Today's migration dry run went well so I'm going to pencil in this coming Friday for the actual migration of the site as it gives me Saturday the 12th as a day's contingency with no races scheduled, although I'm expecting everything to be complete by Friday afternoon. It'll take 4 hours for the DNS updates to propagate so that's the absolute minimum time for everyone to be back up and running.

That means I'll be setting the current HostICan site into maintenance mode early on Friday morning, after which you won't be able to access the forums, SRou home page or UKGPL home page (or any other part of the site, although the replay archive may be available for some of this time as it's already been migrated) at all until the migration is complete; if things go badly and I have to revert to HostICan it may take up to 4 hours for the DNS to switch back again. Let's hope that doesn't happen!

Hope it goes well. Just a minor point i started reading it and thought 'this coming friday', would be the 11th!

Good spot - I must've been staring at the screen for way too long this morning. Embarrassed It is meant to be the 11th with the 12th as contingency. I don't want to leave it too long as the risk that we have to change something that then breaks the migration increases the longer after the dry run I leave it.

Since you are planning a migration it makes sense to change the TTL's to minutes instead of hours. Do you have access to the TTL numbers?

I do but I don't want to go nuts with the DNS or the hosts will probably object. It'll take me most of he morning to move the data and files across again in any case.

If you guys want to communicate during this, you are welcome to join my forum and use it. I could even make a section there if you like, a kinda' "Emergency SROU". Heehee.

Just a little reminder that they'll be some (or possibly a lot of!) disruption tomorrow morning when I migrate the site.

Looks like it's all up and running again. Smiley

In the process I've discovered that F*rd's HTTP proxies don't respect the TTL set on DNS records. Roll Eyes Good job I'm more cunning than they are...

Now we cross our fingers and hope everything's okay...
