Moderator's Report

A popular circuit for the Novices, Keimola once again provided a great race with some very close finishes, but who held their nerve to take the title overall?

Karliss looked to be heading for the Championship at one point but a wedding and a Cooper seemed to put pay to that and it was a battle between Axel and JonnyO which went down to the final race and even the final moderation where a penalty could have decided the Championship.

Either one would have been a worthy winner but it was Jonny who took it in the end.

Well done to all for a great season of racing.

Fabio taps Skymole who blocks the track.

Server replay time: 0h04m12s

Karliss gets alongside Norm for the 3rd time in 3 laps at Varikkokaarre but he takes a slightly tighter line than he should and suffers a small warp from Norm on the inside.

Warp Incident

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h18m48s

Du Fossa collects Skymole but the two are out of control at the time in seperate spins despite running closely.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h19m30s

Karliss again tries an overtake at Varikkokaarre only this time he is on the inside of Axel.
Karliss is much later on the brakes than Axel but is under control despite a couple of lock ups and would have made the corner.
Axel takes too tight a line after seiing Karliss disappear from his mirrors so he must be alongside.

Contested Overtake
"The overtaking car had achieved a 50% or greater overlap but not 100% or greater at the point of turn-in and both drivers were in full control."

Server replay time: 0h28m05s

Fabio railrides around EtelaKaarre, but I have only found this to be quicker on the actual track and generally the grass is slower. ;)

UKGPL Season 21 65 Novices Trophy
Race 10 Keimola

A second outing for the Novices at this circuit which is a great combination of twisty sections and a decent long straight. The track was used in the 1960s for Formula 2 races but it never hosted a Formula 1 race. It is a nice track for the 65s and shouldn't be too difficult to learn. The pit exit is a bit unusual in that it isn't near the start line.

The Pole sitter should be aware that they may not be able to see the flag man without looking right (if Mike forgot to change the grid).

Download the circuit here

Grats to the Nov Champ
And a big Thanks to all Nov drivers for some great racing this season.
My race ended with a disco on the start grid  Embarrassed, hope you all had a good one, and see you next season.

I had a disco and screenfreeze in qual but was glad to hold out in the race...
I started from pole and led the first 8 or 9 laps before I got distracted by becoming uncomfortable and spinning the car down to seventh.... I then pulled my way back to 4th, setting FL on the way before passing Norm on the finishing straight on the last lap to pip him to 3rd place by just 0.04s!
Great race chaps, great season too Smiley

Sort of happy and sort of gutted. Happy with the pace I had. Made a bad start found myself in about seventh then worked my way up to lead (well happy as this was only my second ever gpl race). But then a few laps latter my crankshaft let go so was gutted about that.

THanks all for the grat season - this was my best simracing season ever!!!!!
Congratz to our new champion, and its realy deserved, whatever Johny or Cookie.
I realy mised previous race , but thats ok, i didnt plan to be so high in standings and fighting, before season start... (i even lead champ two times lol).

this race had a great start for me... until i colide in fight for P2...
later at the same place i colide again... sorry Cookie,
so stupid mistakes and engine blow at the second race part....
so P6 seems not the worst result.
Conclousions after season from me...
I still can't do all races at consistant level. Seems my nerve system is to weak to hold calm head during race ... something missing... or maybe iam becoming old Smiley

congrats Jason with your first Pole !!!!!

Good practice for this race. We had two nights away spectating at Castle Coombe motorbike races on saturday. Thats a 542mile round trip from home in't' north enabling me to perfect my close running skills on the M42 - When it was moving Grin.
Disappointing turn out of 11 only. There was a lot of good in this race for me. Didn't lose a place off the grid , for once!. Stats show I was ranked No1 for lap consistancy & on track laps. Above all I kept concentration all the way & really battled hard. Unfortunately my slowest lap was lap 27 & Jason's best of the race was lap 28. In those 2 laps he took over a second off me to take it on the line. Actually I didn't know we had finished & I suspect he didn't either as we both kept going full bore for an extra lap. Saw the flags but thought they were for real incidents Roll Eyes .
So well done DR, JO, AND (throught gritted teeth  Wink) Jason.

The season - My 5th full one. Really enjoyed the BT7 & I think I have learned a bit driving it. I now have a fixed chassis set up which seems ok for BT11, BRM, & Honda also. However I was last in the championship of those who did all 10 races so it's not that good. Well done Jonny on the championship. I know its close with Cookie but I suspect its yours. Well done Cookie as well.
Finally - thanks to everyone who took part & particularly to those in UKGPL who make it all possible & to Clutch for keeping me right on the technical stuff. Suggestion for next season Snetterton 67 & Solitude for novice racers please. See you all again in season 22.

Norm H

ps A parrot has just landed outside the window & been sick. Losing 3rd on the line I know how it feels Grin

I wonder if someone could make a "photo-finish" picture of us crossing the line, you know, like they do in horse racing.... would be nice to see in terms of meters just how close that 0.04s actually is..

This season has been a mixed bag for me. The BRM is a lovely car to drive but it has some odd characteristics that make it a challenge to keep at the front. People think the BRM is some kind of rocket but I've found that it laks straight line speed compared to the V12s.. There is power there for sure but it comes at the very top of the rev range and to exploit it is to overheat the lump.. the one race where I did try to keep it there was Monza and my V8 went in spectacular fashion, dumping oil and shrapnel all over Karliss in the process! By seasons end I had found out how to exploit that power, using it almost like a turbo-boost on a 80s F1 car... changing gear at 11k most of the time to look after the car but holding to 12k when I need the boost!
There have been incidents, accidents, spills and thrills , but best of all there has been 10 great races with a bunch of fantastic guys! I'm already looking forward to next season, but do I stick with the Beast of Bourne or move on to Mr Chapmans finest?
Congrats to everyone who deserves it, and commiserations to Parrot-boy for losing a podium by the skin of his beak! Cheesy

To capture that magical photofinish, you could use GPL Carcam, to adjust a camera angle, until it has the desired effect.  Then hit Print Screen, to preserve the drama for posterity. Cool

It was a very difficult victory for me ! The Ferrari is not easy to drive compared to the Lotus 33.
During qualifications, I was completely out and was happy with position 8 on the grid.

The first laps of race were even worst, I was not able to overtake Cookie and his little Cooper and spun 2 times.
But other drivers made more mistake than me and my victory was some kind of miracle Smiley

Congratulations Jonny for the championship, grats to Cookie too and to the 3rd (forget his name  Huh) !
I hope to see you next season ...in the "PRO" championship !!??
what will you do ? stays with Novice or race with the Pro ?
