Moderator's Report

A full review of lap one has thrown up a few incidents below. We don't penalise for a straight forward loss of control but all drivers should remember to be extra cautious on lap one due to the amount of traffic and the fact they have cold tyres.
No reported incidents for this race.

Server replay time: 0h00m46s

On the start grid Jethro is in last place. He sits on the grid with his wheel locked right then takes off rapidly whilst moving to the right. Meanwhile Ivan is having a slow start with John cautiously looking to go round him. Jethro clips John spinning him.
Therefore it appears Jethro had every intention of trying a pass up the inside straight off the line. Our Racing Etiquette has this;
When starting, each driver must make sure they keep their car straight and fully in control.
Drivers must remember that their tyres are cold on lap 1. They should not attempt any overtaking moves unless they are sure it is safe to do so.
Any driver who, by not complying with the above rules, causes another car to crash or take severe avoiding action may be penalised.

Whilst not having a perfect rule to fit this we do have;
Blatant Side by Side contact: Penalty 2 Places
On a straight, the overtaking car moves out to overtake but cuts back in too early. The victim made no mistakes and was driving their normal line at normal speed. The shunter made no allowance for the victim whatsoever and was in full control when the incident took place. There was no loss of control. Penalty for overtaking driver.

Jethro should have been far more cautious and not attempted to gain places in that manner from the start line.

Server replay time: 0h01m32s

Rick loses control of his car going into the corner causing a concertina pile-up which includes Evil, Bob and Will. All drivers did their best to avoid it.
This is classed as a racing incident but it is a reminder to be aware you are running on cold tyres and be extra cautious on lap one.

  • Rick Naumanadvice — Take extra care on lap one

Server replay time: 0h02m17s

Arf loses control in the corner.
He does the right thing and stays still to let others by, no one is affected.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h02m22s

Bob loses control a bit behind Arf but it doesn't appear to be due to Arf's incident. Jethro is held up slightly but otherwise there is no knock-on effect.

Moderator's Report

As regards the full lap one review similar comments to the Works race apply ie we don't penalise for a straight forward loss of control but all drivers should remember to be extra cautious on lap one due to the amount of traffic and the fact they have cold tyres. There were three major pile-ups on the first lap, two of which can be put down to a loss of control.
There were, unsurprisingly, quite a few resets in this race but pleased to report everyone complied with the stop and go / one reset only rules.
One general comment. Time and again, where a rear end collision is involved, we see the explanation being "the driver in front braked earlier then I expected". To quote the GPL Recommended Driver Behaviour; "If you are behind then you have the responsibility to drive in a manner that will not lead to you running into a car ahead. It is your responsibility not to run into the car in front of you. Even if their braking zones occur earlier than yours would normally, then tough luck. You have to anticipate these possibilities and drive accordingly." That is not to say we allow a carte blanche of erratic or dangerous driving but the only time this excuse could apply is if the car in front really does do something that could not be expected. If you haven't followed them for a lap or two how do you know where their normal brake point is? You can't assume it's the same as your own. Common sense applies but the onus is very much on the following driver and our rules reflect this.
Finally, an incident below highlights the dangers of not exiting a race immediately when you cannot continue. It is highly dangerous for others to sit sprawled across the track so please exit in a timely fashion.

Server replay time: 0h00m49s

Mike T loses control off the line. A good opportunity to quote our etiquette; "When starting, each driver must make sure they keep their car straight and fully in control."
The swerving causes an unavoidable touch from Fabio which compounds Mike's predicament. Mike did the right thing and waited for the field to pass, no one had to reset.

  • Michael Turneradvice — Take care to stay in control at the start

Server replay time: 0h01m21s

Fabio loses control. He does the right thing and waits for the track to clear.
As a knock-on effect Sky hits Nigel, normally a Rear End Shunt but it was primarily due to the field suddenly slowing and the drivers vision of the incident being obscure.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h01m33s

Al B hits Mike in the rear, simples. It can't be said Mike braked unexpectedly as it was the first lap and you have to expect the unexpected. In the consequent furore Billy can't avoid hitting Al.

Accordingly the rules have this;
Blatant Rear End Shunt: Penalty 2 Places
The victim made no mistakes and was driving their normal line at normal speed. The shunter made no allowance for the victim whatsoever. The shunter was in full control.

Server replay time: 0h01m43s

Bernie loses control and consequently Steve has to slow but no other ill effects and no contact.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h01m57s

As a consequence of the above incident Mike (miner) takes a Shift/R. Unfortunately he respawns directly into traffic with a consequent pile-up involving Mike T, Fabio and Al B.
This falls under Bad Shift R territory. Factors to consider as regards a penalty are;
Did the driver manoeuvre his damaged car to a place where he knew his car would respawn off the racing line?
Did the driver wait until he was sure there were no approaching cars before he took a shift R?

