Started race with soft fronts & med rears, which is what I qualified with & they felt good in the early conditions, though I started making a couple of half spin errors as my car got more oversteery on corner entry due to wear/extra water. 20-25 mins in, it seemed to start raining harder & so I pitted.
What tyre though
Decided to go with inters front & back & after 1.5 laps I was regretting it
. They felt more grippy, but I was noticeably way slower than pre-pitting & they were pretty much all in the red overheating already
Decided to keep going with them & see what others were doing pitting/laptime wise, but then there was thunder & everyone who hadn't pitted did so. I was gutted, figuring they'd all probably put hard wets on & be on the right tyre for the conditions :'(. I took the lead at this point, with TT exiting the pits 7.5 secs behind.
But about a lap later the rain had reduced again & the inters were perfect, TT was gaining on me about 0.5 per lap, but I figured I'd have 2nd in the bag.
With 15 mins to go, I'd managed to maintain the gap to TT & then the rain stopped. Decide that I'll pit for my original tyres to finish the race as I can't imagine the conditions will change again... lost a few secs as I fiddled with XD setting the right tyres etc & just as I'm bracing to turn into the pits, the rain starts up again
.
So obviously I stayed out & from there i started to eek open the gap back to TT, who I guess was struggling with tyres by then?
Happy to have my 1st win in a loooooooong time, but it was certainly down to luck more than judgement
. Congrats to the rest of the podium & the other finishers.
Regardless of the win, I was actually losing interest in the race till the proper rain showed up (i.e. 20-25 mins in). We were down to only six cars, nobody to race & the rain just took me out of the comfort zone & forced a pitstop on me, the heavier rain gave me something to focus on & I thought that these cars handled the rain better than anything (other than PnG cars) we've ever used.
