Moderator's Report

A popular circuit last season for the Novices makes a welcome return.

Cookie makes a good getaway as Karliss spins his tyres too much off the line allowing Cookie to just about dive into T1 ahead of him.

Karliss did well to avoid a collision and the brave move could have ended in disaster.

Server replay time: 0h01m20s

Fran Molteni tries to follow Blito past Norbert into Double Droite. A combination of a slipstream from Fabio, who he has just overtaken, and cautious braking from Norbert (understandable on lap one), means that Fran closes very quickly on Norbert who has little chance to react and make room. As a result Norbert turns in and the two collide.

Fran was very hard and late on the brakes especially as this was Lap 1 when we always advise drivers to take extra care, and that is the reason that the race post had this:
"As always I would remind you to take care on Lap 1 through the intitial section at Courbe Armand Brouzes and again under braking for Double Droite de l’Aerodrome where the field is likely to get compressed again."

I think Fran would have made the corner had he not hit Norbert, but drivers really do need to learn to take care on Lap1 when a race is seldom won but often lost.

We don't want to discourage overtaking but this was a crazy move with little chance of success.

As Fran rejoins following his off, he almost collects Fabio and pulls right across the front of Al Baldwin.

This rejoin could easily have incurred further penalties, again given that the race post mentions the field getting compressed at this part of the track on lap 1.

Server replay time: 0h01m42s

This incident really begins in the confusion at Double Droite with cars jostling for position on and off the track.
Through DD Al can see Jonny on his inside and gives him room.

As the two of them exit DD and approach the kink Jonny is gaining on Al and moving alongside in a valid passing attempt.

Al seems to be unaware of him at this point and has not seen him in the mirrors since DD so he must assume that Jonny is alongside but he turns in on him.

Jonny saw the contact developing and tightened his line but Al hits him and ends up cartwheeling down the track in tuck position with a double twist.

Server replay time: 0h02m25s

BadBlood and Hendy contest T1 and approach it side by side.

Paul is expecting Hendy to concede the corner which he does not and Paul suffers a warp contact as he takes too tight a line.

Only Paul is affected.

Warp Incident.

Server replay time: 0h02m28s

DU Fossa is hit by a recovering JonnyO who is out of control as his car moves back on to the track.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h03m19s

Hendy Nichols is chasing JonnyO and as they brake for Virage du Parc, Hendy is normally later on the brakes than Jonny which catches him out.
Hendy tries to avoid the inevitable by turning inside Jonny who takes the racing line before being taken out by Hendy.

Server replay time: 0h03m32s

Economia is last in a train of battling cars approaching the final corner and takes a tighter line to the right of the usual racing line.

Billy is on the normal line and closes on him under braking, veering to to the right before making light contact.

Both cars go off left onto the grass.

  • Billy Nobrakespenalty — Simple Rear End Shunt — 1 place lost

Server replay time: 0h11m40s

Fabio and Jason head towards a shared fate at Double Droite side by side with Fabio on the outside.

Neither driver blinks as their feet hover over the brake pedal.

Unfortunately Jason should have pressed his a little earlier as what should have been a tighter inside line turns into a slide outwards towards Fabio and the two make contact.

Server replay time: 0h11m46s

Fran chases Axel towards Double Droite and is much harder and later on the brakes than Axel and he closes up quickly under braking.

Axel goes to cover the inside line as he senses a move coming but that is the line that Fran has picked and the two collide.

There are a few coincidences that contribute to this incident and all have to be considered.
(1) A few seconds earlier Fabio is off the circuit and the yellow flags are waving.
(2) Axel sees the yellow and moves to the inside while slowing more than usual to give Fabio room.
(3) Fran only sees the yellow flags at the last minute, if at all, and does not expect Axel to move over under braking.
(4) Fran is committed to the inside line and stays on the brakes to try and avoid Axel.

At first this appears to be a block by Axel who sees a passing attempt coming but I have to give both drivers the benefit of the doubt, Axel for slowing under yellows and Fran for not being able to clearly see the yellows.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h25m42s

Al Baldwin spins at Double Droite and attempts to spin around before continuing.

Unfortunately his spin puts him facing the racing line and he drives onto the racing line as he sets off again.

Unfortunately Bill chose this precise moment to arrive on the scene and has to take avoiding action to miss Al.

As Al sat facing the wrong way he could neither see nor hear Billy approaching, but to spin in such a way was a risk and he could have simply driven toward the outside of the corner and continued while avoiding the racing line.

Server replay time: 0h27m43s

Fabio and Blito collide at DD for a second time, this time on the exit.
Fabio has passed Blito on the entry and Blito responds at the exit by trying to retake the position but strays too far towards Fabio who suffers a warp contact and spins.

Blito sees he is straying over and tries to correct to the right but leaves it too late.

Blito could have avoided this incident by keeping to his own side of the track but the only contact was a warp contact otherwise the two would have been able to continue.

BTW - well done to the new drivers.. especially our new backmarker - "bookie" Westbrook.. VERY considerate when being lapped .. It was easy to spot the move well in advance.. Good work fella! Keep at it m8, the speed will come soon  Smiley

Shift R after turn 1 but this engine lasted the whole of the way until the back straight. 2 engines in less than 1 lap. The 2nd I suppose from revving too hard from cold.

