Moderator's Report

Kyalami showed us 3 kinds of people. Those who understand binary and those that don't.

Oh, and those that can find the pit entry and those that can't. I've watched the entire replay several times and I'm sure the Pit entry does not move, yet lots of people failed to find it when necessary.

The battle up front was intense with the top 2 separated by a few seconds for the entire race, and there were some great performances from the mid field pack.

Now then, who had the pit wall as instructed and who didn't?

Server replay time: 0h00m54s

Nigel Smith drives through the end of the pit wall.

All drivers were told to have the pit wall in place or face disqualification. Though Nigel did not specifically gain an advantage by driving through the wall at that time, had it been in place he would have hit it and caused potential carnage behind.

I have chosen to issue a warning only in this instance, but next time I post a Kyalami race post it will be much more clear that any driver crossing the pit wall will be instantly disqualified.

Server replay time: 0h01m00s

Karliss is lucky not to collect Nigel when he outbrakes himself into T1

Server replay time: 0h07m30s

Al takes a SHIFTR presumably to repair damage from his earlier crash but does not take a SnG.

Server replay time: 0h08m20s

Karliss attempts to enter the pit lane but loses control and slides across track collecting a helpless RogUK and Pete Maestro who miraculously lands in the pit lane and inspects the damage.

Server replay time: 0h10m10s

Karliss attempts a second shot at the pit lane and gets collected by Blito who doesn't realise he is pitting.

The pit entry is tricky here and though Blito could not know Karliss was about to pit, it is always risky to close on somebody so quickly at that point.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h11m45s

RogUK is trying to pit following his SHIFTR but his SHIFTR was actually a free one.
He messes up his entry and has to reset so he now does owe a SnG which he takes at 0h13m30s.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h12m00s

Well, they say 3rd time lucky.
Unfortunately Karliss has never heard the saying and his 3rd attempt at pitting goes no better than his previous 2.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h12m50s

Ronnie passes Norm on the inside at Jukskei Sweep and the 2 collide.

Norm has lost the corner and Ronnie has enough overlap at turn in.

Norm takes too tight a line and although they are near the centre line when they touch, Norm is turning into Ronnie and should have allow him more room.

Server replay time: 0h13m05s

Karliss approaches a prostate NHance and Ronnie.
He is shown yellow flags and does slow down but clips Ronnie.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h14m20s

Ronnie attempts to pit following his crash with Norm and rips the front wheel off in the process.

His reset was free but now he does owe one and takes it immediately.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h15m50s

Karliss takes a 3rd SnG but this is for the incident where he was rear ended by Blito and should have been a free SHIFTR.

Server replay time: 0h29m25s

Ronnie attempts to pass Paul just as Paul has a huge tank slapper and the two collide.

  • Racing incident

UKGPL Season 20 Novices Trophy (1965 Mod) Race 7 January 25th

The second race of 2011 and the Novices join the AMateurs on the flight to catch some winter sun in South Africa, at Kyalami. First built in 1961 and first raced by F1 in 1966 following a major upgrade.

This is quite a track of 2 halves with the long straight offering some great slipstreaming opportunities which could end in disaster entering the long and slippery T1 at Crowthorne, especially on lap one. There is a large run off area but most drivers that use it do do not manage to find a quicker line than those who stay on the tarmac.

*** NOTE***
Ensure that you have the pit wall in place. Those without the pit wall will be disqualified.

The standard Papyrus track has a pit wall but there are patches available that remove it. The absence of a pit wall will not stop you from joining the race but anybody seen by the moderators miraculously driving through the pit wall on the server replay will be disqualified.

Follow these instructions to restore the wall if you have a mod that has removed it:
METHOD 1:
To place a wall between the pits and the track, rename or remove the kyalami.trk and kyalami.3do files from your kyalami folder.
METHOD 2:
To reinstall the original Papyrus Armco, rename or remove the Armco_s.mip file from your kyalami folder.

Please see the Novices registration thread for an explanation of the chassis allocations shown below:

This is good - not sure how useful it is 'cos there is NO WAY I am braking that late! In practice I have taken three second off my best to get to 1:27.4 - so by the end of Qually I should be holding the record...

...or perhaps not. Smiley

Hey, considering your previous lap time differences, 27.4 is great! You're getting there, just a few more seconds to go!

I knew this race was going to be tougher than Sundays, as the Lotus was missing, and my advantage was gone.  But it proved even tougher than I'd thought. Undecided

As I lingered in the chatroom, the field had already assembled for practice, and GEM wouldn't let me join, latency too high, even though my core.ini has the right numbers dialed in.  So, signal strength checked, then restarted the air cooled, stripped down, ultra-light desktop system, and finally gained access. Chucked out before I could get a lap on the board!  Bars had gone sky high! . . . could've used a drink. Grumble.

Reentered, with only enough time to 'run what I brung'.  This meant starting near the back, where the bars immediately started their counted down on, "Time Gentleman, please."  Which meant by the time the flag was dropped, so was I!  So I'm not waiting any longer for that drink, lousy Server!!      2guns

server was troublesome during practise but fine in the race...
pleased I hung around for it for i had a fantastic race! I made my first clean on-track pass in at least 7 years!!!
Had a great battle for the whole 2nd half of the race with "peter maestro" that saw passes and re-passes and was only resolved my knackered tyres refused to grip at the chicane on the final lap!! awesome stuff!

