Moderator's Report

Dave Randall took his first win of the season in this eventful race. Fulvio did a impressive recovery race to snap second form Al at the last lap.

There were no incidents reported for this event but maybe it should have been.

There are two issues that need to be discussed.

First, an incident report is about bringing an incident to the moderator`s attention. The incident is then looked into and discussed among the mod team to see if any action need to be taken to futher improve the allready high standard of driving here at UKGPL. Sometime there are violations against the rules and penaltys will be handed out but that should not be the main reason to submit a incident report.

There will be a minor change in the race announcements thread.

”Moderating will be by reported incidents only, however the moderator reserve the right to review any incident with a particular emphasise on lap one.”

Will be changed to ”the moderator will review any incident on lap one,”

Then there is the matter of high risk driving.
Make sure that if you like to take big risks in your driving, please do that when you are alone on the track.
Absolute not at the beginning of the race when there are a lot of cars around you, and you are on race fuel and cold tires. Also keep in mind that you just before the start, in quali, was on warm tires with a low fuel car. It is a good idea to at the end of quali do some race fuel, cold tires tests. Only make sure you do not get in the way of anybody else of cause.

Look at the hole picture of the race. The race is rather long, 27 laps this time, if you by taking big risks manage to gain some positions at the start of the race how are you going to keep that position if the drivers you passed are faster than you? On the other hand the possibility of ruin someones race, maybe your own, is very high.

It has been said over and over but it need to be said again it seems: To finish first, first you have to finish.

I'm sorry Hristo that your race ended like this, but you will not provoke me to discuss it on forum. Wait for server replay and report incident.

I'm not provoking you and I'm not going to protest either. I know you didn't do anything intentionally, but I also know my car didn't snap on its own for no reason to spin into the wall on the left while I'm turning right. There was some warp contact involved, but I'm pretty certain you drifted a bit too much there on the inside otherwise it wouldn't have happened. It's your own replay that can show that best, but at least on mine you drift wide and hit me on the side.

Anyway, I couldn't hide my disappointment from losing the race like this. I also want to comment on how some people seem to take way too big risks on L1/T1. There were 2 situations that unfolded in front of me on the entry to T1 and after the apex which could've easily ended up in tears. Can't you be a bit more cautious, people? Do you really think that gaining a position by taking such risk is justified? What would you do later when the faster driver you passed with such risk is behind you, block him for 27 laps?

Hristo what you have seen at the front at T1 was Martin going sideways cause a too deep entry turn and me reacting  to that trying to keep the inside avoiding his possibly spin. I was very cautios at T1 Lap1 entry keeping inside line after have been roared up the straight by Dave and Martin. At the hairpin I passed Martin that had a stop after a little bump on Dave at the apex, but on the following main straight Martin was on my tail again and I entered too deep and gently drifted to the rail and was glued by it. Martin went even more deep and bumped me on the same rail. I followed the rail cause I knew that if I had tried to leave it I'd have been suddenly launched in the middle of the track, but when the rail ended my car was launched the same on the track cutting Martin course that had rebounded better on the rail, sorry Martin. After hitting Martin my car was pushed to the left grass over the tires involving Bart in the process that was stuck on a concrete tire, sorry Bart. To rejoin the track safely I got a BF for cutting the course and had to pit to serve the penalty.
I restarted from pit behind Phil that spun at Peralta the following lap, then it was the time of Natan that spun in front of Goran at the end of the esses and I passed by both.
After a couple of laps I was on the tail of Bernie and drafted him on the straight to pass him at T1. Now in third I had about 25 sec. gap to Al in second. I saw that I could gain about a sec. a lap so I settled for a steady and safe pace trying to not do any big error hoping for some Al's error  Grin
At last lap I was on the Al's tail and drafted him on the straight to pass him at T1.
It was a very hot pursuit trying to not lost concentration, but it paid off Smiley

Anyway, firstly I have to retract my partial statement to Paul that setups don't count. I had 40 mins to try the mod on this (not my favorite) track before the event and the only setup I had was for the Lotus 43. Try as I might I was stuck at 1.59. Just before the start Al H kindly gave me his setup and immediately in Qually I got a 1.53 which at least meant I might get some racing.

OK Send me that Lotus 43 setup NOW - I've only ever managed 2:05 Sad I really hate this track. Not as bad as Monaco though ho ho.

All things considered I'm happy to grab a podium here... despite the agony of losing 2nd place on the last lap to my dastardly nemesis Fulvio (again! censored). The postponed Efexx race meant carrying over the handicap chassis which didn't fill me with glee as I felt if anything Mexico increased the disadvantage. So I wasn't expecting too much from this outing - especially as I'd never really got to grips with the Lotus 43 before & was finding it quite hard to drive at the limit round this twisty venue.

