FUN RACE – Sir Jack Invitational
Osterreichring at Zeltweg 1971

Just in case you’re bored of a Tuesday night & need something to work off the mince pies you shouldn’t have scoffed for Christmas here’s a bit of GPL exercise. Also something a little bit different – a Black Night Racing promotion in honor of Sir Jack Brabham’s fine machinery – the race will be restricted to Brabham chassis only. Those drivers who regularly race in the Amateurs or Graduates Works Division get the BT7 & those drivers who in the Novices / Grads Privateers get the BT11. (I would ask that we are very careful into T1 – it is approached off a long uphill straight. My guess is the faster drivers will out-quallify the slower drivers but the slower guys will have the edge on the approach to Turn 1).

I’m guessing most people will be familiar with this track – if not it is the 1971 version.

Really pleased to qually third and surprised it wasn't a gaggle of BT7's with the 11's trailing behind. Must be something in those chassis allocations  Wink

Here we go then and wham bham and oh dear. Didn't fancy a 20 lap solo effort trailing at the back so it felt like time to leave. Shame as might of been a good race.

A fun event so not one for blame but I did wonder if it was all my fault so had a look. Anyway looks like a case of exuberance and grunt over experience on my part. After a good start I threw my lot in with Art and followed him past H up the hill. He went off an I went rather too wide for my liking as Hristo went to resume his lead position. Not sure if H span trying to avoid AA but it was all over after that.
So I'm not exactly saying it was my fault LOL, and wanted to take the opportunity that was there, but I'm sorry it ended in tears at the first corner.

Anyway well done to whoever has won.

Doing good and enjoying the racing until around 10 to go when my puter decided to go slow , real wierd got screen freeze and was about to quit when the thing came back to life again Shocked  Thought that now it was OK but the same thing happened again soon after , would freeze for 5 secs then OK for 5 secs freeze then OK , freeze OK  Embarrassed

Wierd  Undecided

Decided to quit rather than wait for some one to come along and find me suddenly stopped in front of 'em .

It was my fault for T1 mayhem, I followed the wide line of AA because the car surprised me on cold tires and race fuel, and then I lost it over the gravel and spun. Sorry for those who got involved.

Somehow the BT7 remained intact and I continued after getting hit 2 or 3 times while spinning around. I thought AA was probably out of reach by then because he had great speed in Qualifying, but for the moment I had to focus on the cars in front of me.

There was some good racing in the next few laps and some people were really going for it, so it took more than I thought to pass them. BT11 cars were hard to pass, even with slipstream, and it was only my earlier acceleration in the two left handers which gave me a definite edge.

I caught up Ronnie in a couple of laps out of the 2nd left hander up the hill, and then went for the inside going into the last corner, but he choose to go right in the braking zone when I was already commited for a pass. Tried to go even more to the inside, but Ronnie took himself out and I somehow kept control of the car while going over the bumpy kerbs on the inside.

Much to my surprise it wasn't AA in the lead, and I had a few laps of battle with Fabio which were tough, but entertaining. It was really difficult to shake off Fabio's BT11 once he slotted behind me, because of the slipstream.

Once that happened I could build a gap, but it seems it was also thanks to some mistake on Fabio's end, because the gap grew up all of a sudden. The remaining laps were spent trying to produce a better lap time, but it wasn't until the very last lap when that happened.

Grats to all finishers and see you in the championship races soon!

Yesterday was Tuesday!!  doh!  ruddy Bank Holidays have screwed my body clock. I actually joined in a practice race on the server earlier in the evening and still it did not click that the race was last night.  Undecided

Grats to H and all of you who were smart enough to turn up.

Big thank you to Billy for the choice of track and cars which made for some great racing in particular with Tom and Bob. That pass H, I turned right where I normally do to make the right turn and you shot down the inside with an excellent overtake. You made the corner and I did'nt and thats racing, fair play to you. Congratulations to the podium boys Hristo, Atillio and Bob. Oh and big commiserations to Fabio who I assume had run out of fuel/luck or both as I just beat him to the line.

I was glued on your back since the exit off the previous corner, Ronnie, then I moved right to give obvious intentions that I'm going to attack. I was totally in your blind spot just before the braking zone, yet you say you turned right where you normally turn into the corner. What do you expect me to do, disappear by some magic spell? If you just held the outside line we would've made the corner without any problem and then I'm 99% sure you would've passed me back up to either T1, T2 or T3, because of BT11' superior power and the aid of the slipstream from my car.  Wink

Anyway, thanks and hope you stay in the fight for longer next time.

This event was great fun, thanks to Billy for setting it all up. Zeltweg is a good track for racing and I already had a BT11 setup so I could just roll up and drive.

Last time here i quallied in the 43s, but that was with my old PC. I can now get a consistent 36fps here which allowed me into the high 41s this time around. After the carnage of lap 1 I was stone last but it was fun recovering through to 7th by the end. My CH team-mate Bartosz worked miracles in the BT7 and I was relieved to see the flag as he'd been filling my mirrors for half the race. I found the fps dropped a bit in the race so will have to remember that next time. Anyone else have any issues like that?

Anyway well done to the podium boys, a good start to GPL in 2011!

41s?? So we need to find some 10 seconds to catch up to you...  Roll Eyes Grin

As for fps, yeah, T1 was always dropping mine on each lap which made it a bit tricky to judge the grip level. It certainly contributed for the L1 carnage. I guess it's something to do with the track, just like with Monza 10k, and it requires a much faster PC than mine to not have any fps drop.

Oops...guess I meant 51s!! If only...

My new PC is pretty powerful so I was expecting to never have fps issues again, but I will be turning off some of the graphics next time I race here. Well done on recovering to the win H after the mess at T1.

Thanks and you were probably doing 43s in 67 cars.  Wink

The format of putting the Ams in the slower chassis seemed to work quite well & I was slightly surprised at the mix of positions on the starting grid. Probably run another one of these during the next break.

Zeltweg is a really nice track – a couple of places you can sit back with your foot flat down & just admire the scenery / graphics.

I ran into a sideways BT7 in the Turn 1 carnage, Hristo I think.  Less excuse on Lap 2 when I spied another BT7 up against the Armco in turn 4). By the time I worked out it wasn’t moving I’d missed my brake point and collided with Fulvio (sorry – & nothing to do with you leaving the server with a different rasteriser!).

After that I spent a couple of laps chasing Badblood who was harder to pass than I expected. After some synchronised spinning he was kind enough to let me through on the next lap. Well done Paul – getting better

Further to my sreen ,stutter, freeze, whatever you call it, I was worried cos nothing like this ever happened before , (although I did have lots of trouble a while ago when I used AVG anti virus) (since removed) .

So I d/l Ad-Aware , did a scan of my PC and was suprised at the stuff it found .

Hope I'm now clean and virus free , I have not been using any AV programme on this computer,  just been careful what I D/L and I never open unknown files , but the worrying thing , some of the "high level" threats where found amongst gpl stuff  Shocked
