Moderator's Report

Only one incident - as below.

Server replay time: 0h01m19s

Steve takes a wide line into T1 (Tamborello), although not unexpected as this was Lap 1. Norm has the inside line and a possible passing opportunity but nudges Steve as Steve turns in.
If Steve had waited until he could see Norm in his mirrors then maybe this incident could have been avoided.Equally if Norm (who could actually see Steve) had kept a tighter line by backing off a touch then again the incident could have been avoided.

Season 19 Spec Race Challenge - Round 7 - Imola

Last time out the 66 race was – well – interesting & the first time racing that Mod for several of the Heavy Brigade. Back to the 65’s next Sunday at Imola which is one of my favourite tracks.
In the championship Hristo records another double win, Evil 2nd & FMG 3rd in both events. In the Heavies Steve Bird racks up two more wins. Phil only collects one podium (for a change) and there are 2nd place finishes for Maestro & Bernie.

Realise that we are having to compete with the footy World Cup & the 27th June evening game is knock stage out so I can’t say what you’ll be missing. I’ve had a word with Mr Capello & he has arranged for the England team to play like a bunch of girls – so as not to distract you from GPL practice.

We will run two races on the same track. Two chassis are available, you must use one in each race. Use the same car twice earns you a disqualification in the second race.
Your choice of chariot for this occasion is the 1965 Mod ~ Brabham BT11 & the Ferrari.

The Spec Series is a full championship with standard points scoring. In addition the moderator will also tally up every drivers fastest race lap & compare the chassis head to head. For your time to count in the “Spec Challenge” you must complete more than 50% distance in both races. Resets are allowed so don’t retire because of a bad start.
Also the Spec Series in the only GPL championship to be decided exclusively by driver skill, no handicapping applies.

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page

Unlimited Shift-R is allowed in the race. No-fault Shift-Rs will not attract a Stop & Go penalty.  All other Shift-Rs must be followed by a Stop & Go.

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:50 pm UK Time = GMT).

Due to the number of races moderating will be light touch - reported incidents only, however the moderators reserve the right to review any incident with a particular emphasis on lap one. The aim is to review the race the following weekend so incident reports should be submitted within five days of the race (i.e. the following Friday).

The Championship is split into two sub-divisions, the Light Brigade & the Heavy Brigade. The driver allocation is set out below.

NOTE: In the event of more then 19 entrants a second grid for the Light Brigade will be run by Nicky. Please ensure you join the correct server, due to the way we import if you start the race on the wrong server your result will not count. If you can try to make sure you are in the chatroom by 8.50pm this will enable a decision without any delays to the start time.

Nice to know the practice I put in for this and another race was worth it... quite like this track, good flowing circuit, good choice of cars too. Really challenges the driver so it's not all in the chassis. The driver can make up a lot of time here in places you didn't think possible.

Just got home and downloaded the track but I couldn't join the server as the track wouldn't load  :'(

After spending over an hour trying to sort it I gave up on the idea of doing any form of racing and retired to the paddock bar to drown my sorrows  Sad Sad Sad .

Hard luck Bernie.  You missed a couple of cracking races.

I had a bit of hassle too.  I reinstalled the track using the updated (i.e standard) installer and it was fine.

A couple of fun races as usual - good to try different chassis. Think I might get serious if I could get near Steve and Norm  Wink But I can't, nor Phil either  Wink

Very good racing with Natan, Sam and Tim (Mutram), but I finally lost a race in the 2nd one where Sam took advantage of my off with 3 laps to go. Great track for racing and very clean fight with everyone, it was up to 3 wide sometimes, lol.

I took the Ferrari first but, right at the end of qually, my overheating wireless receiver conked out. For race 2, I stole the wife's fan to keep it cool, and it held out. Off to buy myself a long network cable today though.

I preferred the Brabham anyway, and managed to pip Norm to the Heavy pole which was pleasing. In the race I battled with Norm and Phil who seemed to have great straightline speed. They both got past but I kept them in sight and, with a couple of laps lefts, Norm spun at Piratella and I nipped past to get 2nd in class, not a bad effort.

Best thing from my POV was that I managed clean race, no spins or collisions, for the first time in UKGPL.

Those two race were excellent! Thanks chaps for the lovely clean racing. The first race involved race long battles with Tim, H and Nat, and the second race involved race long battles with Tim, H & Nat  Grin. Finished 3rd in the first race, after being passed by H and Tim in the final two laps but I managed to win the 2nd race, even if it was fortunate  Smiley. See you at the next one.

Awesome races - Thought I was even in with a chance at victory in race 1 when Hristo bogged down on the line and got swamped, Shame I fell victim to my own tires at the end of the lap just as I was about to break the tow back to the group  Roll Eyes
Nevermind, it was a great chase back upto the leaders although natan had me worried when he pulled into the pits at speed - I was half expecting him to appear at speed along side me at the end of the S/F straight!  Shocked

Race 2 went slightly better until about the 4th lap when I put 2 wheels on the grass and span while harrassing Hristo. Rejoined behind Sam and Natan who had been a short distance back and set about trying to catch them.
Hristo then had an accident/spin of his own and they caught him which helped me a little, then the following lap Natan span where I had and gave me 3rd back, leaving Sam and H in a battle of their own.
As I remember it Hristo then had a spin/wobble and dropped back to me. The rest of the race was spent just clinging onto him and hoping we could catch Sam in time..

Sam - In answer to why I'm a second and a half faster: I had a Hristo to draft for half the race  Wink ninja

Some good news at least Bernie.  I had exactly the same gobbly gook messages when I tried the original installer.  The updated installer worked fine.  I put it down to me running GPL on Vista (I suspect the original installer isn't compatible with Vista).

Results time (again thanks to the Statto machine)
On what was a very sad day for English football the turn out was a bit down (England supporters have an excuse & I suspect Nicky was laughing so hard he was in no fit state to race)
Those who did attend had a blast round Imola in the 65 Ferrari & the BT11. Overall victory went to the Brabham by an average (all drivers completing 50% race distance in both events) of 0.23 seconds.
In the drivers stakes Sam Blood becomes the first driver to beat Hristo, but H maintains a lead in the Light Brigade from FMG.
Also an upset in the Heavies with Steve Bird failing for the first time in 14 races to take a podium. Also a first win for Norm Hance.

Just to remind you there is no Spec Race on 11th July, as this clashes with a certain football match in South Africa.

Just want to point out that the Ferrari was about half a second faster than BT11 for me, when driving alone and without slipstream. It was mostly due to its engine power. You can see it in the Qualifying results.
