Round 3 of the Spec Race Championship & we are back in the 65 Mod with a trip to the seaside – Monaco to be exact.  One of F1’s real icon tracks with lots of low gear corners and a devilish chicane which can be taken flat out in the 65 cars.

The Championship table is shaping up led by FMG, King Hiro &  then Hristo. Full details here Spec Race Challenge

Spec races consist of two back to back Intermediate Short races on the same track. Each driver has to drive one car in each race - start whichever you like. Anyone daft enough to drive the same car will be disqualified from race two. This weeks choice of chariot is the Honda & BT7.

Spec Races is the only championship with no handicapping – it’s down to individual driver skill & the ability to cope with different cars.

Races will be run on one grid with one championship table for Season 20.

The Spec Series will be run according to normal UKGPL rules, although only reported incidents will be moderated. (Please file reports by the Friday after race night). Unlimited resets (Shift R) are allowed and you must take a Stop & Go penalty unless another driver or warp was clearly responsible for your misfortune. Stop & Go means coming to a complete halt in (or around) your pit box - please be careful on the rejoin not to impede other cars.  The intention is to be a little less serious than the other championships - have as much fun as you can within the rules.

Great video, Steve. Going through multiple related videos after that, I landed on this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5rpFXdWtK4

I suggest all Novices and whoever is struggling in Amateurs to watch it, listen it, then rewind and do the same. It applies 100% to GPL cars and 65s in particular. Paul, you reading?  Wink

Really good find Steve - I have to agree with the first comment below the vid. There's something incredibly cool about a frank breakfast discussion on race driving from Jackie at his peak  Cool

Yes that's the practice server password although, in reality, most practice sessions are open.
Provided you have registered for a division you will see the race password at the top of each race thread.
Also, for anyone Registering for a division from now on, it would be useful if you could put a post in the registration thread to say you have done so. It is not automatic - we have to manually enter you - and now the season has started it's not checked every day.

Nice races. Would have been a bit better off if I actually read the dates and time of the races.I just saw spec gt silverstone on top of the list and assumed that was sundays race so I spent sunday afternoon trying to squeeze the chaparal below 1.30..(wich I didn t).
Had a good start at race one and was at third until lap 2 when the faster Evil came up my side on start/finish straight and I let him enter t1 first. A bit later Sam cought me and was up my side before the last hairpin.Again I lift early to avoid possible contact during brakedown.Sam left room for me but I was allready behind.finished at 5 th.
Second race H and Tim had an incident but with their horrific speed they both managed to catch up and pass me. Second half of the race I had a nice battle with AA wich involved an error from my side that made him spin. He managed to turn it and go before me before anyone else came by. I think it was Steve behind us who then was on our tails. positions remained same until AA did an error big enough for me to squeeze through and I finished 5th again

I think maybe a lot of regulars were either distracted by some shiny new GT's or frightened by the great Moanco circuit??!! Either way there was a smaller than usual turnout for this event, which was a shame.

Race 1,  Hristo and Tim set a pace that I just could not live with and they romped away in their own private battle whilst after the first few laps and an opportunist pass on Tom out of the final hairpin, I was on my own and just cruised to a lonely 3rd place finish.

Race 2 and Sam had shown his pace in the Waza ( maybe a secret yearning to serve HER??) to get up to 3rd behind Hristo and Tim.

Tima and Hristo managed to collect each other at the top of the hill and allow ( although I still don't know how we did not get collected by their cars as well!!) Sam and myself through to 1st and 2nd.

Sam was driving well and I was hoping for a small mistake to allow me a chance. One attempt into the gasworks hairpin was deftly defended around the outside by Sam and he refused to give many openings. Then Hristo appeared in my mirrors at warp speed and I allowed him  a pass rather than fight him that early in the race. Sam then overcooked St Devote and I passed him but was still in 2nd because of Hristo  Undecided.  Then Hristo did a Stop and Go and I was able to pass to get a few seconds breathing space.
We were now over half distance and I was leading so Hristo was not going to get a "free pass" again even if he is a team mate   Wink

I concentrated on getting the apexes tight and the power down as soon as possible, it probably was still not that clinical, but it was just fast enough around this circuit to hold a faster car behind until the flag.......but it was ruddy hard work!!!

