Alas I'm afraid I'm another that can't make it tonight. I've been suffering major computer problems for the last week as my ageing workhorse seems to be on its last legs. All I'm getting is a black screen on my monitor and no beep when I start the PC. I'm hoping I'll be able to sort it by next season. I sure hope the F1 88 series will continue. Many thanks for Goldtop for organising the last two seasons. They've been terrific fun.

Lap 36, in the lead, having a good race for once, and my internet connection decides to drop out.  :'( Hasn't done that all year, and then now? Ah well, and I was starting to enjoy myself too. I hope this won't be the last race with this mod...

.....bad luck LesN, but it meant i got my first race win!

For that last 5 laps i was crossing my fingers hoping my internet connection didnt fail or that i would not get the dreaded screen freeze up for a couple of seconds then unfreeze and you are stuffed into the barriers

Bit of a hollow victory as i was in the fastest car with not much ballast but i am still chuffed as i have lost podiums in the past with the game crashing etc

grats SRW Smiley

unlucky Les, you were flying in practise in the 16s.

This is the last race in the series and the last I'll be organising. Still haven't heard for sure if anyone is taking this on for next season yet. If no-one steps up, I have an idea for continuing Tuesday nights with another mod which won't take up so much admin time for me. Let's see what happens.

still interested in helping with the admin next season... another mod or not... but if we go for another mod it has to be F1 right?  Wink  Smiley  Kiss

First off congrats to SRW for his first win Cool More to come now Grin!!! Also to Jubei for an incredible performance this year and a well deserved Championship. Very sorry to miss this race but I had to be a airport taxi driver this morning to pick up my Mother and between the plane being late and LA traffic I stood no chance to make it Embarrassed. Gotta thank Goldtop for all his work as well Grin. Cheers

Thanks Purdie! Admittedly I had zero ballast and a reasonably quick car, but for the first time it didn't feel like it was always about to spin out from under me.

It would be a shame to give up on this mod, the cars are beautiful, but I can understand if the admin is heavy going. Big thanks to Goldtop for the organisation.

sounds far more glamorous than being stuck on the M25 though!!!! although i'm sure the traffic is worse!

The usual admin of setting the server and posting results etc is no problem. The problem with the F188 mod is that it needs a lot of other admin to set up and run such as assessing driver ability and car strengths and implementing the ballast system. TBH even after all this, I don't think this series was that successful. It hasn't really produced the close racing that I imagined or a close fought championship. I believe We have lost a lot of the initial interest because of this. Therefore all that extra time/effort starts to look a bit pointless.

Another option would be free choice or spec races, but do we really want to see a grid full of McLarens? I think that just destroys the essence of this mod.

My proposal is for a spec open wheel series using this mod...

http://www.nogripracing.com/details.php?filenr=11866

The good points compared to F188...

the cars are all the same but with plenty of skins
the cars drive easily and feel very nice straight out of the box so are very accessible to all
they have better physics and ffb imo
they are harder to crash in that they have very good traction out of slow corners avoiding silly spins
they are better under braking and have rear brake lights to help avoid shunts
they give that bit of a warning before they let go
the offs don't tend to be as race ending and the cars seem to stop better in gravel
they run well on all the tracks I've tried unlike F188 cars
the series would be very admin light....we could use many of our tried and tested existing tracks
they sound great
they are perfect for 40 minute no stop sprint races

The bad points compared to F188...

they don't have the history or charisma
the tyre model seems a bit off...softs will easily last 40 minutes
they might have too much mechanical grip for some tastes
I'm not totally convinced by the wing adjustment effect, but there again, I've run F188 with 1/1 wing on some tracks
top speed is only 160ish mph

I think this mod will deliver close and exciting racing without some of the frustrations of F188 and I'm happy to put some test races together and organise a series if these are successful.

Yeah i agree with all of your points. But I think the balancing did work generally on pace, some races Jubei just couldn't run at the front but he did have 130-odd kgs!!! Consistency and driving standards helps with the balancing and I think I was 50/50 on finishes and DNF's as were many people who are usually rock solid in GT cars.

Other mods are generally a pain to get to this level I understand. My love for the 1988 mod is the historical/nostalgic side... another option is to skin the mclaren so we all have the same chassis but then the racing isn't fun when different cars have different trade-offs etc.

Shame the Group C mod was never polished off. None of the various updates for it make any of them feel like a Group C car IMO. Then we could have had a finale at Le Mans and attracted more GT drivers.

I'll have a browse around whne everyone in the office isn't looking over my shoulder..........  Roll Eyes  Tongue

i guess i'll have to wait till tonight to click that link..(too open at work!)

Hate to say it but does it need to be singleseaters?

Single seaters just dont seem to be popular here for whatever reason. Most people are here because they like racing sportscars, GT cars which do seem to provide close racing. In any of the singleseater races we've run here, in whatever game i've never known any close racing. It has been noticeable at times with this mod that the gtr2 netcode does struggle at the speeds we're doing in these cars which makes it difficult to run anywhere near close to people.

I have grown to like these cars but for me the driving experience is horrible. Was basicly driving with very little ffb last night.

I love GT racing aswell (as long as I can drive a Porsche) but just wanted to offer something different. We have our Sundays for GT, for which we are all looking forward to next season.

You can't argue with the popularity of F188 here (although numbers do seem to be dwindling), so there must be a healthy interest in single seaters and in turn, I believe it has brought some new and returning faces to our GT events. As Andy points out, the attrition rate in F188 isn't good, which can only lead to frustration imo.

The Atlantic Series cars are much more driveable and feely and I firmly believe they'll offer much purer racing, without having to worry so much about keeping them on track or shunting other drivers.

Oh, ok, thats what they are. modern or historic?

I think having the historic appeal clealy appeals to our historic members Wink Formula ford, formula junior even formula 3 i think would have a better balance the F1 cars.

They're the 2005 season cars. They don't have that edgy feel of typical modern formula cars (mods) but have just enough poke to make them exciting.

I was thinking of the full blown Champcar Lola's, but while they're quite easy to drive they are probably not so good for online racing for reasons already mentioned and also they're buggy. The only other mod that came close for me was the F3000 Race07 (or GTR2 conversion), but the Atlantics are far superior imo.