Yes he did wait but no he couldn't actually avoid respawning onto the line. There are two options here;

Simple Bad Shift R: Penalty 2 Places
The resetting driver DID consider where his car would respawn but was unaware of any other cars (couldn't see or hear, or expect another car to be near). Contact was made because other drivers had no chance of avoiding the respawned car.

Unfortunate Bad Shift R: Racing Incident
The resetting driver had no choice. The most likely scenario for this incident is a mass crash at turn 1 on lap 1 where respawned cars are likely to be hit.

It raises the question as to whether a driver should consider retirement as an option when there is no choice but to reset on the line. I think that would be slightly harsh. Mike did all he could under the circumstances by waiting and GPL let him respawn into traffic. It would seem highly unfair to penalise someone for actually doing the right thing under the circumstances, what he did was neither deliberate or careless and the result was just unfortunate. Accordingly 'Unfortunate Bad Shift R' is the only appropriate option, Mike did all he could to make sure it was safe and we can't ask for more then that.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h02m59s

Sky hits Hannah in the rear. Again pretty clear cut, from checking others at that point Hannah wasn't particularly slow, if anything Sky was going a lot faster then other drivers normally did here.

Accordingly the rules have this;
Blatant Rear End Shunt: Penalty 2 Places
The victim made no mistakes and was driving their normal line at normal speed. The shunter made no allowance for the victim whatsoever. The shunter was in full control.

Server replay time: 0h13m59s

Martin hits Hannah whilst attempting to lap.
This is a classic scenario; Hannah moves to let Martin through at the same time as Martin goes to overtake expecting Hannah to stay on the racing line.
The problem here is there was a lack of understanding and it was primarily on Hannah's side. Going towards the corner H did not make it clear what he was doing. Of a lesser evil Martin could see Hannah was wavering and was not directly under pressure so perhaps could have held back.
This is swings and roundabouts so, under the circumstances, it will fall under a racing incident.

Server replay time: 0h20m27s

Hannah loses control and Billy cannot avoid a collision.
This is a racing incident however, of more concern, is the fact that Hannah sat on track upturned in a dangerous position for approximately 30 seconds.
Having taken a reset already there were no other options but to leave the race and he should of immediately exited rather then causing a potential danger to other drivers still racing.

I do not know the exact circumstances and it may be Hannah was having difficulties hitting 'esc' as sometimes happens.

So here we are the first race of the season in those 67 beasts, and it's a tough one at the twisty streets of Monaco.

The Works will run on PRO Damage and Privateers will run on Intermediate Damage with the allowance of ONE shift-R reset. No Shift-Rs are allowed in practice unless authorized by the moderator. A Shift-R (fault or not) MUST be followed by a Stop & Go. A Shift-R for tyres/fuel is not allowed. Any driver taking more then ONE Shift-R OR failing to take a Stop & Go will be disqualified from the race result.

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:50 pm UK Time

Reserve drivers should not join the server(s) until there are only 30 minutes of qualifying left. Please restrict chat to pit messages. Moderating will be by reported incidents only, however the moderators reserve the right to review any incident with a particular emphasis on lap one. The aim is to review the race the following weekend so incident reports should be submitted within five days of the race (ie the following Friday). We're hopeful most incidents can be resolved amicably and recommend a days deep breath with a replay review before posting. A sorry in the forum won't be taken as an automatic admission of guilt by the moderators. There will be FULL moderation of lap one regardless of whether you submit an incident report.

With the token system chassis strategy will be a factor. A driver must have sufficient tokens for the chassis he drives in the race.  Any driver who does not have sufficient tokens will be disqualified from the result and his tokens will be set to zero.

Chassis costs;
Lotus 20 / Eagle 17 / Ferrari 15 / Brabham 10 / Cooper 5 / Honda 3 / BRM 0

To see your current tokens hover your mouse over your total points on the Works or Privateers championship standings pages. Ten tokens will be added when you cross the start line.

The Monaco Grand Prix has been run since 1929, and is widely considered to be one of the most important and prestigious automobile races in the world, alongside the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans (informally known as the Triple Crown of Motorsport). The circuit has been called "an exceptional location of glamour and prestige." The race is held on a narrow course laid out in the streets of Monaco, with many elevation changes and tight corners as well as a tunnel, making it one of the most demanding tracks in Formula One. In spite of the relatively low average speeds, it is a dangerous place to race.
The first race in 1929, was organised by Anthony Noghès under the auspices of the "Automobile Club de Monaco", and was won by William Grover-Williams driving a Bugatti. The event was part of the pre-Second World War European Championship and was included in the first Formula One World Championship in 1950. It was designated the European Grand Prix two times, 1955 and 1963, when this title was an honorary designation given each year to one grand prix race in Europe. Graham Hill was known as "Mr Monaco" due to his five Monaco wins in the 1960s. Brazil's Ayrton Senna has won the race more times than any other driver, with six victories, winning five races consecutively between 1989 and 1993.

On the plus side I mearly had to cross the road to reach the casino's bar and drown my sorrows!  Roll Eyes

I'm absolutely drenched in sweat now, eugh....

