Season 40 - SC67 Cup – Round 6 - Targa Florio

We will be in Sicily and drive a lap at the Targa Florio.
The Targa Florio was an open road endurance automobile race held in the mountains of Sicily near the island's capital of Palermo. Founded in 1906, it was the oldest sports car racing event, part of the World Sportscar Championship between 1955 and 1973. While the first races consisted of a whole tour of the island, the track length in the race's last decades was limited to the 72 kilometres (45 mi) of the Circuito Piccolo delle Madonie, which was lapped 11 times.

IMPORTANT

Please start your last qualifying lap with minimum ~ 30min time left!

GPL will shut the quali after ~11min overtiming, even if you are 100m from the finish line!

We will do "only" one racing lap, (but the server will show 2) so please be cooperative when a faster car/driver is behind you.

Unlimited resets will be allowed - please be carefull to not endanger others.

When you crossed the finish line after the race lap - please stop your car and leave the track within 500m.
IMPORTANT

Please check the Season 40 details regarding rules and the SCX Cup pages in particular.
In order to add an element of realism, and to hopefully reduce the possibility of rear-end incidents, the brake light patch will be used  eek

Race List =  IGOR
Server = UKGPL_8_60fps

Race date = 01-04-2022

Quali starts = 20:30  UK time -> 60min
Race starts = ~21:30 UK time
Race length = ~50 min -> 1 lap
Damage Model = Intermediate

Handicapping

"Works" drivers will carry extra weight in form of  6 gallons (~27 Liter) of race fuel
(to remain in the tank after the race). No limit in quali!
Drivers are expected to behave in a fair and gentlemanly fashion and declare how much fuel they have left after the race.

Only reported incidents will be moderated.

Please restrict chat to emergency messages only including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Thanks, Cookie. I just did my first lap. Wow! What a masterpiece this is. It should be in the Louvre.

I'm pretty pleased with a 40min 04 sec for a very first lap. My goal was to go under 60 minutes without killing any sheep. I hope to see you later but I have a feeling that real-life may get in the way.

Got my lap in without too much drama.  A couple of very minor wall kisses that will buff out.  Some 20 seconds off my personal best in the GT40 but I did zero pre-race testing so quite pleased at the lap.  Started with 14USG onboard.  Took the flag with 6.7USG showing as left to burn.

Greg leading when I left the server.  No surprise.  He's the Targa specialist.  Smiley

That was wild.

Despite my quali lap being garbage in my book I still qualified second on the grid behind Greg.
On the start, he got surprisingly slow off the line and I was able to get past him on the right side.
Throughout Sector 1 and Cerda he kept close to me, until he made a mistake driving out of the town. This gave me a gap of about 250 - 300 yards. Throughout the entire lap I had to keep pushing to keep a distance on him. What was most important was that I had a good enough gap so he wouldn't be close enough to pass me on the 6 kilometer long straight.

The gap remained pretty much balanced throughout the entire run. Sometimes he gained some time on me, sometimes I gain time on him. I think both had our shares of mistakes driving through the Sicilian landscape until coming close to the village Campofelice di Roccella, the gap was still roughly 300 yards! I felt like I was in the danger zone at that point. Somewhere in between, though, the gap suddenly increased to 600 yards by the time we got to the straight. That was a good enough buffer. Greg gained about 200 yards solely because of the Porsche clear superiority on the straights...

...COMPARED TO THE ALFA ROMEO  Grin

Throughout the last sector I lost another 200 yards as I was driving overly conservative through the final bit and just didn't want to make an unforced error. By the pit lane, however, the gap was about 150 - 200 yards and at that point I was sure I had it covered.

I had to push a lot and really gave it my best because of how fast he was and I knew I had a big disadvantage at the straight. But I'm really happy with this win. Probably not my last, but most likely my second last race with the Logitech G920, as after 4,5 years of service I'm retiring it as I bought myself a new Thrustmaster T248, with shifter T-LCM pedals. So this result is a worthy send-off for a very fine wheel I had a pleasure driving with. Salute

Thanks for organizing Axel, good fun.

Had some good racing with Evil and Dave. Thanks guys.

Not sure what happened to Pete but was hoping to improve my time by giving chase. . All in all was fun. This track is so iconic and the GPL version is a masterpiece.

The drive was better than hoped for as I've never practiced it or driven it before. Had a blast in general considering I had no bloody idea what direction the track, or my good self was going most of the time.

As I got into the drive, I wasn't racing. It was like taking a new car for a blast out on a new road. It was possibly the most realistic and immersive drive of my , proud to say 23+ year GPL career.

Congrats on the win Yannick.

Paul.

Hi. The red mist came down so I abandoned ship and made myself a cup of tea.

I had a good start but then managed to spin/crash/stop/collide/bounce/smash/annoy/reset many times within the first mile so I quit before I took poor old Tris and Paul out many more times.  Hit with a wet fish

I did not have my GPL head on yesterday and was not enjoying it so I left. Still, this track has given me an idea for Season 41...  whistling

Grats to Yannick, Greg and Tris on the podium.

I think Paul might have recognised all of Pete's issues within my driving, as I did my best to destroy the Porker at every corner!!

Although I am in awe of the track builders work in creating this Targa circuit, I am afraid that I cannot commit the necessary time or effort to "learn" this iconic track. If we had track notes as per IOM which gave us a clue as to what comes next it might be more fun for me.

Ironically I did a practice lap that felt reasonably good and it was more a case of building a setup that was very forgiving, with a long enough 5th gear for the straight. When the race started things felt OK and when there was an early incident between a couple of cars ahead I was suddenly running in the top 5!!! .

I was guilty of paying too much attention to my mirrors and not enough concentration on the road ahead. When one's tactics are basically point and squirt, the important thing is getting into each corner safely, focus on all of the clues about the track ahead is critical.  I failed in every department and the frustration was immense, which brought in the red fog and from then on it is was getting worse and worse.

I won't even call it "racing" with Paul as I probably held him up with my antics, but I was hugely relieved to eventually see the finish.

So this was a proper race?  I thought it was just set a time in qualifying and that's it.  Did so and left the server thinking I'd done the job.  Sigh...  Live & learn...
