Season 44 - 1955GP (Privateers) - Round 6 – Roy Hesketh
The sixth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to the Roy Hesketh circuit in South Africa. Located on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, the circuit was named after a South African racing driver, the late Roy Hesketh who died in in an aircraft collision 1944. Doug Aldridge, Colin Dove, Ossie Fisher, George Finch and George Shrives got together as a Consortium from Pietermaritzburg in the early nineteen fifties to first build and then maintain and improve the circuit.

During its period of operation (1953-1981) the circuit hosted rounds of the South African National Drivers Championship, and national Formula Atlantic races. The South African National Drivers Championship was a Formula One motor racing championship which generally fielded cars recently retired from the world championship although there was also a healthy selection of locally built or modified machines, and from the late 60s Formula 5000 was added to grids with Formula Two cars joining in 1973.

The circuit also hosted the Easter races - a festival of motorcycle racing over three days. Mike Hailwood, Giacomo Agostini, Barry Sheene, Kork Ballington, Jim Redman, Paddy Driver, Mick Grant, Rod Gray and Syd Stacy were regular competitors at the circuit.

Another track I have never seen before  Roll Eyes

Have run some laps with a few cars, and thought I was starting to get the hang of it.

So I looked at the times from the last time you ran here with these cars...
And I am ~5 secs off the best time from then  Shocked I need more practice  Cheesy

It is a short track so the smaller cars are quite competitive. If you have spent tokens on a fast car for the fast circuits, you have an opportunity to keep the spending under control here. It is easy to get caught out by the slipstream under braking so I suggest you leave 3 car lengths between yourself and the car ahead if you are not planning to overtake.

There are no heavy braking zones here so if you can practice lapping without using the brakes, in the race you will be able to keep a full set of green brakes in reserve for when you want to try to make a pass.

It was a popular track in the 60s, if you follow the link in the race announcement you will find lots of interesting photos and videos on the track website.

Phil, you have to explain this to me.For me is one of the track more difficult for the brake, after 3 laps are red.

LOL all I was trying to say is if you can preserve your brakes  whilst the guy ahead is using his you can get past here. If your brakes are constantly in the red, overtaking will be difficult. It looks like Fran will be vulnerable from lap 4 onwards Shocked

The best time to pass is when the other bloke is on the grass!

I find that you have to stand it on its nose at the end of the first straight and then try to do the rest of the lap with minimal brakes.

As with most tracks, I can only go as fast as my brakes allow. Sad

So, I have a weird one. If I join UKGPL13 (my server) then all my 55 RHesketh setups are there
If I join UKGPL02, or a local run of GEM, non of my 55 RHesketh setups are there.
I have been careful to use my 55 player, as that has caught me out in the past.

If I use other mods everything (as far I have checked ) is as it should be
If I look in Sierra\GPL\players\Rowe55_Matt\   all the setups are there

It looks a bit weird as it puts "_Matt" on all my player names

ANy thoughts? I can spend time doing a couple of car setups again, but I don't understand why
all setups are in the right directory, but are not visible with server 02 or local....

So, something is wrong. I haven't recalibrated my wheel asince last using it, but I am now
2.5 secs faster today, and the brakes are going red where they weren't before
so I must be faster on the straights.

Double, double check that you do not have Novice trainer or Advanced trainer still selected.

Grats on P2 Matt. You were quick enough to qualify in P4 in the Works race; ahead of me in the same car  thumbup1

You'll be works material before long if you keep this up Grin

Noooooooooo  Shocked
Pergatory  Grin

I am getting better at these, much to CLive L's frustration  Roll Eyes
I can't do the slidey slidey to his standard yet.

I made a decent start, Bully made a better one, but was careful to not take a risk on Lap1
Moises went off in the last turn Lap 1, which promoted me to 2nd.
Chris was close for the 1st few laps, then I pulled ahead a bit. Eventually Moises
recovered past Chris, and was quite a way back, then I went off myself, and he was now
5 secs or so behind.... Shocked but he went grass tracking again, and I stayed in front to the finish

Ricardo was up the road, doing 19s straight away, so I am very happy with 2nd place  thumbup1

I enjoyed this one more than most of these 55 events. I liked IMS as brakes were not required
and here it was relatively easy to judge the brakes
