Moderator's Report

Summary
A maiden win for Pepe with Dave Curtis completing a terrific recovery drive to claim the second step on the podium. Third place goes to Philippe Girard in his Cooper.

Server replay time: 0h00m55s

Lap 1 The Esses – Albert Hallu, Bernie Darwin, Dave Curtis, David Rainier and Francesco Molteni
Dave Curtis gets a better start than Francesco and overtakes him around the outside of turn 1. As they approach the left-hand bend of the Esses, Dave is practically a whole car length ahead and on the inside line. Francesco tries to take the normal racing line and moves across, but Dave is already there and contact is made between Francesco’s front nearside wheel and Dave’s offside rear wheel. Both cars spin off the track. Bernie sees the contact ahead and quite correctly backs off to avoid getting mixed up in the melee. Albert is behind Bernie and backs off too but unfortunately not enough and he rear-ends Bernie. David Rainier sees what is happening and slows down enough to avoid contact but he is forced off the track by Bernie’s car which is upside down and spinning onto the grass.

Dave Curtis and David Rainier can continue but they lose a lot of time. Albert only loses a little time but Bernie and Francesco are out.

Dave Curtis did nothing wrong.

Bernie did nothing wrong.

David Rainier did nothing wrong.

Albert Hallu should have noticed the accident ahead and should have slowed more.

Francesco must shoulder the responsibility for this incident. It should have been blatantly obvious that Dave Curtis was ahead and he should not have turned in. It is not acceptable to stick to the racing line oblivious to the other drivers.

  • Albert Halluadvice — Be prepared to slow down for incidents especially at the start.
  • francesco (Fran67 Molteni)penalty — Simple Side by Side contact and an extra place for lap 1 — 2 places lost

Season 41 1967F1 PRIVATEERS – Round 1 – WATKINS GLEN

The first race in the 1967 Grand Prix series series takes us to Watkins Glen in the USA. Watkins Glen International ("The Glen") is an auto race track located near Watkins Glen, New York, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake. It was long known around the world as the home of the United States Grand Prix, which it hosted for 20 consecutive years (1961–1980). In the early years races passed through the heart of the town with spectators lining the sidewalks, but after a car left the road in a 1952 race, killing one spectator and injuring several others, the race was moved to a new location on a wooded hilltop southwest of town. Later a permanent race course was constructed on 550 acres, overlapping part of the previous course. Despite improvements, the circuit became unable to safely handle the increasingly faster and stiffer ground effect cars of the late 70s and a few horrendous, sometimes fatal accidents and increasingly rowdy segments of the crowd began to tarnish its image. Finally, in May, 1981, several months after Alan Jones had won the 1980 race for Williams, the International Auto Sports Federation removed the race from its schedule because the track had failed to pay its debts to the teams

I'm not used to writing a post-race report from the perspective of a winner. This is the first time I've seen the checkered flag before anyone else, and all it took me was five years and 88 starts.

I had a PB in the Cooper by about half a second, but Eric is faster than I am 90% of the time and he was just behind me on the grid. The three guys in front of me routinely slap me around like a red-headed stepchild.  Toward the end of qualifying I was feeling so glum that I told my wife I was thinking of disqualifying myself and starting from the back of the grid. She asked why. I told her, "I don't belong up there at the front with all those fast guys." The lesson I learned from this is: Run a few laps, try not to hit anyone, and see what happens.

Almost metronomically the leaders began to peel away: Ricardo blew up on L9, Philippe dropped a few places with a visit to the bales, and Cookie exploded his motor ten laps later. I'd not had the lead before in a UKGPL race since we raced at Bugatti a year or two ago. The difference between then and now was that Philippe was chasing me then and Eric was drilling a hole in my tail pipe now. In other words, there was no difference at all: They're both faster than I am even on their bad days (which are few).

I never had more than a single second's lead over Eric for the next twenty-two laps. Watching the two of us in the replay on TV view is simply mesmerizing. We look joined at the hip. But then this insane duel ended when he went out on L31 with the third crumped engine.

Now it was Dave Curtis' turn to make my life miserable. My lead over him was just three seconds with a dozen laps to go, but I figured that catching me in his Cooper would be one thing but passing me for position would be something else. It was only at the end, when I crossed the S/F line half a second in front of him, that I realized he'd been in a Brab. Had I known that with five laps to go, I'd probably have fainted onto my Victorian swooning couch.

So all's well that ends well, they say. Now if we could just cancel the rest of the season, I'll have won my first league championship. That would be a first too!  Smiley

Grats Pepe for your maiden win!

Bad season start for me: I just re-connected the wheel to the PC since several weeks but it's still too hot on my race corner at home.
Few training laps on Saturday evening were not enough to get a good pace and after few racing laps on the back an accident on the loop close my evening.
See you on next one
Cheers
