Moderator's Report

A clean lap one excepting one report (below). All drivers who took a reset subsequently took and stop and go.

Server replay time: 0h01m39s

After a solo spin Geoff rejoins safely and closes on Hannah. Geoff looks for a passing opportunity and a question is raised as regards blocking. There is no collision. The nearest rule that fits is this;
"Marginal Blocking/Weaving: Caution
The blocking driver changed his line ONCE in RESPONSE to the following car's movement but well BEFORE the following car was committed to his line. No contact is made."

However, whilst it does look like Hannah moves across early for the corner, it cannot be said to be a blocking attempt. It is not clear any movement was in response to the car behind and, being lap one, Hannah's line cannot be taken as unusual.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h01m58s

Just after the line so NOT lap one.
On the straight Mike T is attempting a pass on the left and has over 100% overlap but has NOT cleared Billy. He then moves slightly right, presumably to line up for the upcoming corner, and hits the side of Billy. He could not see Billy in his mirrors and therefore must assume he had not cleared him.
The rules have this;
"Blatant Side by Side contact: Penalty 2 Places
On a straight, the overtaking car moves out to overtake but cuts back in too early. The victim made no mistakes and was driving their normal line at normal speed. The shunter made no allowance for the victim whatsoever and was in full control when the incident took place. There was no loss of control. Penalty for overtaking driver."

However, in mitigation, Billy should know Mike is on the left but still uses up a large chunk of the track ie he could have gone slightly more right to allow more clearance. That said Billy stayed in his position and had every right to be there.
Under the circumstances the penalty will be reduced by one place.

Server replay time: 0h08m42s

Geoff is closing on Hannah to overtake and there is a rear end collision.
The question of blocking is raised but Hannah does not appear to take a different line to nomal so the onus was on Geoff to make a clean pass. It makes no difference as to whether your intention to pass is clear to the driver in front; when racing the lead driver has every right to maintain their defensive line provided they do not block or weave.
The rules have this;
"Blatant Rear End Shunt: Penalty 2 Places
The victim made no mistakes and was driving their normal line at normal speed. The shunter made no allowance for the victim whatsoever. The shunter was in full control."

Server replay time: 0h09m20s

Ross rejoins the track and collides with Hannah.
From Hannah's perspective Ross was off the track, he slowed slightly and then Ross just drove into his side with no opportunity for Hannah to avoid the collision. From the other perspective Ross did initially wait but appears to have bogged down in the grass whilst doing a rejoin. He probably could not hear Hannah approaching due to his revving to get out but a glance to the right would have shown the approaching car.
The rules have this;
"Blatant Bad Rejoin: Penalty 2 Places
The rejoining driver was NOT in full control but nevertheless attempted to drive straight back onto the racing line without any consideration for other drivers and contact was made."

However allowance needs to be made for the fact Ross did, initially, try to ensure it was safe to rejoin. When he found himself struggling he should then have done another check but that is easier said then done in the heat of the moment.
Under the circumstances I am going to reduce the penalty to a warning.

Grats to Ross on an epic win and an epic week all round.

To be honest despite a PB in qualifying to claim pole, I was happy to pick up good points in the BRM. Engine woes and a trip onto the the superglue grass on the way back to the pits to do a stop and go pretty much scuppered my early form. I decided to settle for safety and a good finish. Having said that I could not resist picking up my pace again when Ross came past and nearly paid the price trying to chase him down. Well done Fabio on third, the race was yours for the taking, better luck next time. Ditto Martin.

Apologies to anyone who I may have come across in qualifying. But with the short track and the number of people out it was pretty cut and thrust at times. Sorry if I screwed anyones fast lap.

Looking forward to driving something a little faster next time out, roll on Mexico!

Absolutely woeful display in Queensland from me. Held prov pole for a few laps early in Qually which I had no idea about. With all the traffic about it was not safe to take your eyes from the road. Worse than the evening peak on the Western Ring Road. Got bumped to 4th and surprised myself by claiming 2nd in the last minute of Qually, also with a PB. It was so hard to put a clean lap together or find enough space to develop a couple of quick ones. Led to silly anxious mistakes, trying to push the car before it was ready to be pushed. Grats Ray on lifting the Pole silverware

Got a good start and followed Ray down to Karussell for the first time. We'd gapped the field by a bit and there was no pressure......but I still managed to put the outside rear on the grass at the exit and at the mere thought of applying throttle, it snapped right and deposited me in the inside guardrail.. :'( Last again, after all that work and effort in Qually. Spent the next half lap trying to find a hole big enough to pass, an all over the place Hurricane Hannah. Not til the Kink, was I able to set off after the pack again. This was just the first of 10 major and minor off track excursions, some traffic assisted.......some not. Lap 2 saw me run a bit wide through the kink before Hungry Corner and stick two wheels firmly in the glue pot that is the track verge. It grabbed the car, threw it with some force against the guardrail then parked me up on the red dirt bank overlooking the track. No driving out of this mess sadly.....Reset and S n G  time. Got going again, and frankly.....most of the rest is a blur..even after viewing the replay. Apologies for knocking you off in the braking area for Karussell Hannah, but you were all over the shop, and all I could do was hold my line tight down the inside of the track and hope you weren't there when I arrived.

