I'm with Hristo on this one...those Ferraris were so much quicker it was depressing!!!
I did not manage to get a tow during quali so could do no better than 6th on grid, but figured that at least there would be a few loose tow ropes to grab in front of me
.
Everyone seemed ultra careful through Eau Rouge on lap 1 giving each other plenty of room, which was nice
. Unfortunately ( for some) by the time we got to Masta that goodwill appears to have vanished and there were a couple of cars practising donuts on the exit.
It was about then that I realised I was following Goran's Lotus. By the end of the lap I had realised that although the extra power of the Lotus punched Goran out of the corner faster than my Eagle, I could carry more speed and use his slipstream to keep with him.
That was pretty much the pattern of the whole race.
Dave kept Hristo busy for the first laps until he decided to change its shape, elevating Goran and myself to 2nd and 3rd respectively. I was getting quite sick of the sight of that Lotus gearbox but Goran refused to make a large enough error to provide a passing opportunity that might stick.
Then Tim loomed in the mirrors in that monster Fez!! The sheer speed of that thing on the straights even overcame the tow!!and he swept past us both to move into second and disappear into the distance. Goran managed to use tim's slipstream and ease a small gap before Tim escaped and i was pushing hard to close up on the last lap . La Source was going to be my one chance. Goran made a slight error and I was back on his tail pipes as we approached the final turn. he defended the inside line I was hoping to go around the outside, carrying enough speed so that the car did not bog down in 1st gear. It was never gonna work anyway..lol and there was a small contact that bounced me into the bales and Goran up onto the kerb. Goran crossed the line in 3rd and I followed ( as I had done throughout the race!!
) in 4th.
Grats to all finishers and great racing with Goran. Stunning recovery Tim, and timed to absolute perfection it seems.
