Moderator's Report

First race of the season and a full grid. So were we all good and everybody got through the Red Zone cleanly?

Errr... not quite.

I could have penalised the entire field just about but I have chosen to be extremely lenient as this was very difficult for Novices to deal with. The point of penalties is to improve driving.

If people will not or can not improve, they WILL be penalised.

Server replay time: 0

Giovani blows his engine and makes a Pit stop and resets in the pits. He does not take an additional stop and go for resetting, which he should do. You CANNOT take your stop and go before you reset.

To compound the error he drives into the pit THROUGH the pit wall, which was specifically mentioned in the race post.

The pit at Kyalami is very difficult to enter at high speed and not having the wall in place gives a definite advantage.

Unfortunately both of these are penalised by disqualification.

I must apologise for publishing this late. I had forgotten to add the incident before publishing.

Server replay time: 0h01m01s

Fabio gets too close to the back of JohnnyP and taps him. Johnny helps cause this by changing his line under braking having got too close to JonnyO. I cannot stress enough that racing hard into T1 is a recipe for disaster in the mid-field. It was just all too tight and carnage ensues. Al is left nowehere to go and is one of many innocent victims!

Paul V finds anovel way to avoid the jam by spinning on the kerb at Crowthorne, crossing the track and re-joining on the other side! Amazing!

Boggy slows but is biffed by Adam who then rejoins into Billy. Boggy having done the right thing unfortunately then blots his copy book by joining right in front of Bernie.

Bernie is late through after being tagged by Ivan. Ivan then goes on to side swipe another driver and narrowly gets away with an ill-judged rejoin in front of Nigel.

After a cracking start Nigel is a bit too keen to get on the gas out of Crowthorne and inspects Rog's exhaust a bit too closely. Unfortunately for Nigel he is launched skyward by Roberto.

Once Mr Smith starts off again, he does well to avoid Boggy who literally disappears in front of him.

Tony shows everyone how it should be done by slowing and weaving through!

ALL the drivers mentioned could have been penalised - please be more careful at T1. Losing a second on the first lap will not lose you the race but it might mean somebody else's race isn't ruined.

Server replay time: 0h08m30s

Roberto is caught out by Billy having an earlier braking point. It is the responsibility of the driver behind to ensure that they do not hit the man in front. Having track position allows a driver to control the pace and the driver behind MUST ensure that they do not plough into them.

In the spirit of this moderation, the penalty is ameliorated.

Mod published. Please read it.

Drivers MUST be cautious on the first couple of corners. That is particularly true at the next venue, Albi.

Thanks for the report Paul, I think we need to learn from this debacle if only to aid the moderator and their free time.

Here is the guide I promised, with base setups for all 65 cars and replays of flying laps I did using those setups and my right foot to brake:

Johnny,
From memory the last Novice race at Albi had a qualification spread of 1.15 - 1.17 (although Novices do seem a bit quicker these days).

My best here is 1:16.4 and I generally lap at 1:17. You can make loads of time up at Double Droite by getting braking and gearing right. I don't!

For a long time I found Albi to be a real nightmare and I just could not find the 2-3 seconds that others cars were finding.

The answer ( as is often the case with me) was that I was over driving and trying to push too deep into the corners. This is especially true of Double Drat and the final corner.

So, a typical lap for me (assuming that we have tyres warmed up). Across the S/F line under max acceleration looking for your braking point for the blind entry to T1. I consider the sequence of corners from T1 to the straight as something to be approached as a whole. I have suggested gears but they will be determined by the ratios you have selected.

I try and get my braking done early for T1 downshifting complete ( probably 3rd gear) and the car settled ready to get as close to the apex as I can without hitting the bank and carrying a healthy lump of speed. As soon as I can see the track opening up I feed in the power and move out to the outside of the tarmac ( DO NOT GET A WHEEL ON THE GRASS!!) before aiming for the apex of T2...still under acceleration. Drift out again avoiding the grass, and set the car up for T3 right.
If you get the entry and line to T3 correct you will be on the power early and carry more speed with max aceleration all through T3 and T4 until you brake for Double Drat.
It is all very spectacular doing the demon braking thing for DD, but unless you get it it spot on you will be fighting for control just when you need to be very precise with both your direction and acceleration out of the other side and onto the 2nd straight. On the approach to DD I use the posts on the left side armco to determine when I can brake. There is a horrible bump in DD and if you try and stamp on the gas too soon it usually spins the car so be careful and smooth. Your chosen gearing will be critical on the exit as you want max traction ( minimal wheelspin) with as much power as you can lay down. Work on the principle that once you nail the gas you should not need to lift ( other than for upshifts) if you find that you had to lift to regain control you were on the gas too early!!.
Full bore up to the penultimate left hander, getting well over to the right. It is difficult to explain the line through here but.... remeber that this corner is more than a 90 and treat it with some respect. once you have the car hooked up and gripping the track you can give it beans on the exit and get across to the left hand side for the final corner......
This is probably as difficult as DD because of the crest on the exit. If you have too much acceleration  and are still turning as you traverse the crest you will spin and make a sudden pit stop. Just watch how many cars find themselves making a very sharp right turn!!
The secret is to try and take a late apex so that your car is more or less straight as you cross the crest and resist giving it 100% gas until you know it will grip, probably feeding in 75-80% smoothly until you are sure.

Voila a 1:08 lap!! well maybe not quite that quick  Roll Eyes
