I am in the middle of an office move at work at the moment, so I didn’t get any chance to do any practice for Mexico, and I really was expecting the worst. At the start of qualifying I was quite slow, and then the server crashed. Getting back to qualifying I some how managed a decent lap, which was over a second better than my pervious PB. I was really happy with that and was surprised to be 3rd on the grid.
At the start I took it easy, my team mate was right in front of me going into turn 1, so I backed off a little and promptly lost a place to Rotaxmax. I managed to stay with Rotaxmax but couldn’t find a way past, that Honda sure is quick on the straights. After a number of laps, Rotaxmax made a small mistake which let me past, but now he was right on my tail. I was constantly in fear of that Honda on the straights, as if he got close I would have been a sitting duck. Luckily I was slightly faster in the twisty bits and managed to get a little breathing room before the straight.
Somehow I managed to pull a little gap, but it was really hard work keeping my concentration up as any little mistake cause more pressure from behind. I had a moment when lapping someone who spun going into the hairpin, I couldn’t miss them and crashed right into the side of them. I managed to get going again fairly quickly, it cost be about 5 seconds, but it meant that Rotaxmax was right on my tail again, this time I couldn’t pull away in the twisty bits and he overtook me. I tried to stay with him, and put some pressure on him this time. I was doing OK, but started to push too hard. Going into turn 1 he made a little mistake and ran wide, I obviously got target fixation as I ran wide too. It turned out worse for me as it caused me to spin, letting Il_Lupo past too. With only 3 laps to go it was over for me, I tried to put some pressure on but I was too far behind with too few laps left.
I ended up finishing 6th, which considering I hadn’t done any practice I am quite pleased. However just after the race I was a little bit gutted, spending most of the race in 4th, driving my heart out only to lost not only 4th but 5th too all due to a accident when lapping a car, was a little disappointing.
Not sure if I’ll be able to make the next race, it depends if everything goes smoothly with the move. Hope to be there as these BT11’s are fun to drive. Talking about BT11’s looking at the results it was almost a specs race at Mexico
Congrats to Hendy, great win with great pace here, and ofcourse Norm and Rog, Well done guys.
