Season 40 – CanAM – Round 7 – Donnybrooke 1971 / Brainerd

For round 7 we keep everything in 1971 by racing the 71 CanAm cars on the 1971 track Donnybrooke. Please don't be confused by the name change to 'Brainerd'. If you're looking for this on the track database, you won't find it. You need the donbro71 folder. We also return to a ROLLING START.

Brainerd International Raceway (Donnybrooke 1971) is a 3.1-mile (4.989 km) road course, dragstrip and kart track near Brainerd, Minnesota, USA. The raceway hosts the National Hot Rod Association's Lucas Oil Nationals. It is a popular racetrack for the Trans Am Series. The spectator seating capacity of the circuit is 20,000.

Opened in 1968 as Donnybrooke Speedway there were no safety barriers, run-out areas, grandstands or even restrooms. George Montgomery and Bud Stall cleared the racetrack through a wooded area on the south side of North Long Lake. With the help of St Paul Sports Promoter Dennis Scanlan It hosted a 2 heat USAC Indy Car race in 1969. The heats were won by Gordon Johncock and Dan Gurney.

In 1973 Jerry Hansen bought the track and renamed it Brainerd International Raceway. It played host to CanAm races in 1970, 1971, and 1972. These races were won by, respectively, Denny Hulme, Peter Revson, and François Cevert.

ROLLING STARTS

Red Line is at the exit of T3.

If you want to download this track without SMRZ working, you can find it on Rookie4ever site

here :  https://www.grandprixlegends.fr/telechargements-archives

Then search D3  in the section beginning by "Si les liens ci-dessus ne vous ont pas permis de trouver ce que vous cherchez, la solution se trouve peut-être ci dessous"

I’m sorry for the inconvenience during testing (especially with Axel).
I had (and still have) troubles with the "shift down" button and had to change it just before the race then it was not easy to change my habits.

Yes, sorry for that, Fran.  I thought that you were giving me the corner you being a lap down and all.  Happy to see that you were able to continue.

Grats to our podium finishers.  Nice recovery by Greg to score P2.  Fulvio full marks on taking P3.

No less than four Ferrari 712M's started this race.  Such a pity that in real-life, the car made only one start in the Glen CanAm as driven by Mario Andretti.  My run in the 712M went really well for the most part.

This is a really great circuit if only for the T1-T2 combo.  Every time I set for it, I hold my breath.  Smiley

All manner of dramas in this race and they started even before we got to racing.  For some reason, Pete seemed to think he started ahead of me and passed me on the pace run coming out of T1.  I tried to get inside of him exiting T2 to resume my P5 starting slot but accidentally biffed him in the tail and off the road.  Sorry for that, Pete, but...

It didn't take long for a major development as both Yannick and Greg were off the road in T4.  Up to a tasty P3 now and with Fulvio breathing down my neck.  I was able to hold him til he got a nice tow on the front straight and ripped by for the place as we approached T1 to start Lap04.  By Lap07, I was still in close contact with Fulvio when Yannick now appeared in my mirrors and was threatening.  Wasn't in the least bit surprised to see him in recovery mode and wondered, too, how long it would be before Greg became a factor.  I was able to hold off Yannick til he got the tow to start Lap11 and he was by and away.  No sooner had Yannick cleared me then I picked up Greg in my mirrors.  Again, no surprise at all.  Cookie was also close and a factor recovering from his earlier spin.  Greg made short work of me with far more grip than I have so it was a matter of just trying to hang onto his coat tails as the race progressed.  In the space of a single lap, I'd lost two places.

Cookie fell off the road only moments later to leave me unmolested from behind so I just concentrated on hitting my marks as best I was able as the laps ran off.  Up ahead, Greg had passed both Yannick and Fulvio to claim P2.  Yannick and Fulvio were in a fine old duel some six seconds ahead of me when Yannick had a major off exiting T9 going under the bridge on Lap26.  He only just regained the track mere metres ahead of me.  I trailed closely for a couple of laps til Yannick got crossed-up in the final corner at the end of Lap29 and lost exit speed.  This gave me my chance to blast by and take the place by the time we arrived at T1.  Only moments later, though, Yannick clipped my tail in T2 and I was off the road on the infield.  He spun, too, but kindly waited for me to regain the track surface.  Back up to speed, I knew that these last couple of laps were going to be nail-biters so gave it everything I had.  Going through T9 and under the bridge, I only just caught the grass verge and thinking nothing of it, figured I'd hold the place for the run up to the last corner.  Suddenly, the Ferrari went for a wild ride on the outfield grass where I struck a fence and got launched high into the air.  Ended up behind a barrier wondering just WTH had just happened.  Collected my thoughts, drove down off the berm and carried on somewhat dismayed at events that cost me the shot at P4.  Can't be too unhappy, though.  After that late-race off, lucky to have finished at all.

one start in 1971 (Mario Andretti, 4th at Watkins Glen)
two in 1972 (JP Jarier, 10th at Watkins Glen, 4th at Road America)
and one in 1974 (Brian Redman DNF at Watkins Glen)

A very nice car :

Congrats Tristan and Fulvio!

