Season 40 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 2 – Privateers - Zeltweg
This race announcement is for the PRIVATEERS.
The second race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at Zeltweg Austria. Zeltweg - the original Österreichring. Built in 1969 to replace the bland and bumpy Zeltweg Airfield circuit, the track was known for being very fast, as every corner was a fast sweeper and taken in no lower than 3rd gear in a 5-speed gearbox and 4th in a 6-speed gearbox. There are also noticeable changes in elevation during the course of a lap which means the downhill sections are even faster. Like most fast circuits it was a hard circuit on engines and even harder on tyres simply because the speeds were so consistently high.

I spent most of the race being blocked by a wildly driven Ferrari weaving all over the place

I certainly saw the black smoke! I eased off a bit after that to reduce the chance of a similar fate. So 1/2 the Maserati entrants with engine issues. Unluck David & Fran. All the Works Maseratis lasted the distance. Coincidence? I don't think so It was fairly close running for most of the race; but was good to still be able to see the leaders much of the rance. I like this track! Cheers all. Dave.

Effectively ,the first thought was to have abused the engine brake into the Bosch curve. One curiosity, happen also to other to enter in full screen without the usual keys of GPL obsrving other car during the qualy or without number and time of laps during the race?

I don't think so There was only one Work Maserati But, clearly the engine issue was my mistake because I was pushing very hard in the last lap ...to put pressure on you for the gain of the 3rd position.

I have looked at Fran's replay and on one of his faster laps the revs spiked up to 8k on seven occasions in the lap. I think it is something to do with GPLShift. The green line shows that Fran is driving to a 7500rpm limit but the number of times that the revs go above the black line, during upshifts, show the amount of damage that is happening on the up-shifts. This is similar the effect that you get when quickshifting, that is, not taking your foot off the accelerator pedal when changing up.

Thank you for the analysis Clive,i was convinced that was the downshift at Bosch curve because i have used the engine brake at high rpm. The explosion happened in this point.

You are welcome. The downshift at Bosch may not have helped. All the little bits of engine damage are added together until the sum total says that the engine is dead. As we have discussed, this level is variable and random. I know nothing about GPLShift or Fairshift but it looks to me as though one of those programmes is giving the throttle a blip as it passes through neutral between gears.

I use fairshift. One problem could be that the clutch, after the start, don't work with the superior gears. I can change gear also without clutch.

Hi Fran I have 3 pedals but never have use clutch as I only have 2 feet . I just use the brake and gas pedals , just ease the gas when downshifting and upshifts . Maybe not the quickest way but at least I get to finish races ( Well most times ) Hope you can get sorted B.T.W. They say the first 25 years of GPL are the worst
