Moderator's Report

East London is considered by some to be Kyalami's little brother but it is popular among the Novices and makes a welcome return where we had some good and close racing, some of it on the tarmac.

Server replay time: 0h00m58s

Fabio is battling with Fran and Economia on the run to T1.
Fabio wins this battle but goes too hot into T1 and rear ends Norbert, putting him into a spin before finally collecting him as he gets sideways.

Fabio should have avoided this collision but as he was in a 3 way battle with a car either side of him he may have lost sight of his braking point so I will mitigate 1 penalty place for the shunt but I will still apply the Lap 1 incident penalty place as all drivers need to take extra care into T1.

RogUK has to reset after getting caught up in the carnage but fails to take a Stop n Go

Server replay time: 0h01m20s

Karliss sits and waits patiently before rejoining.
He could have used all of the room off the track to his right to turn around and then drive alongside the track and rejoin more quickly.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h03m20s

Fran is following Paul towards the Esses but misjudges Paul's braking and rear ends him, knocking RogUK off in the process.

Paul seemed to brake a little earlier than usual and is slightly out of shape but it is still Fran's responsibility to avoid him.

Server replay time: 0h04m35s

Dave follows Du Fossa into the Esses when Du Fossa loses it, spins and blocks the track giving Dave nowhere to go.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h06m35s

Fran overtakes Billy under braking for the Esses but Billy doesn't realise he is there and turns in on him.

Only Billy is affected.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h10m08s

Fabio rear ends Pete Maestro into Beacon Bend.
Fabio entered at his normal speed but on the previous lap Pete had overshot a little and this lap was much slower in despite braking at the same place, he stayed on the brakes longer which caught out Fabio who had not seen Pete's problems on the previous lap as Fran had been in between them.

Server replay time: 0h25m20s

Hendy is chasing Norm along the straight and using his tow, but he misjudges his braking for T1 and read ends Norm.

Getting a bit tired of being unable to be consistent and frankly I don't understand these setups.

Hi Paul,

I think we all go though this, in fact I think I'm still in the phase myself. Best thing to do is to find a race setup that you are happy with and use it for all the races, just change gear ratios. After that just concentrate on your lines, brake sooner than you normally would and a little lighter and you’ll be surprised how quickly the lap times come down.

My race was a pleasant surprise for me. After seeing what the expected times where going to be in qualifying I very nearly didn’t bother trying to get a good lap. I tried anyway and was happy with 6th on the grid, also I got a PB so I couldn’t ask for any more than that.

At the start I was super cautious. I gave, and received plenty of room to those people around me. Cookie streamed past me at the start again, you’ll have to tell us the secret to your super starts. After that I just did some steady laps, and settled into my race rhythm. I wasn’t really catching anyone in front and I kept an eye on Prib to see if anyone was catching me. There were a couple of people closing me down from behind, but none got close enough to challenge until the last couple of laps, when Rainer when flying by me. I did get 4th place back when he spun on the last lap, but that was a great race debut for you and I’m sure we’ll be seeing more from you soon.

Overall I was pretty pleased with my race, and certainly better than my Monza effort. Thanks to Paul for the server, for me it was perfect.

My quali time was the best possible on this track and I did it in the last lap to get 8th on the grid.
The race start was good for me cause I could avoid all incidents and was 4th at the end of lap 1.
I followed Jonny in his tow as far as possible.
When the two leaders had their moment we passed them and some time later DuFossa was in my slipstream.
Defended my position well til 9th lap but this was too risky and so I let him pass in the last turn.
Driving like a robot to avoid any mistakes.
I had a very save setup and kept this 3rd position with DuFossa in sight til 2 laps to go.
Suddenly he spinned in the last hairpin and I got the second place as a present.

Hi Al,
this Cooper has 6 gears and I use them!
When racing 65s with Martin I allways wondered how fast he got out of the corners...

Feeling less sorry for myself this morning  Cheesy

Thanks for the advice chaps. The Honda isn't too bad but you have to tweak to get the tyres working (e.g. Watkins Glen worked well) but it seems easy to eff it up and turn it into a wobbly ice princess. I probably will take a different chassis next year because I feel like I am not learning how the cars work.

Qually - went really well under 1.28 isn't too slow & got me 7th.
Race - My race set up always is my qually set up with more motion lotion & I'd tried it pre race night & it was ok. On the night I couldn't get/keep any heat in the tyres which made turn 1 in particular very difficult & I had a few offs there & was shunted off as well.  All those behind caught up, passed, & pulled away easily so if some hadn't dropped out I think I could have finished 19th Sad. Did the last few laps with Bad Blood. We were good company for each other. No worries, there's another one in 2 weeks Grin

Well done the podium guys & Clutch in the Pro's & well done server UKGPL3 with absolutely no warping & nice to have a full grid. Unfortunately not so for some others so I was lucky. Paul, I agree with the advice to ditch the Honda as its difficult to drive.

Indeed, the Honda is simply different because of its different weight distribution and requires a different approach to its setup, and slightly different driving style. It was for that reason that myself and Evil told you before the start of the season that you're free to use any cars until you move up to Works/Pro, but i guess Paul is either too loyal or simply a masochist.  Cheesy

Apart from that and it's something I'm going to repeat in my race report for the Pro race, you can't expect results without serious practice and dedication. I'm saying this because for yesterday's race, assuming I'm supposed to be the top driver in that division, it turned out that I've done far more practice and spent much more time preparing than anyone else, and that seems rather wrong. One would expect the slower drivers or the less experienced drivers to spend more time practicing, preparing, learning and observing, for each race, compared to those at the front end of the field, otherwise we'll keep seeing those big gaps that give a false indication that handicapping is more necessary than it actually is.

I know it depends on available spare time, but until you realize nobody just goes quick and consistent without serious practice and improvement of race craft and car setup knowledge, complaining about performance is a bit of an insult to those who dedicate themselves and still struggle, or to those who tell you what's necessary to improve and you fail to acknowledge it. It's a matter of personal choice and life priorities - in that sense, what some of us gain in GPL you gain in other spheres of life, so should we complain about the things we're lacking there?  Wink You can't have everything!

I may give it a go but for developing a sense of how the cars drive maybe the Novices should adopt the Historics model where some are limited to chassis groups but you have free choice within those groups.

I seem to have developed a particular race style - repeated again last night. I use slightly different methods but conspire to be last on lap 1 - this time not even my fault as I got tagged in the bumper cars after turn 1. By the time I got going I was a bit in front of the leader (1 lap down) & spent the whole race trying not to get lapped. The only plus was that I was able to keep an even gap from the leader & if not for Rainiers debut performance would have collected fastest lap. Managed to pick up a few places & finish 11th. Got very close to Karliss on 3 occasions but lost it every time in the last corner.

Glad to see we are continuing to attract more drivers in the Novices but seemed to have lost a couple of the older campaigners - what happened to Maddog & Nigel Smith?

You should post in the mid-season review thread and suggest that. I'm disappointed how few of us have posted their opinions and desires in there...
