Moderator's Report

Congratulations to Will for a deserved win. Despite my efforts at balance there were several Hondas in the race, one Ferrari and no BRM's! There wasn't even enough fuel for all the Hondas, and Paul Bird was the one who lost out... Hopefully we should have the BRMs back next race but with all the Ferraris in the Novices there might be room for one more in the Amateurs... Thanks to Clive for again providing the server, unfortunately we have not yet managed to get UKGPL1 working on Igor.

The race was started off a tight grid, which led to a few problems that might not otherwise have occurred.

Server replay time: 0

Start

The side-to-side contact between Nicky and S.Cloud is warp, though Nicky may have been moving inside too early in the race. I'm not going to penalise this, because of the tight grid and because it only affected Nicky, since he was thrown over the armco out of everyone's way.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h00m58s

L1 Esses

Geoff clips John Roberts right rear as he turns in. Geoff turns in too early- he can see that there are cars two abreast just ahead of him, with the outside car forced to stay wide.

I've waived the additional 1 place Lap 1 penalty and the yellow card points because of the tight grid.

John performed an sng for his reset, though it wasn't necesssary as he wasn't at fault. However the sng wasn't carried out 'according to Loynes', as you have to be closer to the pit wall, as Clive kindly explained to me in my first UKGPL race.

Server replay time: 0h01m03s

L1 Esses

S.Cutter loses control on the kerb and is rear-ended by P.Maestro, who has to reset, but doesn't need a sng for this. Racing incident.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h25m17s

L20 90

S.Cutter loses control in the 90 and slews sideways, there seems to be a gap which N.Ickx goes for, leading to side-to-side contact as S.Cutter regains grip. Both cars suffer minor damage.

  • Racing incident

Server replay time: 0h28m05s

L23 Back straight

FullMetalGasket attempts a very ambitious pass between P.Bird and C.Loynes at the end of the back straight, and makes contact with Clive's left rear, sending him off. Clive is left upside down on the racing line and is hit by J.Roberts, who has failed to slow under yellows, and so correctly takes an sng for the needed reset.

Server replay time: 0h31m49s

L27 Turn 1

Burt makes a slight error at the 90 allowing S.Cloud to get alongside before T1, but then turns as if S.Cloud wasn't there, and the side-to-side contact sends Burt into the armco. The contact was Burt's fault but I'm not going to penalise it, as there was no damage or hindrance to S.Cloud.

Bernie is following and finds Burt right on the racing line at low speed. He tries the inside where there is no space, the contact sends him into the armco. There wasn't much Burt could have done about this, as his car had simply spun onto the line and any attempt to move off it would have just taken up more of the track. Bernie had little time to choose and almost squeezed past.

UKGPL Season 16 - Novices and Amateurs - Race 2 - 65 mod - Watkins Glen

This will be the second championship race in the Novices and Amateurs Division, which uses the 65 mod.  Watkins is a short and fast track- to avoid problems, for this race the Novices and Amateurs will run on separate grids, see the grid lists below.  The Amateurs, as the bigger grid, will run on 3ukgpl.

Please be in IGOR UKGPL chatroom by 8:40 p.m.
(You will need to set up a channel called #ukgpl if you haven't already done so)
IGOR and Race passwords: see above

Server 3.ukgpl (and another server, to be assigned)
IP address  87.194.135.42

Race date = 23-09-2008
Track = Watkins Glen
Variant = 65F1
Damage Model = INT
Qually time = 30 minutes.
Race length = long (33 laps)

Make sure that you have enough race fuel to complete the distance!

Password: see above
(2) Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page

Moderation:  I'm hoping to be able to moderate the whole race, thanks to Bully I should have access to the server replay.  However only incidents that are reported are certain to be looked at.  Please can all drivers be very careful at the start of the race, many of the circuits are awkward at the beginning and Watkins Glen is no exception.  The first turn is tight, and the armco on the esses tends to create multi-car pileups, allow extra room for warp on the first lap.  Don't go off the Loop on cold tyres, as you'll kick yourself.

Penalties are to be worried about after the race, with the exception of penalties for restarts.  The UKGPL rule is that you have to take a stop-and-go in the pits for each reset at the end of the lap, with the only exception being if your reset was caused by another driver.  The penalty for not taking a stop-and-go is thirty seconds.   Novice drivers will be on their own grid for this race, so any reset will have a thirty-second penalty unless another driver has collided with your car, or you carry out a stop-and-go.

