SEASON 44  -  1967 F2    AMATEURS         Round 7  -  Snetterton

The first circuit made use of the perimeter roads and one of the runways to create a fast 2.71 mile circuit. A signature feature was the almost mile-long Norwich Straight, which ran parallel to the A11 road and culminated in a tight hairpin bend. The course outline was marked by sand-filled oil drums, topped rather eccentrically by Christmas trees. The early meetings featured rather primitive facilities and entry to the circuit infield could only be achieved during breaks in track running, due to there being no bridges or underpasses.By 1965, the first changes were made to the circuit. Speeds out of the final Paddock Corner were becoming a concern and a chicane was inserted, named after Jim Russell, who had established the world's first racing driver school at the circuit in the late 1950s. Unfortunately, the new corner was far too tight and motorcycle racers in particular found it almost impossible to negotiate, so it was eased in 1967. The revised corner was much quicker; a flat-out-if-you-dare kind of affair, which saw you hit the pit lane wall if you got it wrong – and many did...Elsewhere on the circuit, a former gunnery mound alongside the pit straight was excavated and used to form the approach banks of a new vehicle bridge across the track at the Esses, and there was a general improvement over the years in facilities.Snetterton remained a temple to high speed during the 1960s and early 70s and despite this, remained relatively safe for the times. One of the major factors in this was the lack of much to hit – grassy fields surrounded much of the circuit, while other areas featured escape roads formed by the old runways.

This race was always going to be problematic for me. I did a few laps in practice about two weeks ago, then was asked to take a friend home from the hospital post-surgery this afternoon. I never imagined I'd be able to return home in time for the race after the taxi service, but to my surprise I came through the front door with just five minutes left to go in qualifying. I had no actual setup, so I massaged a couple of things on the default, guessed at what might be a full tank, managed to complete one lap, and decided to start from the pits so as not to be an obvious danger to anyone else. I was lapped three times by nearly the entire field, so I won't be counting this as one of my finest hours. That's too bad, because I've always loved this track. At least I set a new personal record in one category: From the moment I bought the sim in the fall of 1998, I have never been this unprepared for a GPL race.

Congrats Eric, good pole time & for the win.

Danny - that was quite the debut!

Was hoping to have kept a little closer to use the tow, but a couple of excursions dropped me back.  I guess it wouldn't be a proper race at Snetterton without some last corner drama Smiley

I was then just struggling. GPLRA report indicates no damage,  but it didn't feel quite right somehow.
My fastest lap was on lap2,  which about sums it up.

Was lucky to have held 3rd place.  David R clearly had some issue which allowed me to take the place,  but I thought I'd see him later wanting his place back!

Cheers all.
Dave.

Cheers Dave

Very enjoyable first race. Definitely learnt some things tonight.

Was under strict instructions from my old man not to take anybody out, so goal archived haha.

Look forward to the next race!!

Cheers all

Hi Fran, yes Dan is my son. He isn't a kid, he's 29, I've been trying to get him into GPL for 10 years and he's finally had a go. A decent showing for a first race, I'm pleased he didn't have any incidents and made a few clean overtakes.

Welcome, Danny and congratulations on a podium finish. Believe me, at 29, you're still a kid in GPL terms. Great to see a new driver on the grid.

Looks like we will both be looking for a tow Dave..... I can't remember what times I was doing here, or in what car
but Danny looks annoyingly fast  Roll Eyes

I haven't figured out this next Italian town, seems very messy to me so far. braking and turn in points are a guess
Stardust I can do, and the Glen is one of my all time faves, so I have that to look forward to.

Yes, I try to mix it up as much as possible when selecting tracks for the season. You wait until you see my crazy idea for Season 45 Smiley
