Season 38 - SC67 - Lola vs Ferrari Cup – Round 5 - Spa67

WIP

Round 5 of the S38 Lola vs Ferrari Cup takes us to the Spa67 GPL track.
In the early 1920s, motor racing began to be held on the public roads between Francorchamps, Malmédy and Stavelot in Belgium, about 50 miles west of the (still to be proposed) Nürburgring in Germany. The Spa track was enlarged in 1951 to become the layout used here. This track hosted the Belgium Grand Prix until 1970, when the F1 drivers association declared that it was too dangerously fast. Part of the old track was used to create a shorter lap in 1979 and the F1 cars returned in 1983. Eau Rouge is one of the most famous parts of any track in the world. The stream gets its name from the presence of iron oxide deposits giving it a reddish colour. The track crosses the Eau Rouge again halfway around the lap, on a bridge seen as a low parapet either side of the track just at the start of the Stavelot corner.

Please check the Season 38 details regarding rules and the Lola vs Ferrari Cup pages in particular.
In order to add an element of realism, and to hopefully reduce the possibility of rear-end incidents, the brake light patch will be used  eek

Handicapping

"Works" drivers will carry extra weight in form of 10 gallons of race fuel (to remain in the tank after the race). No limit in quali!
Drivers are expected to behave in a fair and gentlemanly fashion and declare how much fuel they have left after the race.

In order to ensure there will be 10 gallons of fuel left after the race, the minimum race fuel load for Works is expected to be:

  • Lola T70 = 28 gallons (~106 litres)
  • Ferrari P4 = 29 gallons (~110 litres)

2 x resets will be allowed there is no need to carry out a Stop and Go in the pit lane if you make a Shift-R.

Drivers are reminded that Lap 1 incidents carry an extra 1 place penalty.
Only reported incidents will be moderated.

Please restrict chat to emergency messages only including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

I did a couple of sighting laps yesterday. These cars are heavy beasts particularly after driving the 65s!

This is only my 2nd online race at Spa. The last was a disaster for me in the F2s in the MoW season. My goal tonight is to stick on the track and finish - anything else will be a bonus. Eau Rouge in these heavy cars is a real challenge.

Wow! It looks like it's been a good season so far. I wish I were still good enough to race with Tristan, Alain, and Mark on a regular basis. Mark won Dundrod. Smiley He's good there. I still remember blowing the lead there on the last lap in the old Ferrari 330. Even at my best I had to drive almost flawlessly to beat Mark.

I might try to make this race. Don't count on it though.

Hi Greg! You should definitely come to spa. I still totally remember that race at Dundrod, and how you would have won if your engine hadn't detonated.

A thousand pardons, Philippe.  I was caught between a rock and a hard place.

Great fun with Fulvio til I fell off most unexpectedly.

That was a hard race in these machines. I managed to avoid Francesco's accident at Stavelot on lap 1 but by then I'd lost any chance of a tow. I settled down to try to finish the race and apart from being passed by a recovering Greg, for 8 laps or so it was uneventful. But then I lost my concentration and crashed at Masta. Had to do a Shift-R which took an eternity. By the time I'd got going again I'd lost my very comfortable 1.5 mile gap back to Pete. It was down to 800 yards with Cookie just behind Pete. I pushed as hard as I could but Cookie caught me on the last lap. But I managed to hold Pete off. Grats to Mark on a well deserved win and to Greg for an amazing recovery.

I need to watch the replay on this one. From the cockpit of my Lola the start looked amazing as 5 red cars shot off in front of me up through Eau Rouge. Is this a game or art?

I was really pleased with my qualifying time and happy to be clinging onto the leading group for a couple of laps. I made a mistake and had to Shift-R which meant a stop/start in the pits. I then had a good battle with Philippe. At one point he bumped into the back of me at the hair-pin but, being a true gentleman, he waited for me to go past him on the start/finish line. It's such a pleasure to race with you guys - true sportsmanship all round.

I had Cookie chasing me hard in my mirrors. For some reason his car kept appearing and disappearing in my mirrors - some kind of warping. I could hear him but not always see him. I'll have to have a look at the replay to check this out more closely so I apologise to Axel if I caused him any pain. There was some sort of invisibility cloak on his Ferrari.

I tried chasing down Phil but the gap was too big, even after his Shift-R. I resigned myself to a comfortable finish without pushing the engine or myself too hard. Very happy with the 43 points in the Privateers' championship.

I've now got GPL running just perfectly on Linux and everything seems so much better, especially the response from the steering. It's really helping. If you've not tried it yet, I highly recommend it. Anyway, see you all at the next one. Brands Hatch I believe. Thanks for this brilliant series.

Sorry Paul V.   Cry
I went out of the track and when I rejoined I had no idea about the good direction and, of course, I choose the wrong ...and so hit your car and be DQ by GPL.

I can't remember when it occured (probably after 3 or 4 laps), I will report an incident.