Started 5th & held back a little from the front 4 during lap 1 as it all looked a bit fruity up there. Starting lap 2 both Fulvio & Martin caught the armco on the outside of T1 right ahead of me but as I turned in, Martin sprang out (was ejected?) from the barrier right into my path - I was fully committed to my line by then so had nowhere to go & we collided pretty hard. Not sure how I managed to survive that impact but I see that GPLRA reports some medium damage for me (so that'll make a good excuse for what happened later... Wink) A further incident occurred between Fulvio & Martin behind me & by the time everything settled down I found myself in a very solid 3rd. That became 2nd when Tom discoed (bad luck mate - I hate it when that happens) but by then Prib was reporting that a recovering Fulvio was about 25 seconds back with 19 laps to go. With Fulvio in the Brab I knew it would be close by the end so I was pushing as hard as I dared - the fact that we set the two fastest race laps is testament to our battle but the Lotus was such a handful that I knew it'd be a miracle if I held on. Sure enough as we started the last lap Fulvio finally appeared right in my tow & breezed past on the inside into T1. I wondered afterwards if I should have tried holding the inside line & forcing him out wide but looking at the replay I think he had enough to get by no matter where I stuck the car.

Anyway throughout all this Dave was doing a sterling job out front so congrats to him on a very good win. Fulvio's laptimes show that without all his delays he could well have won so WD to him too (I will wreak my revenge at a later date Grin). Also a special WD to Bernie - if your attic is anything like as cold as mine you deserve a prize just for getting to the end without freezing certain parts of your anatomy off.

Aha. I may have a partial answer to my own question. I can watch my replay through GEM-GPL, but not through GPL alone.

Mystified-Waza.

Fulvio is right, but there's an even easier way, try opening your gpl directory in Explorer, which should be C:\SIERRA\gpl, and doubleclick on gplc66.exe .

It sounds like your trying to open a 1966 mod replay with your 1967 standard installation. This won't work since there are more than seven cars in the 1966 mod. 1965 and 1969 mods will open no problem even if you see the wrong cars in action.

Tom.

I have a problem with GPL replay analiser , I can load and quality test a lap , go to the replay screen , replay works fine but when I hit the reports button I get a fault message which basically says "you have a fault and GPLRA needs to close"  Shocked

It's Ok with all other 65 & 67 mods races, just 66 mod afaik  Tongue

Have you tried the new version of GPLRA (version 7.9)? Might help - http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=6319

There are times when it pays, to remember the days of 'PG' (prior to GEM).  There was an era when many cars, would show up to a big meeting, without the use of a fancy transporter.  And so it was with Mexico, where some GEM transporters refused their cargo.  For us, the old fashioned way, was to click on the proper GPL exe, and select our weapon of choice, once inside. angel

I suspect the transporters drivers to have been corrupted, yesterday.  Perhaps they took a bribe to refuse certain cars, though it's dangerous to speculate, and I hope everyone managed to prevail.

I put in a decent practice lap, and decided not to hang about during the race, as per my previous outing.  This changed tactic, saw me jump from 6th, to 3rd at the 1st corner.  But this quickly unraveled a lap later, when I played follow the leader into the outside Armco.  In the space of 6 or 7 seconds, I managed to hit the Armco, Fulvio, Al, and Fulvio again!  Hmm . . . I'm beginning to think 1966 was a dangerous year!  Shocked

It was a relief to see Fulvio able to snuff out the flames, and he and Al able to continue on, with some success!  Being the junior member, my car had lost a couple of cylinders in the scuffle, and I switched to limp mode.  Was immediately black flagged for dropping oil, but could find nothing in the rulebook about this, so hope my additional limp laps are officially scored.  Did nothing naughty enough to stop that I'm aware of?  Retired to the pits, once lapped.

Some spirited driving by both Fulvio, and Bernie, to liven up the finish.  With sympathies to those early departed from the race, from which I'll include commiserations to myself!  Sad

Qualifying could have been a bit better as I know if put a perfect (for me) lap together I should be in the 1:50's.  To see Hristo put in such astonishing lap times never ceases to leave me in awe and I'm at a loss to know where another two seconds can possibly be.  Huh  However, was really comfortable with the car handling and looked forward to a reasonably competitive race.

Got away from the line well and was up to second for T1, tried to keep it as tidy as possible and was relieved to get through without anyone ploughing into me, bad luck to those not so fortunate.  I agree with Hristo about risks on 1st lap, although I don't expect any of us would do anything but keep it nailed when you sense a chance to pass on the straight before the first corner.  For some of us that's the only chance we get to pass you H!  Smiley

The next challenge would be the hairpin, when the inevitable 1st lap bunch up would occur, Tom seemed a bit slow mid corner and I had to hold back resulting in a bump from behind.  Thankfully, I escaped damage or being launched across the border and a lap later manage to take the lead into the final turn.

Head down and wary of those cursed white tyres I managed to pull a reasonable gap, as those behind seemed to be having various issues.  Noticed Al was holding the gap fairly constant which kept me on my toes and I pushed a bit harder when necessary to try to maintain the gap.  Feeling very tired from the week's stresses at work meant my mind was prone to wandering and I found it very hard to focus properly.  Four laps from the end the front wheel just clipped a tyre on the twisty section and then I was facing the wrong way.  Keep cool, there's still a reasonable lead..  Got going again but now I could see Al and Fulvio pushing hard as I exited the hairpin, but was pleased to bring it home without any more mistakes.

Looking forward to Thruxton, though where no doubt I will be brought down to earth with a bump and normal service is resumed!
