Summary
A race of attrition with numerous drivers falling foul of this unforgiving track. Greg Taber eventually emerged as the winner in a Maserati pressed all the way by Doni in a Silver Arrow. A somewhat distant third place went to Phil Thornton in a rather battered Lancia.

Lap 1 – Eau Rouge – Bastian Grupp, Durval Beccho, Francesco Molteni, Fulvio Policardi, Phil Thornton and Luiz Covisi
Dulima gets a great start in his Ferrari and gets the drop on Francesco. He dives into Eau Rouge with Francesco on his tail, but he has a bit of a wobble and Francesco easies off to avoid what looked like a possible spinning Ferrari. However, Dulima recovers and powers ahead but Fulvio is caught out by Francesco’s slowing Lancia. Contact is made and it starts a concertina with several cars piling into the back of each other. Thankfully most of the cars could continue without any apparent damage except for the unfortunate Luiz Covisi who was left stuck on the Armco and out of the race.
It would be harsh to apportion blame to a single individual for this incident. It is incumbent on all drivers to take care on the first corner, especially in these cars where the lack of effective brakes makes avoiding action very difficult. However, Fulvio Policardi, Phil Thornton and Bastian Grupp all made contact with the car ahead which suggests they were all driving a little too close and consequently they were more accountable for the pile-up than were the rest of the unfortunate participants. All drivers are encouraged to look beyond the car immediately in front in order to anticipate unfolding events and they should leave a sufficiently large gap such that some form of avoiding action would be possible in the event of an incident.