Hi all,

Fantastic race thrown in the garbage bin due to my PC deciding to call it quits!  censored .

After I did a new PB in quali, I decided to try out my race setup. After a while I suddenly noticed 'P2' on my pitboard. It was that darn Muttram guy again Tongue . So for the last 10 minutes I got back to quali mode to hopefully beat Tim's time. Right at the end I did everything right in a single lap and did a 1:25.98, which is a PB by miles and miles.

Glad to be on pole and out of trouble on lap 1, I tried to pull away from Tim in his Brabham. But it turned out to be impossible to shake him off, and he eventually had a real go at the last hairpin when he nearly took the lead! I managed to defend first place and the huge battle continued, just like at the 1965 Pro race last Tuesday. Then, I saw Tim running wide at Tabac so I had a little breathing space. Half a lap later, he vanished from my mirrors completely, followed by a little message 'Tim Muttram67 disconnected'. When I saw we pulled a one minute lead over Evil in his Honda, I thought I had it in the bag. I was about to enter T1 when somebody suddenly threw on old rag in my face... Black screen! censored Grumble...

Tom.

The usual disastrous start to the season for me. I messed up the start necessitating a ShiftR and shortly after was held up by a roadblock at the hairpin. Another car doing a ShiftR spawned next to me sending me flying and necessitating a second ShiftR and the end of the race. Ah well, things can only get better as the song goes.

My fist ever 67 race after all these years doing 65s and 69s and I got tipped on my lid at the hairpin so it would have been me that spawned next to you I think. I have 2 new monitors and Prib was messed up because of the different resolution so I turned it off for the race.

I waited about 30 seconds for the field to pass before doing a SHIFT-R but obviously they weren't all past. Sorry.

I spent the rest of the race mainly pointing forwards but occasionally not, and I've never had more spins in a single race but the car kept going albeit a little unpredictable at times and the spotters occasionally saw some issues with it. The race was a case of chasing Fabio, spinning, chasing Fabio, spinning, so I eventually postponed a spin long enough to pass Fabio and managed to pull away from him once clear.

Looking forward to the rest of the season as Monaco was not the ideal first 67 race for me but I did go green while practising offline for it.

Results uploaded, any Incident Reports by close of play Friday please. A provisional review of the Privateers shows, despite there being quite a few resets, everyone complied with the rules and no-one took more then one.

After tweeking my race set up and P3 in qually I was looking forward to a decent finish but managed to spin it twice on consecutive laps at "Portiau" and lost a few places .

Made it back up to P3 but  pushing too hard too soon in an effort to close the gap to Ronnie in front I did  a complete pigs ear of "threading the needle" (aka the chicane ) launched the car "arse over elbow"  (as they say in france )

Was so disgusted with myself clean forgot about s/r being allowed untill I had hit the ESC button  Undecided

Grats to Martin in the flying Coop and to Ronnie and Steve in the BRM brigade for there podium finishes  Smiley

Had to miss this although I am not great at Monaco (yeh yeh I know - not great anywhere...). Thought it would be interesting to see what I could do in the Honda because my best is 1:36 in a Fezza. Nice clean lap I thought, yeh, nailed the chicane... easy at Gasworks, don't ruin it now....

...1:42  laugh

Good one to miss. Well done Martin.

The 65 race had been a big disappointment to me, with a sure 2nd place, erased by a severe bout of the warps.  But with the realization my connection was not at fault, I'd hopes of making the Privateers finish line, this time around. Tongue

A clear track, and a good connection helped, in grabbing pole position.  But an omnipresent Ronnie lurked not far behind, and a good start was vital to my scheme.  Once under way, the car performed beyond expectation, and the gap to 2nd grew steadily.  So, the only threat to my purpose, would be the ether, the lapper's, and the potential for a lapse in concentration.

It's not easy to get into a rhythm at Monte Carlo.  Nor is it easy to get bored, as I reminded myself, with the odd bump along the way.  I even managed to dive nose first into the chicane's bales, on one lap - surveyed the entire scene along the waterfront, and continued without damage. Grin

The last couple of laps were spent listening for any odd rattles, or the ghastly sound of an engine spluttering, as it ran out of fuel!  Thanks for the congrats - I was off doing a well deserved victory lap.   Winning is great!  Seven of us survived the tortures of a tortuous track, so while I was victorious, I think we all were!  smartass

Great qualifying and race Martin. Knowing your demon starts my plan was to settle into a steady second place and worry about trying to reel you in during the second half of the race. Bad plan as a swarm of B's made life tough (Brick walls, Bales, Backmarkers and Bird). Then to cap it all the engine exploded so after a shift-r/s&g I was happy to keep Steve at bay, just, and finish second. Congrats again on a flying start to the season and to Steve on the podium slot. Anyone who finished this one deserves a medal. Commiserations Bernie but we know you will be back. I'm hoping the next race at Westwood is not so claustrophobic. Ciao.
