Moderator's Report

A tricky circuit for our Novices with lots of braking zones through corners and elevation changes.

Oh, and a pretty lake to look at too.

Server replay time: 0h01m15s

Fran gets a run on Norm towards Island Bend and the Ferrari power is enough to carry him through.
Norm sees the move develop, and though he does not turn in on Fran, he is clearly centre line driving and does not give Fran room even though he has overlap at turn in.
From Norm's cockpit Fran has disappeared and can only be alongside therefore he should be given room by Norm.
Fran has a much narrower entry than he would have liked and so he fights to stay tight but runs wide and contact is inevitable, though it actually occurs near or on the centre line.
Though this is Lap 1 when drivers are asked to take care, had Fran been given room he would have got the move done cleanly.
As both cars moved from their own side of the track, Norm on apporoach and Fran on exit it is a Contested Side by Side contact: Racing Incident

"In a corner, after a legitimate overtaking attempt the cars end up side by side. Both drivers move over instead of staying on their own side of the track. Contact is made.

Server replay time: 0h01m50s

Axel makes a mistake which allows Sky to make a move on him, but once done Sky wipes Axel's nose and should be careful to give Axel more room or risk taking them both out with contact or warp.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h04m50s

Axel rear ends Sky into Esso Bend.
Axel has followed Sky on the previous lap and Sky had approached Esso at the same speed on those laps.
As the Duckhams sign disappears from his view he is doing 102mph on lap 1, 101mph on lap 2 and 102mph on lap 3 when the impact occurs.
His braking point is the same to within a few feet.
As the Shell sign begins to disappear from his view he is doing 79mph on lap 1, 81mph on lap 2 and 78mph on lap3 when the impact occurs.
It is clearly Axel's responsibility to avoid a collision but he fails to do so as on lap 1 as the shell sign begins to disappear from his cockpit view he is doing 79mph on lap 1, 76mph on lap 2 but 91mph on lap 3 when the impact occurs.
For that reason it can only be a Blatant Rear End Shunt: Penalty 2 Places

As Axel recovers he drives across the racing line in front of Nigel Smith who is impeded as he brakes and turns to avoid him.
As Axel is sitting looking back along the track he can see Nigel on the approach and should sit still until Nigel has cleared him.
Inconsiderate Bad Rejoin: Penalty 1 Places
"The rejoining driver was in full control .... Contact was NOT made but other drivers had to take avoiding action.

  • Cookie (Axel Cookie)penalty — Blatant Rear End Shunt — 2 places lost (plus 1 for penalty points)
  • Cookie (Axel Cookie)penalty — Inconsiderate Bad Rejoin — 1 place lost (plus 1 for penalty points)

Server replay time: 0h06m06s

Sky attempts to take a Stop n Go but misses the pit lane and manages to get stuck on the fence.

He resets and then reverses to enter the pit lane where he takes a Stop n Go as planned, then drives 10 yards and takes another.

Thinking he has got away with it he leaves the pit lane and promptly spins. As this doesn't count as taking 2 Stop n Gos, I would add 30 seconds to his race tijme b ut he retired shortly afterwards so it would make no difference if I did.

However, no driver should reverse along the race track, Sky should have continued around and taken a Stop n Go on the following lap rather than reverse on one of the fastest parts of the race track.

Server replay time: 0h18m33s

Economia loses concentration, hits the trees and rips a wheel of before coming to rest across the track.
Paul is approaching and sees the accident happen before slowing but is unable to avoid Economia.
Economia takes a Stop n Go but misses the pit lane and takes it on track.
He should have continued around and taken it on the following lap.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h31m05s

Blito follows Norm through Island Bend, and as Norm runs wide and lifts he closes quickly before having a look up the inside of Esso Bend.
On first glance Norm appears to turn in and cover the inside as Blito makes his move, but Norm usually takes a narrow entry for some reason though not usually this narrow. His loss of control exiting the previous corner may explain his unusual line.
As Blito has no overlap at turn in, he should yield and Norm is free to take his chosen line having won the corner.

"The victim had partially lost control before contact and consequently his line was unusual. The shunter was in full control."

