wide and by the start of lap 3 we had a Waza 1-2-3, with Hristo out front.

I thought to myself  " this is good, because I have Jethro IN FRONT where I won't be threatened by his late braking Wink" .  I can sit here for the next 30 laps and wait my chance.

But, Jethro is more skilled than I thought. Because even behind him I was not safe lol.
Exiting T3 he put a wheel on the grass and started spinning. I aimed where Jethro was making donuts in the hope that he would be gone before I got there.
Well he was, gone that is, but the sneaky blighter came back again!!!!! and I ended up spinning on that slippery Canadian grass as the whole field  paraded past and I was dead last....again. This is becoming a habit for me, must try and change this pattern. Undecided

The rest of the race was a chase in my apparently unda, maged Cooper back up through the field until I caught Fulvio and his BT11. Although I was sligthtly faster, and could close up easily I just did not have the grunt to make a pass, and Fulvio never made a big enough mistake to create an opening.
About 15 laps of the race were spent looking at his gearbox until we crossed the line.

Grats to Hristo for the win. SHE will be pleased, just a shame I lost so much time early in the race and could not get near the podium.

To summen up this race: The art of being unhappy with 3rd position.

Grats to H and Natan.

I had a good start from my 3rd on the grid and found myself in second behind H when I noticed that I had Jethro behind me. That is not a position I really like, so I figured that I would make it easy for him to pass, which he did. The only problem was that some other guys followed him through so at the end of the first lap I was down to 5th.

Well, no problem, the race was long and I figured that things were going to happen, they usually do, and they did, so at the end of lap 6 I was back in second position.

The only problem was H. By now he was like 8 sec in front and doing more or less the same laptimes as me so no way I could catch him. But then, on lap 12, all of a sudden he was right in front of me, and the next 10 laps I could easily follow him wondering were I would be able to pass.

Then I did the mistake of the race, I looked at the pitboard and saw that it was 13 laps to go. My mind, my worst enemy, began thinking: "This can never go well", so off it went, my mind that is, to see where the best place to make a mistake were, and it chose the right hander after the long strait. So I went wide and lost sight of H but held on to second position. But my mind likes patterns so the next lap I did the same thing, and this time Natan got past me so now I was in 3rd.

To make the mistakes a triple I messed up when passing a smoking Lotus too but managed to hang on to 3rd although Fulvio  came a bit closer then I would have liked. But as a result I managed to put in the fastest lap of the race, if my replay is correct that is, so at the end of things I guess it went OK.

The problem is that I am getting the smell of victory now that Clive and Tim are put  in more appropriate cars and this time I really had a chance, well I don`t know if H would agree but I never been in a better Position anyway.

At least you had a green whizzy thing Clive!
I was feeling quite pleased with my qually time as it was totally Draft free! Then everyone snuck in faster laps in the final few minutes relegating me to mid field  Sad

Got a good start and gained a place (maybe 2?) in the first few corners and even succeded in avoiding the pileup  Grin

After that I found myself behind Fulvio, who I was ever-so slightly faster than, must have spent nearly 10laps with only inches between my BT7's nose and his gearbox before I finally managed the jump I needed out of Moss to get along side before the hump. Fulvio backed off slightly early and gave me the place rather than fighting for it (as had happened for most corners throughout our battle!  ) which allowed my to carry decent speed into and through the turn, This put me just ahead of Jethro who was rejoining nearly on the apex of the penultimate corner and allowed me to miss out on the accident I knew was about to happen...
About 3 laps later I threw away my incredibly hard fought gains by missing 4th gear at the end of the straight and spinning off onto the beach  Roll Eyes
Fulvio and Clive got passed before I rejoined, I thought 'nevermind, still time to catch them again' only to put a wheel in the grass under braking about half way round the next lap  cursing

Rejoined nearly half a mile behind them and just behind Bob - who may or may not have been on the lead lap (Huh) who I then chased until he binned it into the Armco approaching Moss.
Fairly happy with 6th I guess given the car, but gutted at loosing 4th (If I read Prib right then I may have had the chance to latch onto Goran near the end too Sad )

Was VERY hard to drive at 100% for the hour and a bit of practice/race. I only hope it improves my concentration in the long run - at least I understand how Hristo crashes often even while leading now!
