Yes. There is a bit of a mixed bag of cars out there. This is club racing afterall so it is budget racing. The 968 in shot is in a class called 944 super cup which consists of 968's and 944 Turbos. The car is classed quite a bit higher than mine, but since this is amateur racing, cars from varying classes often mix it up on track. Further evidence of that are the Spec Miata's in the mix too. My car is classed quite a bit higher than theirs.
My car is an 1986 chassis with a stock turbo motor from 1988. It weighs 2650lbs with driver and fuel. I'm just a tick over 200lbs. The interior has been thoroughly torn out and replaced with a cage and other safety gear. Among the cars on track in my race group it was in the 3rd theoretical quickest class. It felt great to beat a number of drivers that were classed higher than me. I was running 1:03's on Saturday and 1:04's on Sunday. I couldn't dial out the understeer all weekend. 2.5 yr old tires didn't help my cause, but I still should have been able to get the car to work better.
Now if I can find a stock turbo I'll be able to do my 1st race at Watkins Glen in October.

I would expect an rx7 of that era to be pretty close to a 968 - less power certainly, but much lighter. What power do you get?

178 rwhp. One of the big differences is the 968 has a lot of tire. I'm running 225 where as the 968 is running 255.

A 968 isn't going to generate much more power than that at the rear wheels to be honest. They have more weight at the back, hence the need for bigger rears. What sort of rubber do they let you run?

I am aloud to run Hoosier R6's or BFG R1's or any DOT compound; no slicks. Most people run Hoosier R6's. I would too if I had the money. I was running Toyo R888's in the race. It is a treaded tire intended for the track. The quick drivers in the 968's were running high 1:00's to low 1:01's. The tire compound, age, chassis setup and of course, driver skill is what really makes the difference.
I didn't see dyno numbers of any of the 968's, but they did squirt away in the straight bits.

968s make 240 bhp tops at the flywheel normally and it is very hard to extract any more without serious engine mods. As Mark says, R888s are well used over here, although in the Porsche Club Championship they use Michelin Pilot Cup Sports iirc. Have you got a link to a website with results and regs at all?

Results here: http://www.mylaps.com/results/showrun.jsp?id=1639871MJ. I have both a Porsche and Mazda. The Porsche doesn't see wheel to wheel action as it most certainly would get banged up. I made light contact with a slower car in the race. I don't care if the Mazda gets banged up. I do care if the Porsche does.

Nice footage Mike, thanks for posting. Track looks very tight in places must be so difficult to pass.

Track looks very tight in places must be so difficult to pass. You should have seen the recent ALMs race around the rock.
