Season 41 - Ferrari Challenge  ROUND 1  Sempione 1937

"Welcome to the 1st round of the 2022 Ferrari Challenge at Parco Sempione. This series should provide close racing and will test driving skill to the limit.
Parco Sempione (Simplon Park) is a large city park in Milan. The park was established in 1888 but the circuit dates from 1937 when the likes of Nuvolari, Rudolf Caracciola and Bernd Rosemeyer drove outrageous cars like the Mercedes-Benz W125 and Auto Union Type C.  A very tight track characteristic of the early days of motor sport, public roads and virtually no concept of safety precautions. You may choose either of the two Ferraris available to you for this first race. "

Great race with Enrique and Doni. Sorry about the touch Enrique. I ran off the road trying to avoid rear ending Philippe who was trying to avoid your crash. When I reversed out of the bales I had no idea where you were. I should have checked Pribluda but in the heat of the moment it is very difficult to stay cool. Thanks for waiting. We did a lot of close racing over many laps without contact. Not easy to do in these cars on such a tough track with 2 heavy braking zones. The brakes were in the red too much  eek

IMO the secret with the 55 mod is getting the power down early i.e. slow into the corner but fast out. You can't rely on the brakes so you slow down early using engine braking and scrub off speed by sliding sideways. The slowing down early is more than compensated for when you get a good exit.

Grats to the podium finishers.
So can someone please explain why this stupid person did exactly that for Sempione!!!  I paid a heavy price for that change with a car that went from reasonably quick and stable to suicidal under braking. oops

Apologies to anyone who was compromised by a Ferrari that wanted to bury itself in the haybales at every corner.  Sad By about mid race I had adjusted my driving to suit the vicious handling and started to gain on those ahead.

Commiserations to Enrique who made a late error and gave me a chance of catching Phil, but I ran out of laps and ended up just about where I started, 5th!

@ David
With the 55 cars David you will need to decide at which corners you are going to really need the brakes and where you can use only downshifts and maybe a quick touch on the brakes for more open corners. Changing your setup to give a little "power on oversteer" will allow you to brake in a straight line and then gently feed on the power through the corners.
TBH the hairpin at the end of the lap gave me problems on every lap. Ideally I should have been able to do a handbrake turn around the inner haybales, but the setup required for that would have screwed everything for the rest of the lap.

At Sempione I found that the 2 hairpins were the critical braking zones and for the rest of the lap I tried to avoid using the brakes if I could. Back off the gas and downshift early, and don't be afraid to use 1st gear ( always checking that you don't over rev the engine  Wink ).
I still had to watch the coloured indicator on the dashboard and for GREEN I knew where my braking limit was. If the Indicator showed YELLOW then I would need to back off and downshift 50 mtrs earlier, and if RED maybe 100-150 mtrs sooner. Lift and Coast to preserve the brakes works well.

Forgive the late filing, chaps.  We're in the middle of a house move situation and things are very much in a state of flux.

Bravo to Yannick on a fine win.  Kudos to Pete for nailing down P2.  To walk away from Sempione with the P3 trophy tucked under my arm was beyond my wildest expectations.

Early laps went well and thanks to the misfortunes of Evil Clive and Leo, I found myself in a tidy P5.  Lap15 gave me a start as I came across the shunt of Paul and Philippe and couldn't avoid.  It wasn't flagged and I made it a threesome.  Lucky to have got away from that without damage and still hold onto P5.  The big break came on Lap23 when Phil and Ricky collided and I slipped by to claim P3.  Felt a little guilty about profiting from that.  Not a whole lot, mind you.  Just a little.  Wink

Had a couple of scares on braking for the two hairpins but managed to hang on and score a podium.  Could have been a lot worse.

The Ferrari Challenge is an interesting series and I'm pleased to support it.
