Congratulations Evil on a fine win! Just too bad this one isn't for the record books as I beat Hristo's lap record for once, albeit in Evils slipstream Cheesy .

The Fez was hard to control when I last drove it at Christmas in a practice for the Rouen fun race, especially when releasing the brakes, and it was no different at Castle Combe today. I decided to shift the brake bias forward from the 50 % that my setup was originally equipped with to 54 % and hoped for the best.

In the race I was lucky not to be taken out at T1 so I could continue my chase behind Tim and Evil. Tim ran wide and spun later on in the lap after which I continued chasing Evil. I didn't want to risk everything so decided to slot in behind him and tried to pressurise him into making a mistake. Evil got really sideways at times but always managed to keep it on the island somehow and keep his position. A few backmarkers made his life even harder, but he still wasn't giving way. After I had a momentary lapse of concentration I lost a second and realised I had to floor it to have any chance of winning, because there were only a few laps left and Evil was still going at it. After one lap in quali mode and one lap to recuperate from that and try to pressurise him into making a mistake, I finally decided to have a real go entering T1 in the last lap. Unfortunately we banged wheels and after that my right rear wheel decided to go into retirement one lap early. I was left with my car and three remaining wheels in the armco. Thankfully Evil could continue and took a well deserved win!

My best chance in this race, was to overtake a faster Ferrari or two early on, and try to stay ahead.

I'd just about squeezed past Fulvio on lap 1, when I came apon an unforeseen, bad sign of trouble.  It's always a bad sign, when a wheel is ripped off, even if it was a good sign beforehand!  My wounded BRM instinctively attacked the most convenient Ferrari, and poor Natan went for an unforeseen hay ride. Roll Eyes

I stayed at the track, to watch 2 of Ukgpl's finest, battle it out for the win, and plan next, to watch more carefully for signs of trouble. :'(

Thanks to Paul for a great fun event.

I guessed that it was going to be a close fight at the front even before the qually times showed HOW close!! Tim pipped me for pole when all I needed was someone to give me about 0.3secs with a tow to get back to the front....but no-one volunteered!!

The start at Castle Coombe is always risky as the wide track sort of encourages drivers to go for a pass on the approach to Avon Rise, which unfortunately really has only 1 racing line through it on the approach to Quarry..as someone found out last night.

Tim had taken the lead from pole and was as quick as I had expected with Tom watching us from behind. I found it easy to close on Tim with the help of the slipstream in the first couple of laps and started to press for an opening, fully expecting to have to work hard for a great many laps to get past. But then Tim went a bit too far sideways at Old Paddock, slid a wheel onto the grass and I grabbed the chance and nailed it down towards Tower.
That was when the hard work began!!  Just 2 laps into the race and I was in the lead, but I had Tom on my tail and he was quick. Undecided

the rest of the race was as maximum attack trying to keep things as clean as I could and not too much sideways action ( a whole new concept for me  Grin)
The slipstream balanced out the slight power advantage that the BRM had and Tom was clearly looking for a way through. He was definitely quicker through Tower and Camp but I had the advantage through Quarry and Old Paddock. When I say advantage we are talking maybe a tenth of a second either way!!
For 27 laps we were glued together and I knew that just one small mistake would give Tom the race win. He got alongside once exiting Tower but the extra grunt of the BRM just saved me.

The backmarkers made life really stressful, not in any way their fault and I have no complaints, but when you are racing at 100% against someone as good as Tom the last thing you want to do is back off and lose momentum. Easing off to avoid catching the backmarker at the next corner is not really an option either Shocked.
As a result I passed Bernie on the grass exiting Old paddock and I think it was FragFritz that I passed in the braking zone for Camp with the whole car twitching left and right but I just held on.

Last lap and Tom got a run out of Camp and was slipstreaming me up towards Quarry. I tried to leave enough room over Avon Rise but at those speeds there is not much room for error and we touched...(sorry I Tom have not looked at the replay so not sure exactly who was at fault ) I escaped unscathed but Tom lost a wheel and was out of the race.  Undecided
A shame to end a thrilling race that way but it was very intense for almost 30 laps.

Grats to all finishers and to the Rockers for a points victory, and to the Mods for a moral victory with one car less!!

Someone suggested in chat to be careful at T1 lap 1, you came as a rocket while I was lifting to let room to Natan. Sorry for the contact, but a 3 wide at T1 isn't that careful  Grin
I had a hard work to backup after the crash, but in the end I had a good fight with Ronnie that did two mistakes in a row and I could pass him.

The pace you and Tome were going we were ALL backmarkers! Astonishing. I really do not comprehend how you keep it on the road at those speeds. It is also bloody difficult to get out of the way, because although you leaders drive at 100%, us backmarkers usually drive at 150% which is why we are so slow. laugh

Fulvio made the beginners mistake of turning up early and found himself promoted  Roll Eyes  (Cheers for help with the server)

Bernie couldn't get the transistors in his wireless sorted so we had to move over to an Italian Coffee Bar for the fight...

Some naughty boys turned up late without a note form their Mums...

Nobody got hurt too badly...

SO... The results (unofficial until review of course, although I am not modding this one) were:

Evil      Rockers   1st       50pts
FMG      Mods      2nd       41pts
Fulvio      Mods      3rd       33pts
Ronnie      Rockers   4th       26pts
Tommie      Mods   5th   20pts
Badblood                Rockers   6th   15pts
Bernie      Rockers   7th   11pts
Natan      Mods      8th   8pts
FragFritz                Mods   9th   6pts
Skymole      Rockers   10th   5pts
Maddog      Rockers   11th   4pts

So ROCKERS   111pts
   MODS      108pts

ROCKERS win by 3! Was it fair. NO! Actually it is worth noting that Bernie should have starred for the Mods but had a few pies stuck in his ears. This would have allowed John Roberts a role for the Rockers. Sadly John fainted when asked if he would drive a red car!

It is also worth noting that a certain rabid driver (slaver, slaver) who didn't quite make it past T1 (Tut tut) actually scored the 4pts that was the difference laugh

So all in all I think it is best if we call this one too close to call and you know what that means....

REMATCH! See you all next time.

LOLOL   That is something I am still trying to work out!!! when I looked at the laptimes that Tom and I were running, we were only marginally off lap record pace even allowing for the fact that we were locked in combat!!  Shocked

Great event Paul on a busy track which kept things interesting for all whether 1st or 11th. Some smoking speed shown by the top guys and commiserations to Tom, tough break. Oh and it has to be said, Martin, that start, you are a hero!

Results published and notwithstanding the fact that Bernie actually did more laps than the server could count, I am still claiming sixth and most places gained!

Well done all.

Weeeellll - I only have your word for it Bernie and, of course, I trust you implicitly but in this case it's my series, my replay and....

....my sixth place LOL

Sorry mate. Mind you we were teammates so it made no difference to the team points - just made me look better Cheesy
