Good to see such positive feedback here so far.

Not sure why the race ended a little early on a standard track, but we can always do lap counted races in future.

Obviously we need to fine tune these races if we are going to run a series, which is what these test races are for. Personally I'd love to do full length repli races, but as I said to H@L recently, I'd then have to take Wednesdays off work to recover  Shocked

Joking aside, I do think slightly longer races would make things less frantic as these sprints are just soooooo intense. Maybe half RL distance with 1x tyres which would equate to approx 50 mins total and entice us into looking after our tyres for a one stop strategy? or 2x tyres for a 2 or 3 stopper? I'd like to not do refuelling as this wasn't part of the formula back in the day....nice to keep it a bit real.

As far as car choice. I think that with a couple of exceptions it worked pretty well tonight.....at this track. I think the aim of keeping our times as even as possible is a sound one. A kind of self handicapping....after all there's no fun in racing away 30 secs from the rest of the field, but then it's even less fun to be 30 secs off the back. So maybe a bit of car/driver tweaking would is worth considering?

There is another half of this mod which is referred to as the "Missing Teams" (which completes the full grid from the '88 season). The quality is at least as good as these cars and it would give us a greater choice towards the lower end of the performance spread. Maybe this is something to consider for a future trial?

As for the race, good fun although I managed to work my way backwards for most of it. I was busy watching Geoffers in pit hoping he'd join and missed the start, so sorry for anyone who got slowed up in that. Had a nice little scrap with Legzy, his turbo V6 pulling away on the straights, but the better handling Benetton making time back in the corners. I slipped past when he made a mistake but then backed it into the armco trying to pull a gap. Lost my rear wing and then spun off at the next turn into the armco losing my front wing and damaging suspension Roll Eyes Pitted for repairs which took an age and then had a stop go for speeding. Car was not too bad after repairs but I got caught out a couple of times trying to push back. Tyre wear for me wasn't too bad.....20/20 even with all those spins, but then I'm usually good with tyres. angel

Thanks to all who gave this a go and hope to see you back for more next week.

Didn't have much luck. Lost both wings in lap one. Was attempting to pit and got CTD before entering pitlane. Still, it was fun in practice and I look forward to more races with these Smiley

Had great fun for how long it lasted.
Stayed out of trouble in the first lap and climbed a few positions.
But as usual I made a few mistakes what costed me a frontwing and a suspension.
Made it back to the pit and got all fixed in 2 minutes time .

Already 1 lap down and screwed up again and lost my wing again.
I was getting a bit frustrated and entered the pit too fast causing a stop-and-go .

Decided to quit and practice a bit more offline  angel

During practice and qualifing I was using the cars wing and fuel levels to try and get a lap time that was as close to SBG's as possible. So when the race started I was very surprised to see me and TT pull way from the rest of the grid Huh Looking back at it now though at least TT had some company in the race Grin

The Williams has great downforce which meant that I was quick through the corners, but down the straights TT just kept pulling away.

Eventually as TT's tyres started to go off I managed to get into positions where I was able to make some moves to overtake. Then just when I had a chance of getting a better run out of one of the corners I missed judged the exit and span the car on the grass slightly damaging my front wing (which thankfully didn't effect the handling at all) and losing 2 places in the process.

After that I put my foot down and caught the SBG & Ade battle which was shapping up nicely, as all three of us were catching TT at the front.
I decided to bail out of the battle on the track, because I could see that it could of become quite messy and switched my tatics to changing my tyres, which were at 20 wear anyway.

Shame about the early finish, would of been interesting to see where everyone would of finished.

I see Suzuka's next....the Williams will fun around there!!....please can I carry on driving it Mr GT, I promise to be slower next time Grin

I had not had much time to investigate the differences in the cars, which seem greater than I had thought
I look in the dealer view, and it says nothing. where do you see the info GT?

I think TT's experience is tainted by driving the "masochist's choice" I tried Ferri, Arrows,Williams, March
and Minardi. Ferri and March felt quite similar in my 2 or 3 laps in each testing, yet I "think" Ferrari at
that time were still plugging away with an outdated longgg V12? whereas the March was a V6 Turbo?
You would think the Ferri would be very tail heavy, but it isn't. I decided to see what SBG meant about
the Arrows being nuts, so tried lots of rear wing/less front wing/hard front and still the thing drives
like a 911 with extra concrete and lead weights hanging off the rear bumper, damm thing wants to swap
ends into every corner. I believe (rightly or wrongly) that if you'd have driven a Ferri or March you would have
had less trouble with worn tyres. My ferri was not particularly more difficult to drive at the end, just was
a lot slower. Maybe my "kind" setup helped dunno, but I had more trouble not spinning with heavy fuel for
the first few laps (witness Laz heroically not ramming me up the chuff while I was being super cautious early on)
than with worn tyres. My wings were quite high, I think I ended up with 37/39 and quite hard front
FOr me the Williams was tail heavy, the Arrows even more, the March and Ferri were less so.
I need to try all the cars to figure what the relative attributes are.
I think with the relatively high tyre wear even with hards, this is one series that would suit stops
though I don't really enjoy them, I think it would make the racing more varied.
Oh, where do you get these tyre wear numbers from? all I see is a bar which is green at the top
and graduates down through mucky brown to red as the tyre wears, untill there is nothing left of the bar.

The only info I have really is what I've gathered myself from lots of testing with these cars mainly at Silverstone88, Spa88 and of course Brno. There is also some lap data at Pilsbierbude under "Best Laps", but this is less useful because of the variation in drivers and the fact that most choose the faster cars like the McLaren or the fezza.

Regards the Arrows, it was always going to be the nutter's choice but I hadn't realised tyre wear would be that much of an issue with it.....but isn't that why we have test races anyway? I've just had a few laps and the wear on the left front does look severe, but there again it was popping in some very quick times...1:35.776  with TT at the wheel:o I reckon the right race length could bring the tyre/performance balance back to make the Arrows much more useful.

I see Suzuka's next....the Williams will fun around there!!....please can I carry on driving it Mr GT, I promise to be slower next time Grin

You were seriously quick at Brno Jim.....check out that fastest laptime  Shocked I doubt that you'll be getting any slower with more practise so I'd be getting my agent to start talking with other teams if I were you  Wink

As for the rest of us. If we look at the laptimes, 7 of the field were lapping within a second of each other and had all put in a lot of practise to achieve this. I think it's fair to say that those who were below those times were there because of a lack of time to practise for this.

We maybe still need to do some tweaking though which hopefully the test races will allow us to do.

Am I on the right track with this chaps? I just want to make it as enjoyable and challenging as possible for everyone.

That lap time was with new rubber and 40 ltrs of fuel though angel

TBH before Sunday I was lapping in the mid 1:37's, but when Ade suggested to try the car with a higher wing setup I couldn't believe the improvement in stability and speed I had going through the corners.
What I'm trying to say is, it's all Ade's fault Cheesy

For the next race I'll make sure I take a slower car...only slightly slower mind Wink

No, mate. I am just that slow. My only excuses is that I drove around with 160 liters after my pitstop.

Had severe bumping problems during praccy. In the end lowered the Real World Movement, G-Force effect and FF strength to 50%.

Congrats SBG with the win. Amazing to see the fast cars zoom past. It's not easy to anticipate faster cars with this speed!

Thanks GT for organizing. If I could commit to the series, I wouldn't mind driving a slower car.

Great preparation for the Senna2010 Movie btw.