Watching your replays Norm, you are still speed shifting which kills engines.

You must lift for every gear change.

My race was fun. I’ve not been able to drive the 65 cars much lately and I didn’t get any practice on this track so I was expecting a lonely run at the back.

I booted up my PC at 8:30 and started to learn the track, I used my setup from Watkins glen which seemed OK. Cookie was on the server along with a few other drivers and I soon realised that I was going to be slow. When Qualifying started I just went out in my race car with full fuel to continue learning the track. I was very happy with 10th place on the grid, as I never expected to be so high.

At the start of the race I took it easy, and was in a nice position keeping out of the way. On the first lap there was an off up ahead, I got past Johnny and continued. A little bit later Johnny and I had a coming together, I didn’t even know he was there. I did check my mirrors before entering the corner, and he wasn’t anywhere to be seen. Because it was the first lap, I was being careful anyway, and left quite a bit of room on the inside, I personally think it was a racing incident, but because it was on the first lap the moderators will look at it and tell us what they think.

After the little coming together I was left upside down, while the rest of the grid passed me. I needed a shift & r and took a 10 second pitstop at the end of the lap. At this point I was last by a long way. I got on with the task of clawing back the pack, I am quite proud of not only my lap times but also my consistence during the race. I managed to get a few places back as people where kind enough to drive off the track at various places.

I had quite a few nice battles on my way up though the pack. I was pushing quite hard to catch/stay with some people but managed not to have any off’s. I also didn’t get lapped, which again is much more than I expected. Overall I’m very happy with my place, and race at Albi, it was a fun race for me, with plenty of action.

Sorry to see that some people got Disco’d, with only 3 laps to go. It gave me 2 extra places but I don’t think anyone wants to gain places that way.

Curious thing about the screen freeze is that both Fran I and I went on lap 27... at the point I froze fran was showing +5 up the road and I was at 2nd last corner - this means fran must have been at the final corner on the lap... Did we have simultaneous freezing? Very odd.....

Now that I have calmed down a bit... frustrating as I span EIGHT - yes EIGHT times. How many times did I spin in practice? ZERO. Sigh. Seven of those were all my own work Sad Should have calmed down and not tried so hard but I did spin in odd places, just couldn't seem to find any rhythm last night.

Still 30 seconds faster than last year so at that rate I should win it in Season 25!

Funnily enough I won a test race on UKGPL3 fair and square - only seven laps or so but not one over 1:18. Not sure what changed although I wasn't feeling too hot last night. Annoying thing was that when I did get some rhythm I could drive with the leaders fairly easily. Sad

Funny season for me, this one.

Well I would hope that somebody held in such high esteem as myself may get through LOL.

It's a hard habit to break but a very necessary one.

HOW TO BREAK THE SPEEDSHIFT HABBIT
---------------------------------------

Practice offline, taking the GT mods Lola and choosing the "realistic" damage model..

It *might* last a lap or two if you speedshift Wink

Seriously, thats how I practice for UKGPL events - always on realistic damage. Its made me a much smoother and steadier driver, which has delivered extra pace in the long run!

John Cooper was a clever man, but it seems his use of Italian, was not good enough to have a couple of chicanes added, to the straights at Albi.  Without that minor tweak, even a major tweak to my Coops. setup would be insufficient to overcome the forces of nature.

With practice under way, my car was a second off it's expected pace, and I commenced to tweak.  Sadly, my new online connection has been giving me trouble, and it decided to drop me, in mid-tweak.  A lucky reserve driver quickly took to the track, which saved be getting discoed from my IP again.

So, well done to Karliss, for getting his race finish turned around, because his car was turned around, in all the right places!  Along with Fabio, and everyone who didn't disco . . . grumble! Undecided

Ok I'll swear an oath in front of a JP if necessary that my foot lifts off the throttle when I change up. Not for long enough it would seem is all I can think of. I have been upshifting at about 9400rpm in previous races & survived & honestly I haven't blown an engine for weeks in training when I have had damage "on". Must admit I pushed the limits a bit when Molteni was gaining.  I am not ungrateful for the advice so thanks for that I realise you do it in my interest.
Others do use higher rpm than me so its obviously the up & the downshift where my errors occur.

can someone explain what is SPEEDSHIFT?

about engine blows - its hard to understand when program decides to do random failure when not, cos at watkins i blow my engine for the first time in league races ,and it was setup that i did test race before... here i had strange engine blow in qual. with the same race setup on long gears.
only way how to avoid it during race as i know is
1.avoid engine braking as much possible
2. dont shift upger on red mark, shift "5min" earlier
3.go slow corners/hairpins on 2nd (roll them)
maybe something more... that will deffinetley drop 1 sec or maybe less per lap but in strategy terms work very good.
but i allways keeping in mind, that program algorithm live his own life... so i can do only few things to minimaize engine blow

Or you are not timing it correctly.

When you change up on your replays your rev counter needle jumps up until the higher gear is engaged, often to the red line and that is where the damage is done.

You can hear it without even looking to, your engine screams as you change up.

can someone explain what is SPEEDSHIFT?

Where you drive a GPL car like a modern F1 car and change gear by flicking the paddle without lifting the throttle.

It works in No Damage settings but even in Intermediate damage it will blow engines.