Chassis assignments: Once you've begun to drive a car in the championship then you should continue with that car, there's no switching cars by track.

Novices Grid
norbert, LondonRC, happyAl, G Poole, vosblod, Asbjeurn Tverberg, b_1_rd, Samb, dtown14, kiwi, karlisss- other novices who haven't yet registered should contact me before the start, if you were unable to race at Mosport, please use your assigned chassis

Amateurs Grid
Any driver not listed above who has already registed, plus Bernie... if you were unable to race at Mosport, please use your assigned chassis

65 Mod

These were the 65 drivers
BT7 Bonnier, Baghetti, Hulme (Bonnier drove for Walker)
BT11 Brabham Gurney Gardner Anderson Siffert (Siffert drove for Walker, Gardner and Anderson were privateers)
Lotus Clark Spence Rodriguez Mitter Russo Solana (and Maggs Hailwood Attwood Amon and Ireland for Parnell)
Ferrari Surtees Bandini Rodriguez Vaccarella Bondurant Scarfiotti
Honda Ginther Bucknum
Cooper McLaren Rindt
BRM Hill Stewart

The 1965 season was the last to use the controversial 1500cc formula which had begun after 1960, to the initial advantage of Ferrari.  The 1965 cars are smaller than the 1967 cars and have less torque and hence more grip.  It was claimed that they 'cornered on rails', however this allowed the Grand Prix series to retain the use of circuits which were otherwise to prove extremely dangerous.

The 1965 cars are ideal for those new to GPL as they allow the tracks to be learnt in light reliable cars, however these are also full Formula One cars, and quite fast....  Graham Hill won the '65 race from pole in his BRM P261, his pole time was 1:11.25.

David Wright's 'Legends' site http://fp.gplegends.plus.com/ has the download of the most recent 2.0.1 version (under 'details') as well as being an exceptional guide to both 1965 and 1967, for those interested in Formula One history.

Unfortunately the current 65 mod download does not have default setups.  Default setups can be downloaded from http://www.neurology-crew.com/gplserver under '65 setups'.  Though there may not yet be a setup for Mosport, the Brands Hatch default could work, perhaps with taller top gears.  Note that you will also have to add enough fuel for the race!

Thanks Nicky,

You're setup has helped me a huge amount.

I did change the brake baised as I found that I was locking up the rears quite often, apart from that (for me) it's great.

I take it that you brake with your right foot pretty much planted?

Excellent, I look forward to the race tomorrow. I'm not sure if I've been assigned a chassis though.

When I'd planned this division I'd wanted to set up a mixture of senior team leaders and beginners, so that each chassis had one driver who'd be a source of advice for the rest of the team.  There proved to be too many chiefs to make the concept viable, and beginners in Coopers or BT7s might be too slow compared to the rest of the field, but any help the senior drivers can give is valuable.  Perhaps something for Season 17..

If there's any other drivers still unsure about their chassis, just pm me- or post here, and I'll pm you.

Wink nope , I am left foot braking.
but always on throttle a bit while braking. maybe due to that my front tyres tents to overhead ,thatswhy my brake balance is mostly set to 48-51. dunno realy to be honest.  Grin

Note : the right steering ratio depends very much on your hardware ( PC wheel ).
so in case using someones setup , make sure to change the steering ratio to your well tried setting.

Wink another little change to the setup  ,I normaly do to those downloaded `fast guys setups `;is to reduce
the front and rear toe in , till the rear one is of about between +0,100 and +0,000.
( to keep the balance , I simply started to devide them with 2 . step by step , till I reached the above described area ).   Grin pretty sure makes it less fast . BUT much more comfortable to drive  Grin

Very helpful :
little programm called  `Setup Assistant Manager ` to fiddle out the right gear ratio.

could be found at RSC

I think that's what Al meant Nicky, you keep your right foot planted on the gas while left foot braking.

Certainly hard to train your brain to do it, but it does work so if anyone's not tried it yet, have a go and keep practicing.

Just to confirm the structure of tonights racing:

There will be two grids, the Novices grid will have ukgpl3 to themselves at 8.45 and after they've joined there will be a second server for the Amateurs, slightly later.

It might be that we have less than a full grid,  but I will still have two separate servers, as Watkins will involve a great deal of lapping and it seems better to separate fast and Novice drivers..

Yes, that's right- as you've already raced, and I haven't listed you on the Novices grid.

I have organised some beginners who haven't raced online before, they should join the Novices as well.

Maybe, but you've got far more race experience than the Novices Burt, which makes you an Amateur...
