Moderator's Report

Kyalami showed us 3 kinds of people. Those who understand binary and those that don't.

Oh, and those that can find the pit entry and those that can't. I've watched the entire replay several times and I'm sure the Pit entry does not move, yet lots of people failed to find it when necessary.

The battle up front was intense with the top 2 separated by a few seconds for the entire race, and there were some great performances from the mid field pack.

Now then, who had the pit wall as instructed and who didn't?

Server replay time: 0h00m54s

Nigel Smith drives through the end of the pit wall.

All drivers were told to have the pit wall in place or face disqualification. Though Nigel did not specifically gain an advantage by driving through the wall at that time, had it been in place he would have hit it and caused potential carnage behind.

I have chosen to issue a warning only in this instance, but next time I post a Kyalami race post it will be much more clear that any driver crossing the pit wall will be instantly disqualified.

Server replay time: 0h01m00s

Karliss is lucky not to collect Nigel when he outbrakes himself into T1

Server replay time: 0h07m30s

Al takes a SHIFTR presumably to repair damage from his earlier crash but does not take a SnG.

Server replay time: 0h08m20s

Karliss attempts to enter the pit lane but loses control and slides across track collecting a helpless RogUK and Pete Maestro who miraculously lands in the pit lane and inspects the damage.

Server replay time: 0h10m10s

Karliss attempts a second shot at the pit lane and gets collected by Blito who doesn't realise he is pitting.

The pit entry is tricky here and though Blito could not know Karliss was about to pit, it is always risky to close on somebody so quickly at that point.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h11m45s

RogUK is trying to pit following his SHIFTR but his SHIFTR was actually a free one.
He messes up his entry and has to reset so he now does owe a SnG which he takes at 0h13m30s.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h12m00s

Well, they say 3rd time lucky.
Unfortunately Karliss has never heard the saying and his 3rd attempt at pitting goes no better than his previous 2.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h12m50s

Ronnie passes Norm on the inside at Jukskei Sweep and the 2 collide.

Norm has lost the corner and Ronnie has enough overlap at turn in.

Norm takes too tight a line and although they are near the centre line when they touch, Norm is turning into Ronnie and should have allow him more room.

Server replay time: 0h13m05s

Karliss approaches a prostate NHance and Ronnie.
He is shown yellow flags and does slow down but clips Ronnie.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h14m20s

Ronnie attempts to pit following his crash with Norm and rips the front wheel off in the process.

His reset was free but now he does owe one and takes it immediately.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h15m50s

Karliss takes a 3rd SnG but this is for the incident where he was rear ended by Blito and should have been a free SHIFTR.

Server replay time: 0h29m25s

Ronnie attempts to pass Paul just as Paul has a huge tank slapper and the two collide.

  • Racing incident

but arent you supposed to be shown blue flags that only the lapped guy can see? I think it works like that with the AI.
Yes but sometimes I think GPL forgets to do that, at least from some of the past race reports I've read. Prib can tell you, if you have it, but sometimes that plays odd tricks so I never rely on it.
Before anyone starts saying 'don't use Prib' Wink I know and completely appreciate the non-Prib camps point of view, I just choose to as I like some things about it.

In the end it's awareness of who you're racing with directly (ahead and behind), how far they are (were) on the previous lap (pitboard/pribluda) and then listening carefully for car engines and looking at your mirrors, to distinguish the cars, and to judge their speed. Blue flags or Pribluda should only be used to fill in the gaps.

I know it's difficult when you're occupied with driving, but what helps is to establish a few points around the track at which you'll do those checks consistently and focus purely on your driving the rest of the lap. Good spots for doing checks are most corner exits which lead to longer straights, just after the car has been balanced after taking the corner.

I'm a prib fan. Without it most people have no idea who is behind them and in what position. Am I biased in my opinion? Probably, its lack of use by another driver on Saturday most likely cost me the win at Kyalami. But I believe in freedom of choice and agree with Hristo that if you listen and look and pay more attention to who you are racing with then you should not need to rely on it. How do you get the damn thing to work with v2 rasterisers in Direct3D anyway?