Nice recap Doni. And thanks Dave. I didn´t know the 712 made 3 other appearances. I like the 712 alot. If I am correct it´s the largest engine Ferrari ever used. It´s also similar to the 512M, one of my favorite racing cars. I´m also a bit of a snob and like the overhead camshaft that the Ferrari has unlike the V8s.

I thought I might be able to get a podium spot with the Ferrari. I´ve got plenty of experience with it and Donnybrooke. I don´t drive it much anymore but I look forward to it when I do. I noticed my setup was 7 years old. So it´s been a while since I drove it here. It´s a gas guzzler though. I ran out of fuel with one lap remaining. GPL´s setup menu said I had enough for 34 laps. It´s funny that I´ve run it out of fuel here before while racing with the ADC league.

That was a very good lap time Yannick got in practice. I needed to get lucky if I was going to beat it, but I didn´t think his Porsche would be strong enough to match my pace in the race. It´s unlikely he would have been kept from the win or podium if he was in the Ferrari or Lola.

That was a horrible start for me. The first turn taken at speed sent me to the back. I was ill prepared for the car´s behavior the first two laps. After that it ran fine and I had never the problem of scorching the left front tire like I was doing in practice.

I was right behind other drivers the majority of the race. There was no way I could or would ever pass while the car in front of me was in a slipstream. It was good to watch Fulvio´s consistency. At one point he had me worried I run out of time but most of the race I thought I´d eventually get around him.

Greg made short work of me with far more grip than I have so it was a matter of just trying to hang onto his coat tails as the race progressed.

I was faster through the turn under the bridge than anybody I followed there. Like I did you, taking the inside into the last turn was the best place for me to pass. The turn under the bridge is my favorite turn. If you get it right, you can do a very nice powerslide after the apex.

Thanks for the fun gentlemen.

Drivers, please do let me know if you spot any mistakes

If it matters at the end of the season, Tristan should be scored P2 at Laguna Seca. The time penalty for doing a standing start instead of rolling start would place me at P3 instead of P2.

I can't understand why the creators of the Canam71 mod gave this strange rear wing (not flat but rounded) to the Ferrari 712M in Grand Prix Legends ?

I think Ferrari arrived at Watkins Glen in 1971 with that wing. It was removed before qualifying or the race. It´s been so long I can´t remember the story I read. This link might show you a picture of the car with the wing installed. It´s looks like it was taken at Watkins Glen since you can see the blue guard rail in the background.

There seemed to be a little confusion in Friday's CanAm71 race as to whom was starting where.  Some of that is due to the default grid layout being employed which has a mere 5m deep spacing with a more than generous 10m lateral spacing.  Those figures could well be reversed for a more user friendly arrangement.  The default layout is shown below...

stall_0   =   4808   4.5
stall_1   =   4803   -5.5
stall_2   =   4793   4.5
stall_3   =   4788   -5.5
stall_4   =   4778   4.5
stall_5   =   4773   -5.5
stall_6   =   4763   4.5
stall_7   =   4758   -5.5
stall_8   =   4748   4.5
stall_9   =   4743   -5.5
stall_10   =   4733   4.5
stall_11   =   4728   -5.5
stall_12   =   4718   4.5
stall_13   =   4713   -5.5
stall_14   =   4703   4.5
stall_15   =   4698   -5.5
stall_16   =   4688   4.5
stall_17   =   4683   -5.5
stall_18   =   4673   4.5
stall_19   =   4668   -5.5

To avoid this in future rolling starts, I provide below a single-file layout which can't possibly result in not knowing whom you follow or lead off the static grid.  I tested this at Donnybrooke just this morning and it works just fine.  In fact, it can be used at any circuit where a roller start is desired.  Note that there is not a reading for position with respect to the lap length but rather a set back of 20 metres from the SFline and located laterally directly upon the track centreline.  This should be adequate to see the starter in any GPL track.  If you wish to try this arrangement at Donnybrooke or any other circuit, please backup your existing track.ini file for safeties sake.  To use, simply cut/paste to your track.ini file replacing the original data.

stall_0    = -20.0 0.0
stall_1    = -30.0 0.0
stall_2    = -40.0 0.0
stall_3    = -50.0 0.0
stall_4    = -60.0 0.0
stall_5    = -70.0 0.0
stall_6    = -80.0 0.0
stall_7    = -90.0 0.0
stall_8    = -100.0 0.0
stall_9    = -110.0 0.0
stall_10 = -120.0 0.0
stall_11 = -130.0 0.0
stall_12 = -140.0 0.0
stall_13 = -150.0 0.0
stall_14 = -160.0 0.0
stall_15 = -170.0 0.0
stall_16 = -180.0 0.0
stall_17 = -190.0 0.0
stall_18 = -200.0 0.0
stall_19 = -210.0 0.0

If tried, please report back here on your results.

Edit: While I was setting this up to post, Greg provided the link to the Ferrari with rear wing dihedral feature.  Nice spot, GT.