MASSIVE FUN.

Qually was tough as we kept getting chucked off when I was putting in my fastest lap but I got a 1:28 odd which was Ok - bit disappointing but I wasn't last again - hooray.

Got a good start and gained a few places but overcooked it at the Jusskei sweep and lost them again - went on a mission to hunt down Blito and Alistair and could keep up but not gain - which was lucky 'cos it gave mee a chance to avoid the carnage when Alistair parked his Fezza on the main straight sideways... Al caught me up again soon after and I outbraked myself at Crowthorne which put him under my rear wheels - just held the corner and drifted wide - couldn't see him and thought I just had a lead - I didn't he was beside me and I collected him at T2 Sad He was ok, I span. Sad Might get some penalties for that one but it is my first actual go at racing so I am not too experienced at this. When it happened I thought Al had tapped me from behind and it might have been his fault. Not so.

Concentrated on being as smooth as I could and put in some sub 1:30's which for me is fine. Made another mistake at the esses? and nearly collected the race leader who did brilliantly for me. I was so busy spinning I wasn't even sure I was facing the right way and I thought I could accelerate away cleanly. AA got a faceful of Armco but I think he was OK, let him past on the straight. Penalties? Hope not. Ronnie had obviously had a problem because I was suddenly racing him - he passed me beautifully (I had time to admire it) into T2 on the lap but I kept pace with him and got a clean pass at Crowthorne - my first ever - I don't think he fought me to hard! We had a good scrap for a couple of laps and when I got the last turn wrong (again) Ronnie backed off and left me room. Got the last turn wrong again but this time went wide on the grass - had to reverse and start again - to my surprise Ronnie was only a little ahead going slowly going up the hill - did he have a problem? I thought so and chased him hard down the straight. He held me off fairly easily and stretched away. We were then passed and Ronnie made a small mistake which allowed me to catch up. This time I did have the legs at Crowthorne but I overcooked it at T2 overcorrected and crossed the track into him - nothing I could do as I was a passenger but I am really sorry about it.

On looking at the replay - Ronnie didn't have a problem - he slowed so we could race - I really appreciate that and I want to pay tribute to him. I also paid him back by punting him off the track and nicking his place (the shame). After that it was just a case of bringing it home and with Karliss behind shown as +1L I relaxed - oops on the last bend he was 68 yds behind and I was going slowly - could I hold him off for a lap - CONCENTRATE. But to my vast relief I had the lap count wrong and saw the chequered flag.

My best race by far. Sorry to anyone I held up, particularly AA.

Sorry also for the massive missive but I AM BUZZING.

The standard Papyrus track has a pit wall but there are patches available that remove it. The absence of a pit wall will not stop you from joining the race but anybody seen by the moderators miraculously driving through the pit wall on the server replay will be disqualified.

To be clear for the future - is the pit wall required to avoid DQ (I had it) or is the DQ if you drive through it.

Worst race ever for me,lost it at crowthorne after about 3 laps braked to late, then chasing Karliss rearended him on the pit straight (sorry Karliss) next lap went to pit and missed the entrance lol next lap to pit crashed into pit wall, time to leave, grats to podium.

I am not sure why we have the pit wall rule - it makes the pit entrance bloody tricky Sad As long as it is the same for everyone, it should be OK and most do not have the wall by default, I think.

Can’t be too disappointed as I forgot all about this race and only started practice at 18:00. Luckily I have raced here a few times before and watching H’s race guide helped me remember the track quite quickly. I got to a pace that I thought was OK to race, in the pre race practice races I was going quite well, so I was looking forward to the race starting.

When it did start I was settling into my Qualifying rhythm, then the server kicked me out. I believe it was the same for everyone, but at first I thought it was just me, so I kicked the kids off the internet Smiley Once back to a stable server I lost my rhythm (I’ve got the race driver excuses sorted, just the speed to go) and was well over a second off my pre race pace. Was OK, and looking at the other times I was happy enough were I was.

At the start I took the first lap or two steady, and was straight into a fight with Pete M, I got a really good run on Pete on the finish straight, I when the wrong way (hindsight is great) and went to the right, which was running out of tarmac very quickly. I checked my mirrors and I thought I was fully past Pete so moved back onto line, needless to say I wasn’t 100% past him and the back of my wheel hit his front. Sorry about that Pete and I hope it didn’t ruin your race too much. After that my car was running but very slowly, so I took a Shift & R.

I got back too it and caught Pete M again, I nipped past him as he was very slow into the first corner. We had a small battle for a while until I made a small mistake coming out of turn 2, Pete got a run on me and got past me into the fast turn 3, and unfortunately he didn’t leave me any room and punted me off. After a spin my car was OK so I got back to it.

Badblood has got past me during these off’s, I caught him up and was looking for a way past, he made a small mistake and went wide going into turn 2. The space looked good so I went for it. I kept a tight line, as I knew he was likely to make the corner so I left him space. He came back on line, as he obviously didn’t think I was next to him, the collision didn’t effect me but I saw him spin out, sorry about that if it was my fault.

After that I was pretty lonely, I reeled the remaining laps off without too much incident. I was still slow, the whole race I was at least 1 second off my best times in the pre race practices. I can’t be too disappointed as I thought this race was next week so had about 2 hours practice. Will be back stronger for the next race.