  • blito (Jason Blito)penalty — Simple Rear End Shunt — 1 place lost (plus 2 for penalty points)

Server replay time: 0h33m00s

NHance is recovering to the track at Cascades as Economia approaches under yellow flags.
Economia slows and spots Norm but seems to lose control perhaps expecting Norm to drive straight on to the track.
Norm sticks to the right hand side away from the racing line and still has 2 wheels on the grass but Economia drifts wide off the line and hits him.
Had Ecopnomia not lost control and strayed wide Norm would have recovered cleanly.
had Norm not been recovering Economia may have kept control and not strayed wide.
This incident is wortth watching just to see from Economia's cockpit as Norm enters low earth orbit upside down.

Thinking he has got away with it once, Norm rejoins again, but this time it is in front of Rob who has to slow to avoid him but is braking anyway for the corner. This was very close to being penalised, and had it been on a straight it would have been.

UKGPL Season 21 65 Novices Trophy
Race 9 Oulton Park

The penultimate race of the season is at Oulton Park situated near the small village of Little Budworth, Cheshire.  This is quite a narrow track with some long straights and difficult braking areas.  Turn 1 (Old Hall) will be busy on lap 1. There isn't a lot of room and anyone hitting the advertising hoardings on the outside will probably bounce back onto the track so please be careful.  The circuit occupies much of the area which was previously the Oulton Estate. The track is set in the grounds of Oulton Hall.

The circuit was originally developed by the Mid-Cheshire Car Club, with the track attracting crowds of 40,000 during the 1950s. Oulton Park regularly hosted the International Gold Cup event which attracted many Formula One teams (Stirling Moss won it 5 times), but as the F1 calendar shrank to include only Grand Prix events, the Cup became less well-known.  The track is characterised by its rapidly changing gradients and blind crests leading into unforgiving corners. Among many British and foreign drivers it is considered one of the most challenging and thrilling circuits ever constructed.

We are without an official Server this week.  I saw no-one on Cookie's Server earlier, so his private session has ended ATM.  This suggests drivers for the race are already good, or might still be bad later! Grin

They keep the mice down....

Cookie. I have a 1 x 1 staggered grid setup and it is OK except that positions, 15, 17, 18 and 19 cannot see the flag. Oddly 16 can just see it. They will catch up into T1 anyway.

As you can see UKGPL3 is back...

I will start the server tonight and there is a nice loose grid. The last few places cannot see the flag but you will catch up into T1 and T2.

Please be careful, especially into T2 as it can easily catch you out.

Paul it would be nice to get the track.ini file for a wide grid, or if you have it, the tool for making it Roll Eyes
Here's a note with links I produced re loose grids;
i) Loose Grids
To avoid (or minimise) the chances of a crash fest at the start of a race we use loose online grids. It is the Divisional Moderators responsibility to ensure a loose grid is in place for their races. Where it is an add-on and/or we are doing a fun race you may have to make one from scratch.
For the common tracks they are already out there (we tend to use Paul Jacksons). I have put my collection (134), and the spreadsheet I use, here; http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VR2TJ35Z See also Mike's download at https://www.ukgpl.com/files/Loose_grids.zip
There are various utilities to help you but I happen to find the GPL Grid maker spreadsheet the best for me.
So to produce a loose grid do this;
1) Take a back-up copy of the default track.ini (in case it all goes pear shaped) (located in Sierra/GPL/tracks)
2) Type the data from the track.ini starting grid info into the GPL Grid Maker excel spreadsheet
3) Select 1x1
4) Play with the spacing
5) Paste/replace the starting grid data into the current track.ini (I change the text to 1x1 Vosblod staggered - just so anyone looking will know)
6) Save the updated track.ini
7) Go into GPL and do a full AI qually/race start on accelerated time
8 ) Once the cars take off escape out and review the grid both in car and overhead from each car - make sure the back guy can see the flag / cars are as spaced as possible / cars not too near the edge
9) Make a note of any errors / changes needed and repeat steps (4) to (8 ) until you get it right.

Sorry Cookie - missed the point  Roll Eyes

Have a look at the track.ini format - it is pretty easy to set any grid you like. The grid positions are basically just offsets from position 1.

Thanks Tim for sorting us out.
