Season 37 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 4 – Avus The fourth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at Automobil Verkehrs und Ubungs-Strasse near Berlin in Gemany. In English the name means "Automobile traffic and training road" and it is commonly known as AVUS. The track is a public road which was opened in 1921, it is the oldest controlled-access highway in Europe. Until 1998, it was also used as a motor racing circuit. Today, the AVUS forms the northern part of the Bundesautobahn 115.
At the time of opening, AVUS was 12 miles (19 1⁄2 km) long, each straight was approximately half the length of the track. The straights were joined at each end by flat, large-radius curves. The races were driven counter-clockwise. The track has been extensively modified over the years, in1936 the north curve was turned into a steeply banked turn (43°). It was made of bricks and didn't have a retaining barrier so cars could easily fly over the top! As the popularity of racing on straights declined the length of the straights was reduced. By 1961 the banked corners were considered too dangerous and were outlawed, so flat turns were used instead. Finally chicanes were introduced before racing finally ended in 1998.
Today we will use the 1950 layout. It is shorter than the original but it is still a mighty 5.187 miles long and features the awesome banked Nordkurve. Please read the championship specific rules on the championship standings page.

Thanks for the encouragement Phil. Is it bad luck to run over the snail on the back straight? That should have everyone looking for the snail instead of proper practice.

Isn't "snail" ( escargot) the nickname for the Gordini??? Running over a Gordini sounds like you are getting a little too competitive Clive

You are right Fran, I made a mess of the very last corner and ended up smashing into the wall and loosing 2 wheels. Just missed limping over the line by a few metres. I was trying to take it easy because there was no way Clive was going to be able to pass me on the Nordkurve but for some reason the car bottomed out (I heard a scraping sound) and I ran wide and clipped the brick kerb which flicked me into the wall. I won't make that mistake again, that brick kerb is a different colour so I should have been able to avoid it. Other than that it was a great race for me. A lot of retirements, I need to look at the replay to find out why, I suspect it was mainly down to the tricky Südkehre.
