My monitor has just gone tits up.
I'm looking at these flat screen jobbies and would be interested to know if it's necessary to go for a 2ms response time for GPL or would 5ms be good enough?
Anything else I should look at?

5ms Should be good enough, but a screen has much more important properties. I have a 22" widescreen Samsung 226CW screen and it's brilliant. Don't just look at the responetime, but also the colours, blacklightbleed etc . Read, read, read and read reviews .

Many thanks. A Samsung is arriving tomorrow but I went for the 20" version.

Good call. BTW Samsung make the flat panels for a lot of other "manufacturers" too.

Mine's a 19" BenQ (love capital Q's at the end of names ) FP91G+ and it's just about to turn 2 years old. It's old hat now, but has been great with no problems, and it only had a 8ms responce time, so I don't think being obsessed with it is a problem. Samsung are usually quite gd, shud be fine

The Samsung is up and running.
It does have one duff pixel that is permanently green. Shows up like a blind cobbler's thumb on a black background but you can't see it on white.
Has no effect on GPL whatsoever.
It is about a quarter of the way up the screen and about a third of the way across from the left. Is this sort of thing usual or should I return it?

Every LCD screen I've ever owned came with a warning that a few of the pixels may be duff - either permanently on or off - and that this is not a fault. In other words, they probably will not replace the monitor for one duff pixel.

The higher-end professional monitors come with a zero dark/bright pixel guarantee, but more modestly priced stuff usually only guarantees a certain maximum number of bad pixels. My high end photo editing panel has none at all; luckily my two Samsung 17" widescreen panels don't have any either, even though they were cheap. My old NEC 17" panel has a pink line running down it which I disguise by putting the edge of WinAMP down it.

Try rubbing that pixel with a very soft piece of cloth. For me it often "wakes" the pixel up. Apply gentle pressure on it with that cloth.

You can always return it for a full refund, you get 14 days I believe (depends if you baught it online or in a shop) even if there's nothing wrong with it atall. If it bothers you then return it, I think I would if it happened to me.

It is going back to ebuyer on Monday and once they have confirmed that there is a duff pixel they will send me a replacement.
Apart from the pixel the monitor is brilliant, its just that no matter what is on the screen all I am doing is looking to see if I can spot the duff pixel. Sad I know.
Many thanks to all.
Clive
EDIT Just to let you know that ebuyer replaced the monitor and the replacement has no fault that I can spot. I did think that it was a bit naff on text until someone pointed out that I needed to set it to its native resolution.
