Personally I don't care about the number of races. I enjoy the practice at least as much, and taking this into account the costs are fairly trivial compared to my other hobbies (or more importantly my daughters' :'().
I'm with Paul here, I've pretty much stopped doing track days (well the odd one I do) but iRacing is pretty good, much more convenient I can drive when I want to and its far cheaper when you look at tyres/brakes etc not to mention that when I'm on a track day I'm not only spending money like water but I'm not earning any either.
Even with the costs of a decent hardward setup its pretty cheap as a hobby.
