Moderator's Report

Another race with no reported incidents!! are you guys trying to make me redundant?? Keep up the good work.

In order that I can justify my immense salary as a moderator I did however watch through the race ( on fast forward 16x, for each driver) just in case there were any points that needed to be looked at.

There were several "Racing incidents" where momentary loss of control by a driver caused some exchanges of paint samples and, in one or two cases, some trips into the undergrowth, but generally there was good conduct throughout the race.

Just one point with no names.
If you are about to be lapped by a faster car it is probably best if you don't try and match his pace and attempt to stay ahead until the next straight. There was at least one, possibly 2 or 3 incidents, where a car about to be lapped lost control directly in front of one of the leading cars. As a result the faster car had to take evasive action and lost valuable time.
I know it is not easy and it constantly interrupts the race for the cars being lapped, but trying to match the pace of the car aboout to lap you is not really a good idea and will surely compromise your race and his if you go off and take the faster guy with you.

Just a note to Tim (FMG), I think your stopwatch needs a new battery! By my reckoning, and the replay timer in GPL, your pitstop was about 13-14 secs. Very noble of you to be so careful but those 3 secs might have cost you a higher position at the end of the race?

Hmm. We started a Pink team because Sky had no team... now you tell me he is grey. This is getting very complicated. One for Clive I think.

Well Geoff left us for a better offer Wink and Steve is temporarily MIA. Not sure of the position but guessing the Grey reserves need to be filled before we then fall back on the Pinks as second reserve?

That was such an exhausting race for me, I was almost completely drained at the end, not the least because of the very hot weather here, even if it was past 11 PM already...

I generally do very well at Adelaide and having raced the 2F and Porsche in the past, setting times in the 1:30-1:31 range, I expected that I could bring the Mirage within a small margin to those times. How wrong I turned out to be though!!!

The car was handling awfully, both in corners, where it would snap around without any warning, and when running over curbs, where it would pogo too much, scraping the ground, going sideways and what not. I thought it's probably too soft and low, so I stiffened it up, especially bump and rebounds, and also raised the suspension, but to no avail. It improved a bit, but there were still places where, if I didn't go through exactly the same speed, line and angle on each lap, it would cause me lots of grief and I had to turn the steering like a madman to catch the car, as well as do a lot of pedals work to balance to constantly changing weight distribution. For the moment, I obviously suck at setting up some of these cars or maybe I was simply over-driving the Mirage in my attempt to compensate for its lack of grip.  Roll Eyes

At one point during Qualifying I had Evil right behind and he was putting up a lot of pressure, so that helped me focus better and with the aid of some minor slipstream from other cars in front, who luckily got out of the way, I managed to set my pole time. Juha apparently set an identical one, at least down to the hundred of a second, but second is what he got, so I led off on our rolling lap.

I made some changes to the setup just before the start, so it was a bit of a gamble, but it didn't really make much of a difference and after going cautiously on the first lap to get a feeling for the heavier chassis and to let the mechanical and rubber parts warm up, it started behaving as bad as in Qualifying once I pushed it harder. And I really had to, because it was obvious I was holding up Juha, but he couldn't really find a way to get past as I was always getting the better exits in the place that matter, particularly the corner leading on the backstraight. I could also brake a little later for the hairpin, so for a while it looked like I might be able to hold Juha up, as long as I didn't make big mistakes.

He was very aggressive though and I had to keep looking at my mirrors to make sure he has not dived on the inside, because he constantly made false attacks by going to the side and then braking slightly later, especially in T1 and the 90 degree corners. With him in my blind spot, I had no option but to go a bit wider and then that compromised both of us on the exit, allowing Evil to catch up. I was getting a bit frustrated after a couple of laps going like this, and after another such false attack by Juha as we entered T1, I lost control and hit the wall on the exit, which then sent me back to the left side of the track and it led to a collision between myself and Juha.

I was the first one to recover and continued in the lead, and I couldn't really tell if the car was damaged or not, but the handling neither seemed to improve nor get worse.  Cheesy It was now Evil's turn to put pressure and if I thought Juha was quick, I wasn't really prepared for the speed difference of the Porsche vs. my Mirage in the corners. After a few laps of blatantly holding up Evil, I decided to just let him go through and try to keep up with him using the slipstream, and hopefully be able to improve my pace and make an attack near the end. Evil misinterpreted my going off the line and we both lifted up together, lol, but then I ran wide at the hairpin and he was through. He began to pull away a little bit, but at least I had no one to trouble me now and could just concentrate on finding a way to drive the car more efficiently.

