Moderator's Report

Summary
Maddog battles through an eventful race to claim victory ahead of Francesco and Philippe.

Server replay time: 0h24m59s

Lap 10 Turn 1 – Bernie Darwin and Francesco Molteni
Francesco is leads Bernie over the finish line by about 25 metres. As they approach turn 1, Francesco slows down to 66 mph at the apex which is consistent with his previous laps. Bernie has generally been a little quicker than Francesco through this corner (about 73 mph at the apex) and on this lap he is again a bit quicker than Francesco (Bernie was doing 80 mph at the apex). Bernie would have made the corner but on realising he was closing on Francesco, he tried to take avoiding action by taking a tighter line but nevertheless side-by-side contact was made. The contact was slight and probably exacerbated by warp, so the effect on both drivers was minimal with Francesco hardly losing any time. Bernie completed a half spin and he could continue without stopping but he lost sufficient momentum and speed to allow Maddog to overtake him.

Francesco did nothing wrong.

Bernie didn’t slow sufficiently to avoid contact. It is very easy to rear-end drivers in these cars. The brakes are so bad, a slight misjudgement can be catastrophic. So whilst no real harm was done, the responsibility for the contact lies with Bernie.

Season 41 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 4 – Privateers - Bremgarten

The fourth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series takes us to Bremgarten in Switzerland. Bremgarten is situated to the north of Bern and was built as a motor cycle track in 1931. The circuit itself had no true straight, instead being a collection of high-speed corners. From the outset, it’s tree-lined roads, often poor light conditions and changes in road surface made for what was acknowledged to be a very dangerous circuit, especially in the wet.

The Swiss Grand Prix was held at Bremgarten between 1934 and 1939 and again between 1947 and 1954. In 1950 the Swiss Grand Prix was included in the new Formula One World Championship. The race was won by Italian Nino Farina, who would go on to be the first Formula One world champion. In 1951 Argentine Juan Manuel Fangio dominated in his Alfa after taking advantage of Farina's wrong decision not to make a pit stop to change tyres during changing wet-to-dry conditions. In 1952 newcomer Stirling Moss ran as high as third in his underfunded Alta-powered HWM, but the race was won by Italian Piero Taruffi who scored his first and only F1 victory. In fact this Grand Prix was only championship race (other than the Indianapolis 500) not won that year by Alberto Ascari. In 1953 Ascari had to make a pit stop to fix the misfiring engine in his Ferrari. He left the pits in fourth place and stormed round the circuit, passing Fangio in a Maserati, and his teammates Farina and Mike Hawthorn to take victory. Ascari also won his second Drivers' Championship at that event. In 1954 Fangio (now driving a Mercedes) led from start to finish in rainy weather to take his second Drivers' Championship from countryman José Froilán González. Bremgarten has not hosted an official motorsports event since 1955, when spectator racing sports were banned in Switzerland.

The trouble with this track is the trees get in the way!  It's my first race of 1955 in some time.  My last trip to this track, I tripped up on my last practice lap, had a screen freeze, and missed the race.  So, grabbed that setup, and set off from where I'd been off left.

It was an epic battle, with four of us in contention.  Places swopped, and the race hung in the balance for many laps.  Happy to have survived a track in need of a chain saw.  Cool

After a very cautious start, I could overtake Philippe and Albert and almost re-join the leading trio.

On lap 17 I was battling for the 2nd place, but there was a contact with Bernie's car and I lost contact with Francesco
so on the last lap, I tried to do my best to re-join Francesco ...but I hit something (wall or tree or house ?) and lose a wheel.

Yes I think that was a bit of an overambitious move on my part , I thought I could squeeze up the inside which was working nicely until I suddenly met that fly paper fence .
Glad to see you could carry on !
