UKPGPL races seem to be coming thick and fast now – I have mastered the “thick” bit but still searching for “fast”.

The starting grid was a little on the thin side last time out at Monaco. Three theories here; (a) sudden outbreak of GT Mod mania (b) Monaco not everyone’s favourite circuit or (c) the spec race formula is losing popularity. So something to attract the crowds back – how about Silverstone in the 1967 Mod?

A quick peek at the championship table after three rounds shows the usual suspects FMG, Hristo, Evil Clive & King Hiro.  Full details here Spec Race Challenge

Spec races consist of two back to back Intermediate Short races on the same track. Each driver has to drive one car in each race - start whichever you like. Anyone daft enough to drive the same car will be disqualified from race two. This weeks choice of chariot is the Brabham and the Fezza.

Spec Races is the only championship with no handicapping – it’s down to individual driver skill & the ability to cope with different cars.

Races will be run on one grid with one championship table for Season 20.

The Spec Series will be run according to normal UKGPL rules, although only reported incidents will be moderated. (Please file reports by the Friday after race night). Unlimited resets (Shift R) are allowed and you must take a Stop & Go penalty unless another driver or warp was clearly responsible for your misfortune. Stop & Go means coming to a complete halt in (or around) your pit box - please be careful on the rejoin not to impede other cars.  The intention is to be a little less serious than the other championships - have as much fun as you can within the rules.

You might like Pic-du-Midi Hrisro - it's a drivers track.  There's a killer chicane, various corners, some scenic mountains and, umm . . . . everything!  There's also a Pic-du-Long with more of the same.Smiley

I like to throw in a couple of different tracks into the Spec Challenge calendar. This Season there’s a bit of a French theme with Pic di Midi & Riems. I’m sure they have both been used by GPLRacer and properly tested. We are using the 65 chassis on new tracks to make it a bit easier.
Martin describes Pic du Midi quite nicely. Lap times will be in the 1.30’s. There is a nice combination of straights & corners – although the chicane is wicked.
If anyone doesn’t like the track UKGPL will refund your admission price (terms & conditions apply - excludes any contributions to the server fund. Claimants must be aged 85 or over. Offer ends 22/11/2010).

A couple of lonely races but still enjoyable. One hairy moment in race 1 - Evil was alongside on the straight and I saw a puff of smoke in the distance - guessed it was a blown engine. Sure enough I was heading straight towards it knowing the wild Waza was on my right. Luckilly Clive had left enough room for me to get round, he still passed me though LOL.

First race was somewhat dissapointing although it was fair that evil at least got third. I should been able to do faster laps with the brab than I did .I was like 0.5 secs faster with that than the fez in practice in average. couldn t do anything with those up front so I took it easy. Then Evil shows up right behind me much closer than Vos I think who was 10-15 secs behind showing in 4 th behind me on the timeboard. I decide to try some hotlaps to hold him off but sudden change of pace made me clip a corner and spin .
Second race was a joy. tight field and my pace was faster than with the brab. couldn t do much with those ahead of me, but I had the chance at least first half of the race. Some spins up front granted me third. Comiserations(did I spell right now?) to Samb who held 1 st spot for long periods of the race.

LOL I might be a waza, but  we have a code of honour to adhere to ( sometimes  Roll Eyes )   I got a better drive on to Hangar straight and as I  pulled out of your slipstream I saw the roadblock ahead. I was not going to lift  Wink, but I did move ( slightly) more to my right to give you a chance.

I'm still not sure what happened at the start but I just never got the green button to "go to grid". So I waited in the hope that I might at least start from the pits...which fortunately it did. But that put me 20secs back with absolutely no hope of catching the leaders, but everything went red and I just banzai'd the whole race  and at least got Tim within sight by the flag.

Sorry for the confusion on prib as it did of course show me as a lap down on the field because I started from my pit box which was in front of the S/F line and so did not start counting down laps until I crossed the line at the end of my 1st lap.

Race 2 was in the "green thing" and it took me several laps to realise that I was dropping into 2nd when I should have stayed in 3rd on several corners, and my lap times improved.
I managed a last of the demon brakers move on Tom on lap 1 into Stowe and just kept things together on cold tyres, which enabled me to chase Tim and Hristo...well chase Tim and wave goodbye to Hristo!!
Tim was marginally faster in his Brab and I never really got into a position to challenge him. Hristo tried to spring a surprise by pretending to be a back marker, and as a result I managed to side swipe him into touch and gift the win to Tim. In my defence, Hristo was supposed to be 30 secs ahead your honour, and had no right to be where he was!!!

Another couple of erratic races from me. I couldn't join the first race thanks to a bandwidth mismatch, so a quick tweak in the core.ini followed and I was in business. My inexperience in the Brabham showed as I qualified slowly in 7th, made a lightning start, but lost it at the first corner thanks to my lead foot. After several other excursions I finished 6th, never really happy with the way the Brabham's understeer.

The second race was far more promising. I qualified 2nd after a better effort in the Ferrari and made a good start, getting along side H but he was far later on the brakes so I slotted in 2nd. A few laps followed and I had Tim and Evil nipping at my heels and once H completed his stop and go, I was in the lead! Tim kept on piling the pressure but Silverstone isn't the easiest track to pass on so I maintained 1st place for a few laps. That was until I lost the back end into Becketts. I drove a rather dispiritedly after that, making many errors crashing with H, and eventually finished 6th again.

Not my best effort, I just wish I could find a bit more time to practice. My driving this season has been shocking to say the least.

Somehow had the idea this was a 65 mod race , arrived in chat to find it was a 67 race.

With no set up for either fez or brabby I joined and tweeked the default brabby set up into something more driveable .
The usual back of grid quallifying slot followed by a bit of psuedo racing , soon got bored with spinning off and crashing out.

Couldnt stand the freezing cold conditions in my loft for part 2 took an early bath . Weather for next few days is set to be colder so may decide not to race for a while , feeling it in me bones a bit to much these days  Sad

Unfortunately the IGOR race list died about 8.30. I looked in the Moderating rule book - It said "Billy - you are buggered - better hope Vos turns up". Good thing he did & sorted things out. Most people managed to join the server direct via the IP address. Missed race 1 on account of a server bandwidth issue. Got on track for Race 2 & spend 12 laps chasing Franceso's tail pipes - but instead of cracking he just kept lapping faster.

Results & replays now posted.

Franceso - its Reims - the 1967 version. If you go to the Series Registration thread https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=8352.0
there is a link to download the track.