Always like Monaco as it dishes up some great races.  Grats to all finishers and hard luck to Sam who showed his true potential in a proper car  Grin

Great fun round the streets at Monaco. I was very impressed at the lack of mistakes by everyone at this event, except for myself of course  laugh. Still, it was just a relief to get a podium after a record run of barren results. The first race was interesting, again owing to a lack of practice I hastily downloaded Steve Cloyd's BT7 setup and my goodness it was a handful! Good fun mind because the nose would change direction at a remarkable rate. With a quick change to the brake bias and steering lock, I managed a rather average 1:30 which was good enough for 6th. The first half of the lap was really scary, however, due to everyone warping on my screen so heavens knows what I looked like on the server replay. After half a lap, my latency calmed down and from then on a steady connection followed. The race meanwhile was me catching and passing an impressive A Arglietelli (sorry can't remember how to spell the name!) and a rather generous Tom on the way to 4th; though I did clout the barriers on the last lap spinning me round almost giving the place back to Tom  angel.

The second race was much better, Tim suggested I turn down my detail bias for a smoother play rate and it seemed to do the trick, as everyone was fine and fluid from my screen, including the start  Smiley. Having never driven the Honda round Monaco, I wasn't sure what to expect. I found it heavier than the BT7 but thanks to the setup, the car was much easier to drive and somehow managed a 1:29, good enough for 3rd on the grid. The start went well and soon I found myself into first with Tim and H's coming together. Evil was nipping at my heels for a few laps but I stubbornly resisted  Grin, that was until I overcooked St Devote, losing places to both Evil and H. I caught up again after a few laps, but got over-excited and spun at Tabac, resigned to third for good. Finished about 5 seconds behind Evil and 3 behind H, just glad to have a relatively trouble free race  Smiley.

Congrats to H and Evil for the wins!

Grats to the winners first of all. This time I have seen you around me for a little while due to the circumstance in race 2, boy you are quick Shocked!

Fun races, although again very thin starting grid. I think this doesnt affect that much the 4 or 5 frontrunners, who are generally racing on their own, but it is a bit disappointing for the backmarkers like me who aspire to reach out and enter the 'best of the rest' category Cool ; these 2 races I could only really take on Steve (although probably not at his best, I suspect), so hope to see more people at Silverstone next time.

Race 1 I somehow managed to put it in fifth in practice, had a good start, but couldnt fend off Sam for long. After that a lengthy dicing with Steve, who was shadowing me for many laps until he made the slightest of the mistakes at the worst possible place, the exit on the straight before the tunnel. That gifted me a few secs of breathing space and an easy stroll to the flag.

Race 2, again fifth in qually, having  a proper car to drive compared to KH, who had to ride the mosquito this time around. Then the clash at lap one put me third. Now that was nice, till it lasted. Hristo caught me and flashed by in a few laps though, then it was Tim's time, with a slick move on the short straight after Casino'. After that again it was a matter of protecting position, this time from KH on the mosquito, and fighting the ever increasing loss of concentration. Between my brushing of the walls and the clash with KH, I think by lap 10 I had all four wheels and suspensions somehow not in the place they were at beginning Cheesy Cheesy. Finally managed to get it properly wrong at the awkward braking point before the last hairpin (I think..) and let KH by. Last but not least, clipped the straw barriers at the chicane at the last lap, had managed to avoid it for 29 laps in total, and I figured it would make a pretty decent Gran Finale. Mother and father of all the spins, other position lost to the arguably cheerfully grinning Steve.

As already said, fun races, would have been great to race Monaco AND the entire 20 cars field though!

A few tips from a great master!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgSiK_VarK8

I was there that year , Stewart was stood in front of me at the exit from Casino square during the FF practise , he was explaining to Polanski the quickest way through the corner and where the FF boys should be changing gear for the run down the hill , pointing out the good and the bad .

I should have listened more intently  Roll Eyes

Has anyone got the server replays from this event? Would be useful when preparing for the first round of the Pros.
