Moderator's Report

East London is considered by some to be Kyalami's little brother but it is popular among the Novices and makes a welcome return where we had some good and close racing, some of it on the tarmac.

Server replay time: 0h00m58s

Fabio is battling with Fran and Economia on the run to T1.
Fabio wins this battle but goes too hot into T1 and rear ends Norbert, putting him into a spin before finally collecting him as he gets sideways.

Fabio should have avoided this collision but as he was in a 3 way battle with a car either side of him he may have lost sight of his braking point so I will mitigate 1 penalty place for the shunt but I will still apply the Lap 1 incident penalty place as all drivers need to take extra care into T1.

RogUK has to reset after getting caught up in the carnage but fails to take a Stop n Go

Server replay time: 0h01m20s

Karliss sits and waits patiently before rejoining.
He could have used all of the room off the track to his right to turn around and then drive alongside the track and rejoin more quickly.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h03m20s

Fran is following Paul towards the Esses but misjudges Paul's braking and rear ends him, knocking RogUK off in the process.

Paul seemed to brake a little earlier than usual and is slightly out of shape but it is still Fran's responsibility to avoid him.

Server replay time: 0h04m35s

Dave follows Du Fossa into the Esses when Du Fossa loses it, spins and blocks the track giving Dave nowhere to go.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h06m35s

Fran overtakes Billy under braking for the Esses but Billy doesn't realise he is there and turns in on him.

Only Billy is affected.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h10m08s

Fabio rear ends Pete Maestro into Beacon Bend.
Fabio entered at his normal speed but on the previous lap Pete had overshot a little and this lap was much slower in despite braking at the same place, he stayed on the brakes longer which caught out Fabio who had not seen Pete's problems on the previous lap as Fran had been in between them.

Server replay time: 0h25m20s

Hendy is chasing Norm along the straight and using his tow, but he misjudges his braking for T1 and read ends Norm.

UKGPL Season 21 65 Novices Trophy
Race 7 East London

Round 7 of the Novices Trophy takes us to South Africa. Not to the familiar surroundings of Kyalami but even further south to the host of the 1965 South African Grand Prix in real life - Prince George Circuit in East London, Eastern Cape Province. Opened in the 1930s, it hosted the South African Grand Prix in 1934, and 1936 to 1939 when racing was halted due to World War II. Modified to meet Formula One regulations in 1959, the track was built into a seaside amphitheatre which hosted three rounds of the F1 South African Grand Prix in the 1960s. It was later deemed too small for Formula One cars, and the race was moved to Kyalami.

Jim Clark won the 1965 East London Grand Prix from pole in a Lotus.  His qualifying time was 1'27.2. If anyone matches that they will be doing well. The track is best described as flat & fairly simple to learn with lots of run off. This is the first time the Novices will have been there since Season 16.

Drivers should be especially careful on lap 1 as usual but especially under braking with cold brakes and tyres at T1 (Potters Pass). The hairpin at Cocabana is also very tight and could cause problems on Lap 1.

Somewhere between 1 and 200! To be honest I am not sure. I've got to sort out the loose grid and the Int Long length. It will be the ususal 40 mins race though. 26 or 27 I think.

In the Registration thread it says 26 laps.

I predict that your front runners would be doing at least 1:27, if not 1:26, on average in the race, and that means a race duration of about 37 minutes, so IMO you should either run 27 or 28 laps.

Thanks for that Al and H. The last race was 26 laps but only lasted 38 minutes so I have rounded up to 27 laps. If anyone crashes out on the last lap they can complain to Mike. That might suit me as I will almost certainly only manage 26...

I can do about 1:31 around here which puts me about 1:40 down on the leaders over the course of the race but if I average 1:31 I will eat somebody else's hat.

