Season 37 MIXED OPEN WHEEL – Round 7 – Clermont Ferrand
SPECIAL NOTICE – there are 24 registered drivers for this series, although maximum attendance has been below 20. Unlikely anyone will miss a race. Can RESERVE DRIVERS wait until 9pm UK to join the server. Full time drivers can join when the server opens.
The Mixed Open Wheel series in which we will be using cars from 1965, 1966, 1967 (F2) & the newly released 1968 mod. Drivers entering this series must select a manufacturer group & keep to that group for the whole season. Where more than one chassis is allocated to the group you can select any car. Pro / Works standard drivers cannot use Group 8 or Group 9.
Round 7 is the 2 litre 1966 cars. We stay in France for the Clermont Ferrand circuit in Charade, Auvergne where four Formula One French Grands Prix were held : 1965, 1969, 1970 and 1972. Due to drivers cutting corners, a stone thrown from Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus hit Helmut Marko in the eye during the 1972 French Grand Prix, ending his F1 career, as well as that of the circuit. The stones also had caused ten deflated tyres, but no big crashes. The French Grand Prix moved back to the new Paul Ricard Circuit, where the French Grand Prix was held in 1971.

We won't know until 9pm. As Billy advised in the race announcement I'm afraid you'll have to wait until 9pm and join then if there is space. Hopefully there will be. If any regulars are planning not to race please post something here so Tom will have a better idea of his chances.

Tom,
Reserve drivers (including Tom) can join the server any time after 9pm.
We haven't had a completely full grid all season so I don't expect anybody will need to miss out.
Thanks.

My steering wheel broke in the hub just before the start. So I had a loose steering wheel and could hardly shift gears... Fortunately I have enough spare parts

Unlucky Axel and Bastian The start looked very good from the back I watched a long line of cars approach turn 2 and I was expecting a shunt but no, everyone got through. Impressive driving gents. I tried to stay on the back of Tobo but I went too fast into one of the hairpins (prob because of the tow) and I lost it. I dropped to the back and any chance of staying with the bunch was gone. However, on the positive side I had a great race with Philippe and Billy. We swapped places a couple of times after making mistakes and then I found myself on Billy's gearbox for what felt like 10 laps. I tried hard but I couldn't get past. The 2.5 Climax didn't have the power and it is very hard to pass here without the lead car making a mistake. I pressurised Billy as hard and fair as I could and finally I got my chance on the last lap a mere dozen corners from the finish. Great racing Billy. Grats to Tom, Uli and Tris. A very quick trio on the podium.

What a lag party yesterday! Congratulation ToM and Tristan, nice to be with you both on podium The event was very hard to drive - shocking lags from practice to the end of the race -many, many, many lags - I can't remember the last time I had so many lags and what surprises me NEVER here in Clermont in the past even in the UKGPL - maybe it was the 66 Mod!?? Big SRY to you Yannick exactly that happened at that moment where we get in touch - I just was struggling with one of this big lags - no chance, I‘m very sorry. That's also the reason why I couldn't go faster in practice or risk more during the race - no lap without a lag. I always had to have a reserve for balancing the next lag shame, shame, no fun. After Solitude I dreamed for a chance to win again. I like that track and was well-prepared (a sub 14 seemed to be possible) BUT when I saw that alien ToM take part, I know, sry that's it - too much risk to follow him! So I was holding my position, try to finish. I‘m happy with the result and looking forward to Aintree with hopefully better conditions.

Sorry about that gents. I've no idea why, my server is usually rock solid. I'll investigate.

What a great race! This is what I was looking for when I re-built my GPL rig earlier this year... online racing at 60 FPS with tracks and drivers as good as this. No problems with the connection here, all was rock solid.
I had a good start from near the back of the grid but I was SO close to taking everyone out at T2. I made changes to my gearing after qualifying so I had a longer 5th Gear. I was so used to "listening" to the higher revs that I was still accelerating up the long hill into T2. How I got on the brakes in time with cold tyres and avoided ploughing into you all, I'll never know. Still, a good shot of adrenaline to the system and I was wide awake and ready to keep racing.
I had some fantastic battles on the way and really enjoyed chasing Andreas for many laps. I had one lapse of concentration so fell back a couple of hundred yards so had to start chasing him once again. I was really close on the last lap but then I pushed too hard with about 4 corners to go (V tight uphill right-hander after the bridge) getting the back end to step out too far and losing forward motion. This was the first time online that I've felt as though I was actually competing and not just making up the numbers on the grid.
I was really happy with my 3:22 in the EagleTF1. Sometimes in GPL the car feels "just right" and this was one of those occasions. The car felt really nimble and predictable. I can only dream of a 3:14, even if I was driving a Bugatti Veyron. I need to watch the replay and take some lessons from Alien Tom.
This track is like the Penrose Staircase; it appears to go up and up and up. It feels as though you are continually climbing. At what point do you go down hill? Weird!
Thanks once again for making me feel so welcome as a rookie reserve. Hope to see you next time at Aintree in the T1G