I don't think I clouted anyone else, but I must apololgize also to new Teamie Ray, for getting in your way at Hungry Corner, recovering from yet another stupid spin. I heard you coming, and though not able to see you, the note of the Bellowing Beast of Bourne informed me who it was. Sorry mate, I truly thought I'd left plenty of room for you and was surprised to see your eyes...big as dinner plates, in my mirror. Just before you clouted me and spun me yet again.  Undecided

Hearty congratulations Ross at the birth of our newest future UKGPL member, as well as your splendid drive to hold it all together (mostly) for 53 laps and a well earned victory. Also to the podium placegetters Ray and Fabio. Great drive Fabio, really deserved more, but sometimes it's just not to be. The Clark-Hill quinella at Lakeside had the Gundy so ecstatic he swallowed far too many cans of the local beverage known as  Castlemaine XXXX. I always wondered what XXXX meant, then realised it's simply the fact that Queenslanders can't spell BEER. Consequently the Gundy is postponing Ray's Palfry-giving ceremony, until his head stops splitting in two.  Cheesy
Finished fifth after all the dramas and was surprised really at the number of finishers in general. Far more than I had initially envisioned. Thank Heaven the Coop is built somewhat tank-like, because I dished it out at least 4 or 5 fence hits throughout the race. However, it took the punishment without even wincing.

Special mention to Bernie, when I was chasing you for fourth place. Couldn't even put a dent in the gap as hard as I tried, and then you stretched it from 6 to 9secs and at that, I settled for a drive to the finish rather than test another armco fence somewhere. Your new machine must really agree with you!. But turn all the power saving stuff off before next race mate. Mexico won't let you get away with driving blind.  Grin

On to Mexico Hombres

Congratulations Ross and more especially Mrs Ross for timing things so well that it allowed you to race. That must be true love  Roll Eyes

As for my race.... well 95% worked almost exactly to plan.

Try for a decent grid slot to avoid any Lap 1 problems on such a short track.
Don't push too hard in the early laps, just try and hold the leaders in sight.
Don't get too close to cars in front if they seem to be dicing in the early laps
Pick up places as this unforgiving track takes its toll
Maintain a steady pace and don't try and be a hero

So by lap 25 everything was going well and I was in a comfy 3rd spot. The only slight problem was that a quick check on my fuel showed that at this pace I was unlikely to get to the finish by about 2 laps  Undecided

OK start short shifting and coasting into corners, which initially dropped about a second of my lap times.
But, as I got used to using higher gears the time lost was only half a second and I was still saving fuel.
By 3/4 distance it looked like I would just about finish the race with the gas I had, so I kept with the short shifting as by now I was in 2nd spot and still way ahead of 3rd place man Arf.
Then things started to go wrong... Hristo was on a mission and it looked like he was going to lap me and it has been a long, long time since he has been able to do that.  I worked my nuts off improving my pace in the Honda to put a stop to that little game of Hristo's about 3 seasons ago!!!
So I upped my pace a little and I think H had a problem and the gap widened for a few more laps....maybe I would just sqeak it to the finish without being lapped.
Then I realised that I had totally screwed my fuel saving and I was in big fuel trouble AGAIN!

I gritted my teeth as Hristo caught me and I allowed him an easy pass  :'(
More short shifting and even taking corners a gear higher was beginning to repair the damage to me fuel load. But the problem with farting about with your gear chages and revs , is that you are shifting gears where you really don't want to and with just 4 laps to go I allowed my concentration to slip and an early upshift did not give me the power on oversteer to take me through a corner on the line I wanted. As a result I got a rear wheel on to the grass and the back end came around just in time to meet some convenient armco!!  With 3 wheels I might have considered carrying on, but with 2 wheels and both on the same side it was over!!

Grats to Arf and Fulvio for a well judged and careful race and to Hristo who was lapping at warp speed in his Waza. I don't think I could have stopped you lapping me even with the proper fuel level.

Grats to Arf and Fulvio for a well judged and careful race

"Well judged and careful" - I suppose so, I finished after all. What a mind **** it was to concentrate so hard for so long. There were lapses though - I had 4/5 offs. Only the last one really bothered me, cos it allowed Hristo to lap me for a second time very near the end of the race. I couldn't argue with the +1 classification, but +2 hurts.....

"Race".....mmm. Didn't feel like one. With all respect to Fulvio I never felt threatened for my position until I started spinning a lot towards the end (so Fulvio had better judgement and was more careful), and the gap between us halved. I only got to P2 as others went out, didn't overtake anyone, and only got into trouble when I tried to chase down Evil. And that was 30 seconds after deciding to attack, having got bored spending 20 laps or so just 5/6 secs behind.

Apart from that the race was almost as boring as my P3 in PSC on Friday. Yes, you read correctly - I got 2 podiums this weekend, and I'm moaning - does that make me a proper racing driver??? Cheesy

I guess to finish first, first you have to finish, so I shall try and take solace in the fact I have finished my last 3 races. Quite how I make the jump to be competitive head to head......well that's for a another day....

Bah Humbug!