I've checked the loose grid and its ok but the flag is a bit difficult to see.

congratz Podium!!!!
atleas some Cooper there hehe
i had extra frustrated week so no setup experiments for race or even practice at all since last thirday.
did good qual but in start something strange happened.. my framerates droped to some 2-3, cars in front appeard and disapeard and my car also, some flickering black screen.... so somehow i maneged to avoid any collisions and pleased that cars behind me avoided me while i raced dont know where in T1 from deep right line to extra left line and out of grass without understanding what happens. Then i wanted to rejoin race, and thing was, that track looks prity clear, and then from NOWHERE about +/-100meters further from nowhere car by car appeard, so i decided to wait until all cars will pass me by. I also couldnt understand do all cars pass me by or no, cos as i sad, they apeard from nowhere...
so when i entered in Lap1 first hairpin my goal for race was TOP-10.. and somehow i managed to do this from far P19 in lap1.
also this screen frame rate thing appears during race overall 4 times, but most heavy it was during lap 1 and start.
can someone give me addvice what it is?
ps
here was a big storm some 5-4 hours before race, and i hadnt inthernet at all. it appears some 10 min before practise (when i entered igor)
so maybe it is connection?
i dont know.
anyway sorry for this T1 (almoust) incident and once agen thank you all to avoid me, i dont know how it looks from aside.

I was 2nd on the grid.
During the 2nd or 3rd lap, DuFossa spun just infront of me (we were 1 and 2) and I could not avoid the collision.

After waiting that several cars passed, I could do a shift R and then a stop and go (I waited 10 seconds in the pits because I was not sure of the rules)
After that I had a pleasant race from 15th position to 4th.
In the last lap, I spun and lost my 4th position.

2nd on the grid, best lap and a final 5th position, not so bad for my first ever 65 UKGPL races  Wink

Grats to Jonny and Axel !
and of course, thanks to UKGPL organization !

 The Race According to Blito
I havent done ANY GPL since our Monza race of a fortnight ago and so came into this not entirely sure of just how good (or badly) I was going to do. I already have a usable setup for the BRM on this track so just slapped the car full of fuel and trotted round getting the feel of things and as a result was only 16th on the grid.
I'm sure many of you will have seen my chat message before the race warning of the likelihood of carnage at T1.. well, seems I was right and my cautious start was enough to turn p16 into p10 by the end of lap one.. A few laps later and thats p5 and I settled into a good fight with economia which lasted more-or-less the whole race, ending only when his BRM engine let go in spectacular fashion.. In all honesty I was waiting for it to happen as he was clearly using the whole rev-range from his V8 and as I found out in Monza, the BRM engine is NOT indestructable!
All in all, not a great race from me but the end result is a decent haul of points and thats got to help my championship position!

hm, just watched my replay..
replay is in normal framerate. only oquard thing is apearing cars from nowhere when i want to rejoin.
anyway, from aside my racing seems very sick during first meters.... illogical and slow.

Really poor showing from me. I spent most of the day preparing the server and ensuring that there would be no virus scan during the race. Very nervous about how my connection would cope with a full grid. Seemed OK though. I know the track quite well but my driving seems to be going backwards. I certainly did in the race. Made up some places on Laps 1 and 2 and set a PB on Lap 3 then lost a couple of places at the last turn on Lap 4 and had a battle with a couple of cars ahead going down to T3 and it was VERY tight. Made a mistake going into the Esses and about ten cars streamed past. That was that except that Karliss had to go past - wasn't going to fight the championship contender and then suddenly Billy appeared from nowhere. Didn't fight him too hard either. After that it was a case of letting everyone by slowly as the field disappeared.

Getting a bit tired of being unable to be consistent and frankly I don't understand these setups. Coming to T3 sometimes I could brake steadily and sometimes it would just pitch me into the grass. I am sure I am doing something different but I don't know what. Lack of practice and a setup I don't understand doesn't allow me to maximise the little I have. All the drivers that I had regarded as my 'rivals' are just driving the wheels off me.

Maybe I should stick to starting the server - I am getting good at that.

Horrible self-pitying post this but reflects how hacked off I feel about the race.

WD podium and a special shout out to M. Rainier.

The race for me was very quiet, did a steady pace and had no surprise.

But only won because of problems Fossa and Rainier.
