Moderator's Report

Another fun race in this series. The narrow track and the wide cars meant that a lot of red paint was left on the stonework. No reported incidents.

Season 41 - Ferrari Challenge  ROUND 6  1967 SCX  Syracuse

"The sixth race in the Ferrari Challenge is in at Syracuse, a street circuit in Sicily. Situated on the outskirts of Syracuse, the 3.4 mile circuit on public roads is in the shape of a triangle, with two slow corners, an acute hairpin, and concrete walls bordering the fairly wide road for practically the entire distance and demanding maximum concentration. There is no real straight, but the three sides of the triangle each have fast, gentle curves. It is, in fact, what is known as a 'driver's circuit', leaving no margin for the slightest error.

The 1955 race was memorable in that Tony Brooks, a dental student from Manchester England, qualified his Connaught in third place on the grid behind the Maseratis of Luigi Musso and Luigi Villoresi. Brooks made a great start and diced for the lead with Musso over several laps before pulling a way to win by over 50 seconds. Thus, Brooks became the first British driver in the history of the sport to win a major race in a car designed, developed and built in Great Britain (unlike Segrave's Sunbeam which won the 1923 French G.P. and, the 1924 San Sebastian G.P. which was designed by Ernest Henry in in Suresnes, Paris). The Mercedes Benz team did not participate as the race did not count towards the driver’s championship, nevertheless Brooks race average of 99.05 mph over the 2 hour 24 minute race would have been hard to beat.

The track is a real challenge in the faster Sports Cars of 1967 and should make for some memorable racing. Good luck, gentlemen."

Andreas some mods have mod-specific files for some tracks and provide them with the install

so look into the folder if there is a syracuse.dat - if not just install the track

That was intense but fun. I had too many encounters with the wall to be competitive but had some fun along the way. Thanks especially to Evil for the close racing. Fun fun fun in the Sports Cars at this track.  Grin

Great racing guys and grats to the podium.
Syracuse is infamous for its lack of "safe" passing places, it requires that both drivers are aware of what is happening. The sticky straw bales and unforgiving stone walls only add to the terror.

Some great battles with Phil and Pete, although I had several mini freezes during the race that probably scared the wotsit out of the cars I was battling, each time I ended up in the haybales, which was better than hitting a wall!! I think I passed Pete 3 times, and 3 times I lost the place when the screen froze!!
On the last 2 laps I finally had a comfortable gap when Pete had a moment and Phil took up the chase, but I was determined to just cruise to the flag and watch him in my mirrors. Ironically, trying to drive 10% slower over 2 laps resulted in multiple near misses and scrapes with the walls!!

Big cars on a narrow track  Roll Eyes

I did had a few pinball moments, especially early on, but I got it together at the latter half of the race, reeling in on Tristan but by then was already much too late.

I've just received the repair bill from the Ferrari garage to sort out all of the scraped red paint. Yikes!

Bravo to our podium finishers!

No cinch deal this circuit.  It might be a classic countryside setting but the stone walls make it akin to Monaco.  It takes no prisoners.

Dropped a place to Phil off the start from a very tight grid but got it back shortly after from Clive scuffing the bales on the exit to Curva Carpinteri.  Held station for a few laps til coming through the esses after the SFline to find skid marks all over the road.  Fearing a massive shunt up ahead, I eased up a touch and this gave Clive his chance at a pass.  I thought it might be a bluff but it wasn't and I took a solid hip-check to the walls.  Luckily, the car wasn't damaged.  Got back in the groove and started to power back with little hope of improving my situation but a mighty shunt between Pete and Clive cleared my way for an assault on Phil.  Again, I didn't figure to have much hope in gaining a place but a slight slip from PT on the exit to Curva Carpinteri on Lap12 gave me the chance to slip by on the straight following.  Next up the road was Andreas going well and over the next laps, I found that I was closing in.  Hmmm...  By Lap23, it was game on.  Over those final laps, Andreas and I engaged in some fiercesome combat and a couple of times, I managed to draw alongside.  I finally managed to make the pass but AG came back strong on the straight to retake P4.  On the last lap, it was looking pretty solid for Andreas to make it home in P4 but yet again, Curva Carpinteri reared its ugly little head.  AG scraped the bales on corner entry and it cost him all his speed for the straight following.  Made the pass comfortably to make it home in a surprising finish.  Great action, Andreas!  Smiley
