I had a bit of rant in the Mosport race thread because the Windows Update meant that I could not use my PC for over an hour on Sunday so I was not able to start the server for the Works race or join the Privateers race. It gets worse. The update has really messed up GPL. I had to reinstall the software for my wheel (that works OK) but I have lost Pribluda & the mirrors don't work. There is a thread on SRMZ about this - http://srmz.net/index.php?s=96b80af14949293084f12dec740d2bb1&showtopic=11487&st=15A fix would be very gratefully received. My loathing for Microsoft has reached new levels.

My W10 install dates from early this year and initially, it wasn't a big deal to get GPL and other older programmes to function as before. Lately, tho, updates have buggered up things something awful and I'm really disappointed. There are times when W10 just chokes. Here's a for instance... I can boot-up, open a number of programmes including GPL and GPLRA, close all of them off to a clean desktop, open File Manager(aka, Windows Explorer)and then try to open Notepad. Nope. W10 just throws its hands up in the air in utter defeat and walks away. I need to restart to get functions back. Bit of a joke and a bad one at that. Can't wait til the release of W10_E_F. W10_Epic_Fail.

For info. if Windows 10 has messed up Pribluda there is an old programme called Digital Dashboard Modifier which gives roughly the same info as Pribluda at the bottom of the screen. You don't get the car positions at the top of the screen. Whilst I was getting used to driving with no telemetry info (lots of gear change counting) I am now using DDM. It does not seem to work in conjunction with Lee's "No Letterbox" patch, but it does give you an option. Many thanks to Ginetto for uploading - see this thread in SRMZ - http://srmz.net/index.php?s=b59d9f0a212e26bfb99546e653b2d4c9&showtopic=11487&st=30Donny - there is a Compatibility function for programmes that did work in older versions of Windows. See the same thread in SRMZ.

well this is weird. If I use gpl.exe I get pribluda, if I use GEM or gplc67.exe etc pribluda doesn't work!

I find all this talk of the problems with Win10 regarding pribluda/sound/mirrors etc VERY disturbing !!!
I have been running my old Dell desktop with WIN XP for 10+ years and it is ( mostly) rock solid. OK, the 2gb Ram and the overcrowded hard disk are creaking, but at least I am able to run GPL and enjoy the racing. I have upgraded the sound, graphics and Power supply over the years, but the motherboard and processor are original 2.1 ghz dual core Dell spec.
The problem is that I also dabble in GTL and being a more recent piece of software it is capable of much higher graphic output and can use more RAM...if it is available.
So, I have been seriously contemplating treating myself to a new PC, with some heavy specs ( maybe even triple monitors!!) and these inevitably come with Win10 installed. I do have a full Win 7 Pro disk, so I could get a blank PC and stick Win 7 on as the OS. But that seems kind of pointless as Win 7 is as obsolete as XP ??!!
As someone who struggles with the simplest of computer related issues, the thought of wrestling with a non-user friendly Win 10 that is actively preventing me from enjoying GPL, fills me with a cold dread. I am following the various threads in the hope that someone finds the magic bullet for these issues,
I

"Microsoft won't end security updates for your Windows 7 PC until Jan. 14, 2020." So a long time to think about what's after...
W7 will be the last MS OS that can be managed and modified by its owner, you! You are able to remove or disable all parts you do not like! Like MS spyware and MS keylogger...
For a new PC there is also the possibility of a dual boot of W7 and any Linux OS. GPL runs fine under linux/wine now with full support of wheels and FFB.
IMO the user has to learn the same different handling of a new OS, if he switches from W7 to W10 as to a modern Linux!
And Linux is save!

So, I might try a dual boot ( if I can work out how to do that!) and stick Win 7 and Linux on a new PC. if I install Linux as the OS, then install Wine ( this will allow me to run Windows based software like GPL) I can avoid the Win 10 problems??
I am currently trying a fresh install of GPL on my laptop which is running win 10( and ironically has a higher spec processor and 4gb ram to play with ), just to see what the issues are So far I have the 67's and 65's loaded and they appear to work OK. About to try Pribluda........which is where it might all go wrong lol!!

I am very tempted to try Linux again. I did dabble with it some years ago with Ubuntu. I see you use Mint, cookie.
Is it as simple as it now appears to get everything up and running though. I don't mind adjusting settings but don't want to be tweeking for weeks just to get it to work.
Is there an up to date guide anywhere of how to get GPL installed with Linux / Wine?

Steve I did some guiding to Linux GPL at SRMZ in different threads.
The first thing to think about is the graphic card wich is used. To have the best possible fps you must use OpenGL raterizers. The build in open source GPU drivers do not support gaming with OpenGL!
So you need proprietary GPU drivers:
- NVidia keeps their proprietary drivers up to date so you can use the latest linux kernel in all distros. - AMD did break their continuity, they do support only pretty new GPU's with theit latest drivers, so with a Radeon HD 7970 you must use an older linux kernel.
To install Linux besides W7, you just have to install W7 first, then the install of linux will detect it and can be set up besides with a choice at the boot.

I'm installing mint now alongside windows 10.
I have an nvidia card so OpenGL shouldn't be an issue.
I'm sure I'll have more questions as I progress with the install

Just ask Afaik you must shut off W10 ~ "secure boot" if you want to keep it besides mint. W10 takes over more than just the HDD of your PC, it modifies the bios too! I am not a specialist for W10! I installed it and tested it for 2 weeks before I kicked it. After the mint install go to : https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/mint-cinnamon-firstand follow the steps, so you will learn a lot just doing it.

ok thanks.
I've just found out about the secure boot issue, and now straight in to another. Now I get a screen that shows a grub command prompt! I'll have to come back to that a bit later.
Anyway, as suspected the installation is not straight forward.
A warning to others: if you are not comfortable changing and experimenting with stuff I'd suggest not attempting this.
