Season 41 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 5 – Works - Valentino

The fifth race in the 1955 Grand Prix series finds us at Turin in Italy. Parco del Valentino (also known as Valentino Park) is a popular public park in Turin. It is located along the west bank of the Po river.  Several races were held here between 1935 and 1955, it is the 1955 layout that we will be using for this race.  This is a very challenging circuit with virtually no run-off areas, plenty of undulations and blind corners.  Discretion is the better part of valour for this track. The 1955 race held at this circuit was a non-championship formula 1 race called the VII Gran Premio del Valentino. The race was won by Alberto Ascari in a Lancia D50. This was Lancia’s first ever victory in a Formula 1 race.

Please note: We are using the v3 version of this track. It is the final and best version with a new layout, new objects and new textures. Ginetto also moved the Start/Finish line to the correct place according to pictures from the real race in 1955. We are NOT using the older version which has a track directory called turin55.

I had a lot of difficulties at this track in previous years, so I chose a weak car to finish as a goal.
But at the end of the qualy I was surprised by my pace and I was more optimistic. But in a few laps I made a mistake and dropped to 8 th , I had the help of Doni and Farina to get to 6 th and at the end of the race to my surprise I passed in 3 rd !!!! I still haven't figured out how!

Congrats Yannick for win !! and Phill the great 2 nd!!!

Very pleased to grab P2 but it was due to other's misfortune rather than my outright speed. I was surprised to still have the leaders in sight after 20 laps but Yannick, Clive and Leo were too quick. I just tried to focus on my own race and not to try to keep up with the leaders. It worked great and I only made one slight mistake when I clipped a haybale after being distracted by the yellow flags being waved in response to Clive's crash. Luckily, I got away with it and I managed to keep my concentration to the flag.

Tonight I was too tired after a day trekking on the mountain so I was ready to start last on the grid. In Q I had some fps drop with cars in view so I reduced object view to some. In Q worked well, but at start and I had 30 fps with some lag and went on when I had cars around. At start gained two spots cause a slow start by Pete that managed to contain later, but at one point I went on the side walk on the right under the bridge and my car jumped bad and the engine was damaged. I went on trying to reach half distance, but the engine lasted to the finish and I gained one position cause Evil misfortune. I was already 2 laps down when dramas happened in the end so I couldn't gain anything more.  angel
I hope to haven't been a mobile chicane when I was lapped by all.

Well I made a right mess of that one!

But great racing with Leo and Yannick.

I kept ending up in neutral?

Well done the Soggie Privateers!  You are putting the works team to shame!

Heavens!  Three...count 'em, three...late-race DNF's gifted me with a P5 finish.  I was coasting along in P8 and quite happy to finish there so to be bumped up to P5 was quite astonishing.  Our fallers were Clive Loynes, Evil Clive and Leo.  Geeezzz...

From the start, I got away cleanly but on the straight leading to Borgo Medioevale on Lap01, suffered an all-mighty FPS drop.  I quickly scanned my NET bars but they seemed OK.  The distraction had me bungle the entry to that tricky complex and I road the banking there.  Lucky to have been able to continue.  The frames bounced back immediately so were not a factor from there on.

I was ever mindful of just how easy it is to burn out the brakes here so cautiously let the laps reel off.  Jonny had suffered a spin in the last chicane to fall in behind me and when he dashed back, I saw no point in holding him up.  Gave him a wave by.  My net position at this point was P8 and stayed there til those last fateful laps.  Lucky boy.

All I will say is that Jackie Stewart was right to campaign to remove trees and lamp posts from the track edges. Bloody stupid place to leave a lamp post IMHO, especially when it rips 3 wheels off the car with just one lap to go.  cursing cursing

Grats to the podium guys and commiserations to those who did not quite make the flag.

I can readily agree with your sentiments on that, Clive.

I recall the race reports of the 1966 Sebring 12 Hours of Endurance.  There, our Canadian champion of 1965, Bob McLean, was torched in the Comstock Ford GT40 when he skipped off the road and struck a telephone pole after just gassing up from a pit stop.  Track owner/organizer, Alec Ulmann, referred to such things as 'natural hazards'.  Yea, sure...

After my usual slow start, I was happy to benefit from the demise of others to get 6th place. Sorry for those who missed out but thank you for the points in my little Gordini. I did have a few 'moments' with the scenery en-route as I still drive around Ginetto's tracks in awe of his ability to create these masterpieces. Bravo!
