Season 41 1967F1 PRIVATEERS – Round 6 – Dundrod

We will drive the old (1965) version!

For the 6th race of the 1967 F1 Privateers Championship, we visit Dundrod in Northern Ireland. The Dundrod Circuit was first used in 1950 for the RAC Tourist Trophy Sports Car race and for the Formula One (non-championship) Ulster Trophy. The Sports Cars raced again in 1951 through to 1955 and the Formula 1 cars from 1951 through to 1953. The circuit comprised public roads closed for racing including a section of the B38 Hannahstown Road between Glenavy and Hannahstown, a section of the B101 Leathemstown Road from Leathemstown Corner to Dundrod and a section of the B153 Quarterland/Tornagrough Road from Cochranstown to the road junction of the B38 Upper Springsfield Road/Hannahstown Road at the Lindsay Hairpin. The last car race held on the Dundrod Circuit was the 1955 RAC Tourist Trophy race in which sadly there were 3 fatalities. The narrow, high-speed nature of the circuit, meant it was just too dangerous and since then it has only been used for motorcycle racing.

Lest there be any confusion about this, the track we will be running next Sunday is the original Dundrod (track directory "Dundrod") that Pearson released in 2004. When this season's schedule was announced back in August, the track to be used was Pearson's update from last year (track directory "Dund1955"). Do not confuse these two directories. They are not even close (e.g., Monaco and Monacane), but they are equally difficult and unforgiving. You thought Beal Valley was intense? Wait until you see Dundrod.

Well that was short sharp & sweet !!

been unable to get in any practice this week, but slowly improving and getting to like the place. This vertion in particular.

had what felt like a nice setup, but didnt even get a chance to warm up my tyres.

From the start I just tried to stay sensible, I quite taken by suprise by a fast approachin Hondaa, no idea at the time who that was or what had happened. but let the car by,
I just dropped in behind and just decided to be safe and sound behind I think Bernie and David.  all was going well until it was time to brake for the curves before the Hairpin.

I dont feel as I was going to fast or too close, so im not saying the guys in front braked early or anything.... but I had to lock up solid to try to miss David but sadly i kept the car under as much control as i could but bumped his NSR wheel. Im so Sorry this happened.  I held back as one should and allowed David to try to sort himself aout al let him on his was.

Sadly ony made another Kilometre or so before I touched the verge by the tiniest amount, enough at this place to be given short thrift.  as soon as i had noticed the black tarmac and the blue sky had prettily changed places, that was that.

Im glad i managed to get on the grid tonight, but would have been nice to have lasted longer.

I Sincerely hope I did not cause too much damage by my nudge of the other cars NSR Wheel.  my opologies again.

hope race is going well for you all.

I'm so glad this awful place is behind us that I could cry hot, salty tears. I do admire the insane devotion that Pearson puts into places like this and IoM, but for me they are extremely difficult to get through because I can't see where I'm going. The green landscape and the gray tarmac blend into some sort of haze that I can't seem to penetrate.

I spent far too much time here trying just to complete seven laps. Only this morning was I able to accomplish that. So my plan was simply to take it easy, drive four-minute laps, stay out of the way of leaders lapping me, and hope that attrition would do its ugly work. I would have bet some serious money that not more than three drivers would finish. That five were still running when I crashed out with one lap to go simply boggles my mind. I can't think of a more difficult place to drive, except maybe Brno.

Anyway, I've got enough money for Lotuses in the final two races at tracks that I really do enjoy. But first, a glass of some well-deserved wine for scoring a few points. I had no expectation of that happening tonight at all!  Smiley

Just like Pepe I was suffering the same track panorama trauma , my old frazzled brain couldnt process the information fast enough on the speedy bits to decode braking points in the blare of track side foliage . Not helped by copious practice time spent on the newer track version . In Qually I had more offs than Christine Keelers panties and one attempt to get back on track got me DQ'd for "reversing on track " which didn't happen , I did drive the wrong way to backtrack through the spuds to find my way back to the asphalt .
In the race I was chugging along nicely at the rear when about lap 5 ish,  I touched a single blade of grass at the track edge , my car slid off into the fencing and that was me done .

Grats to the winners and losers whoever you are .

I don't think it was me : nobody touched my rear wheel or I don't feel any contact.

Yes, the start was difficult because Eric Bilodeau didn't react and during a fraction of second I didn't know if I had to go left, right ...or to rearend him.
Except the start, the race was OK without any big issue.
I let pass Philippe when I understood he was really quicker than me (5 seconds/lap) but he had an accident at the hairpin on the final lap ...very bad luck, Philippe !
So I could be very happy finishing 3rd behind Axel and Ricardo who were at a top level.

Sorry Francesco for the bump during the qualif ...and thank you to remove some points to Pepe for the championship  Grin

Now the championship, if I remove the worst result, should be :
1 Philippe 205
2 Rainier 202
3 Pepe 193
4 Bernie 148
5 Ricardo 112

Pepe told us he will drive Lotus at Road Ontario and Nassau, two not easy tracks, so the final rounds should be very exciting !

when I was solidly installed in 3rd place, I thought it was very smart to go straight at the hairpin...for the first time in my life, at the hairpin, and on the last lap of course   cursing  hang  hang

@Fran
you race on your pc and not on the server, so it is allways yours and not a server problem.
My problem was when I lapped you, you did all to not make a pass possible ... cost me 5 sec in the first sector, as you did not lift a little on the long straight...

I do love this kind of tracks and my aim was to survive, so I made a super forgiveable setup and allways braked much earlier than in a hotlap.

I had a look at the replay, this is not me but Philippe you rearended just before the hairpin on the 1st lap...