There are two main problems with Pribluda (which I've already spoken of in the past):

1) It doesn't always show you the correct driver ahead/behind of you, and it doesn't always show you the correct distance/time gap to them. It probably has to do with it skipping data during each update step, due to any momentary connection issues, but it's a real problem and I've had it happen many times back when I was using Pribluda, and I know it's been happening to everyone else.

2) It's very distracting! Taking your eyes and focus off the road to read all that info can lead to a lot of trouble. We've had multiple examples of that as well.

There is a thread here with the answer Ronnie because I wrote it.

I have the patches you need at home. Took me a while and a disco from Zandvoort to sort it.

Yes you do get shown Blue flags (most of the time), but sometimes they are difficult to see and, as H has already pointed out, when you are busy trying to keep the car on teh road it can be difficult to notice them.

I use Prib, and have points on the track where I know it's safe to look at it, I work out my points during pratice. If I'm in a battle and I know there is no one going to come up behind me I tend to just focus on driving, but if I'm lonely I will always keep an eye on Prib.

No problem getting out of your way AA, and Russ, I really don't want to mess with a battle for the lead, I saw that you two were close so I thought it was best to completely get out of the way.

Just a few observations as there have been some lengthy posts already.
Weird graphic glitches included Fabio's Ferrari/Honda hybrid and Ross's white BT7, but all tyres were
black- very strange night.
Qually for me was just a matter of getting a lap in at all what with the server problems and 7th for me was a definite improvement on my recent qualification performancces.
Steady Eddie on lap 1, and see what happens. What happened was I got around to the straight and found I'd cocked up 5th and 6th gears somehow- almost bogged going from 4th to 5th, and 6th was no higher! The good news was a very controllable setup and I'd remembered to put full fuel in for once:)
The race itself was a combination of luck [gained a few positions when those ahead decided to love it up] and steady pressure on Vos for a few laps, who finally caved climbing the hill before the line. Did you miss a gear? I went around the outside of you as I didn't want to stray over the pit wall I hadn't got.
Last part of the race involved trying to get closer to Fabio's multicoloured Fezza, but there just wasn't time .
4th will do methinks- for now!
PS Thanks for the compliment Ross.
PPS And thanks for all the help, guidance of everyone and the sheer fun that is UKGPL

Yes well done Nigel, the only problem being that you've admitted having no pit wall in place which DQs you as per the race announcement.

Shame really. Still, at least I would pick up another place..............................

Any latitude on this Mike? If no advantage is gained no damage was done. Nigel didn't stop and didn't go through the wall. The announcement is ambiguous as I alluded to but I, for one, wouldn't like to gain a place because somebody misread an announcement. I don't think (with all respect, Nige) the points will have an effect on the outcome of the championship. Perhaps a vote amongst the drivers? We ARE novices after all Smiley

If he never cut across the line where the pit wall is, why should he be DQ? I definitely remember people using the no pit-wall patch before and simply stayed within the boundaries during the race, never getting disqualified for that.

Ok I appreciate that I didn't read the race notice closely enough. I tried the instructions for replacing the wall but, probably due to my own computer 'numptniness' the whole track disappeared. On the re-install the pit wall still wasn't there.
So I blithely wandered on remembering PREVIOUS race announcements that  qualified the subject with an 'if any infringement onto the pitwall area' is noticed etc etc .
Both my hands are up [they're no use anywhere else] and I will stand by any decision by the modds. My neck is offered, in the very best tradition.

what should be a competitive time for anderstop?
id did test race with Ai, but seems on that track all virtual drivers are slow and after 2 laps going mad... crashing in T1 one behind other

I  have always understood that it is "at the drivers discretion" whether or not to have the pitwall in place.

However, if the driver is seen to pass through the pitwall regardless of any advantage gained, or not, he will be disqualified.

Therefore the rule allows you to have Kyalami WITHOUT a pit wall, but the onus is upon you to keep well clear of that area or risk a DQ.

Even if you have the pitwall on show, it is suicidal to drive along that side of the track anyway as it narrows and will cause you grief for sure.

Nigel,

I have a Kyalami post, with a link part way down, which connects to an Armco barrier, which you can modify to damage 65 cars. angel