That never came to be as I lost the car soon after and dropped a couple of seconds back, with Juha now having gone up to 2nd. Surprisingly and perhaps having gotten used a bit to the weird handling of the Mirage, I managed to reel him in, though slowly, and we had a very good chase for a few laps. Within those few laps, Evil seemed to disappear from the lead and what was a battle for 2nd suddenly became a battle for 1st! I eventually made a bit of a risky dive in the braking zone for the hairpin, but just managed to slow on time to keep my car on the inside and complete the move - back into the lead now!

Once I was in front, Juha somehow found his speed again, or maybe it was down to slipstream, but the intense pressure from the opening laps was to be experienced again, with Evil (again) closing up on both of us after apparently having returned to our dimension. Fortunately for me and unfortunately for Juha, he made a mistake after a few laps and was flipped over by Evil who couldn't avoid him, so I gained a couple of seconds lead as Evil must've managed to continue without any big delay.

By the time the fuel load went down and after trying to decipher the car for the whole race, I managed to speed up a little and do some consistent quick laps, which was enough to maintain the gap to Evil and then even increase it once he dropped back again because of his issues. The fastest lap right on the last one was probably more telling of what potential the Mirage has, if set up properly, but there was no way I could do those sorts of times consistently. I also just had Fulvio in sight and tried to lap him, but he just escaped into his last lap as I took the chequered flag!  Grin

Grats to Team Red for the 1-2! And commiserations to Juha after his very strong drive.

OK Tim - I'll change that.

Please note that Team Red only deal in ones and twos which is why to complement the boys 1-2 finish I hovered around twelth (12) and finished eleventh (11)  Grin

Terrible race for me. Couldn't set up the Mirage properly and had more spins and red-faced moments than I care to remember. Had a nice battle with Jason for most of the race that sadly turned sour with a couple of laps to go. That coming together demoted me from 4th to 7th and I couldn't find a way past Phil on the final lap. Some terrific defending there Phil.

Well done to H for managing to tame that flaming Mirage. Congrats to Clive and Fulvio for making the podium as well. It can only get better at the next race!

Correct, all except the part about leaving for a better offer. What, ...leave? and miss out on all the team perks. Like palfreys from the Ceremonial Gundy, and virtual beer, as much as you can drink.......virtually..Smiley Now, what's the better offer?
I brokered the deal in chat with Juha and Sky, then PM'd the outcome immediately.....too Tim I think. Should have CC'd one to Evil and Paul too I guess, sorry gents. For the very reason that the Grey Team ranks should be filled before the Pink team gets a run.

You did PM me Geoff and I am inclined to allow Sky to race in the Grey Team for the very reason that you have said.

The Grey Team is the overflow to cope with the part timers and the Pink Team was added to cover any sudden influx of part timers above the 3 in the Grey Team.

But, I need to liaise with Paul and look at how this screws up the points allocation table Undecided if drivers swap teams like this.

No need - I will sort that out - adds a bit of work on the grid but I will amalgamate records where necessary. So Sky(grey) will amalgamate with Geoff for Grey and Natan will amalgamate with... somebody!

Feeling very despondent after another awful performance.  Took the Ford Mk2 which tends to feel like it has a multiple cracked chassis and reminds me of a kart I once drove with exactly that, which would flex and buck and make you look like a right charlie as you'd randomly veer off the circuit!

I deluded myself that I had it tamed in off-line practice though when prib showed I had potential for 1:36's and the bucking seemed to abate after I tried some radically soft settings.  Only just managed to get into 1:38's for qually though with the car back to feeling as awful as ever.

At the start of the formation lap I was rammed by someone, Al maybe?  who went on to cause some more confusion up the road before he obviously remembered it was a rolling start and sheepishly dropped back!  Smiley Started quite soon to drop off the top 9 but made some distance behind me but then l I went wide at the start of the straight to let my team mate Tim through after an off, only to hit the angled bales!  It then did not get better for some time until the last few laps when I realised that Al had taken advantage of my incompetence and closed right up.  Being in a bad mood I was even more determined that I would not lose another place and we had some great racing for a few laps until his slight mistake gave me enough breathing space to finish ahead.

Apart from those last few laps I have to say that it was one of the least enjoyable races I've been in.  So far off the pace, the car felt so unpredictable, PC became very stuttery and to be honest the only thing that made me continue was the team aspect.  Not sure I'll do another season in GT's unless I discover some revelation that enables me to drive them to something resembling competence!

Congratulations to H and podium and of course to Tim for a good recovery for 4th.

Not guilty (for a change) I think Paul, just above, said he shot off at the start.

PC became very stuttery and to be honest the only thing that made me continue was the team aspect.

Agreed to both of these points too, not sure why it became so stuttery on my PC, but it was an annoying problem that came and went at serval points during the race.

Sorry about that Sam, I just was way too late on the brakes and had to aim the car at the bit of track where you wasn't... Anything else would have been a disaster! As it was I almost made it round but struck the bales on the exit and bounced into you.... Again, I can only apologise for my silly mistake!
