Season 41 – 1955 Grand Prix – Round 8 – Works - Oakes Field

The eighth and final round of Season 41 takes us to Nassau in the Bahamas. The first Nassau Trophy Road Races meeting for Sports Cars was held in 1954 on the Windsor Field Course. For 1957, the meeting was moved to another airfield location, the 5 mile Oakes Course, which was closer to the main population areas on the island. The new course, despite being quite bumpy in places, was relatively well-received, though
there were a number of close shaves near the pits as it was too close to the racing line. To combat this, the race direction of the track was changed to clockwise in 1958. The circuit was also shortened to 4.5 miles by cutting out the original Blackbeard's Bend and Ecky's Twist, whilst a new left-right-left corner combination was built to connect the Sassoon Straight and Bethell's Pass, cutting out the tight hairpin which had previously taken the cars off the runway. Due to much needed track repairs and the lack of additional funding by the Bahamian government, as well as competition from more races running in December, the event was discontinued after the 1966 meeting. It is the clockwise 4.5 mile Oakes Course that we will be using for tonight's race.

I've done the maths. There are 274 people in the running to take the championship. Bring it on and GLA.

I'm hoping to make this one but I'm likely to be running on Lemsip as our granddaughter has kindly donated her latest nursery bug!

It was a really fun ending!!!
I had some advantage of having enough coins to race a Mercedes, and that was fine. I think everyone was fighting for the title Smiley

But!!!! An incredible misfortune hit me when I put the car on the grid in default setup .... not enough gas and the steering wheel incorrectly adjusted .......... well, let's have fun, anyway!

Until halfway through the race there was some hope, I had a good advantage, I think I would leave the pits well behind Bennett, but before entering the pit or a lap before, I lost a precious 400 m, I believe.
But the car is light and the fun is interesting. I came back and had help from some drivers who didn't show any resistance, Farina almost stopped the car, thanks! ......and when I approached to try the 2nd position, I made another mistake, this one fatal for my steering wheel that got crooked, game over !!!
But when I messed up before I got into boxing, my chances were gone, Bennett was straight and strong...... no one could stop him!

Congrats for champ  Bennett !!!!! Smiley

Hi Jonny,

Such bad luck for you. You and Clive were mighty quick in P1 and P2 and I was more than happy with my P3 on the grid. I usually mess the starts up but tonight I pulled away quickly without over-revving the delicate 55 engine. You both had better lap pace than me and I had a scary moment or two trying to stick with you both, whilst, at the same time, trying to work on the numbers in the Championship. Jonny was on 190 points and I had 204. If he finished 1st in this race and I was 3rd, the Championship would be mine by just ONE point. (Jonny 240, Pete 241).

With this in mind, my goal was just to keep position and keep everyone else behind me. Don't take any risks, Pete. The extra Merc power helped enormously and I was glad that I had taken the Gordini out in a couple of earlier rounds, saving me valuable tokens for the season finale. Choosing the right car for the right track is a huge part of the fun in these series. I love the token system.

A few laps in and Clive was thrashing about with his gearbox looking for a slot that wasn't there. This put him in the undergrowth and allowed me to come past him at Eckie's Twist. Jonny was still romping away but he had a moment all by himself a few laps later and the last I saw of him was his Merc driving across the scrub into the pit lane. I thought he'd gone for a coffee and a bacon sandwich btu he was soon back and chasing hard.

But what a series this has been. I still can't believe that I won in my Rookie year as a 55 Pro; mostly down to the misfortune of others and the absence of Yannick in the later rounds, but I'll take a win wherever I can.   Grin  Leo was also sorely missed. Come back soon.

Anyway, thanks to everyone at UKGPL for organising and hosting this series. I'm off to celebrate with a cup of tea and a paracetemol. (I'm all out of Lemsip, Clive).

Hope to see you at some Christmas FUN races soon.

A great race, but missing a few of the hot guns.
I had the pace to stay with Jonny, but I could not understand how he was gaining so much time out of the slow corners lol......low fuel appears to be the answer ?
For some reason I totally lost my muscle memory for the gearbox at half distance and had several laps of  excursions and spins. That dropped me back from Jonny and allowed Pete to sweep past whilst I thrashed around in the bushes. It was so bad I almost allowed Clive Loynes to catch me in his Connaught!!!! Imagine how embarrassing that could have been  Roll Eyes  Wink
I gave myself a hard talk and backed off just a little to avoid any more incidents and settled in to a steady rhythm to  chase Pete and Jonny.

Then I noticed that I could see both Pete and Jonny up ahead. JJ had had his incident, so I slowly upped the pace. Jonny pitted and suddenly I was 2nd again with Pete teasing me with glimpses of his tailpipes  wub
I slowly ramped up the speed but I strongly suspect tha Pete was "managing" the gap over the last few laps .

2nd was good against the Mercs and anyway, even if I had won the race Pete would still have taken the points to win the season  I Am Not Worthy

Grats to Doni as well for securing the TEAM Trophy against those Soggy Bottom pretenders. Blue Moose has punched above it's weight again, but we could use some more weight if anyone cares to join us  lol..

I neglected to do any pre-race trials for this round relying instead on past performances with the Ferrari 625.  That didn't help my cause and it wasn't until the race was half done that I got a comfy handle on the red car.  Pleased, at least, to see that I cut a new personal best in the car in my pursuit of Fulvio and Ricky.

Gutted to see that Jonny had failed to load his race setup and had to pit for fuel and later shunted off.  Bad luck, amigo.  A podium placing for the season at least, JJ.

I had only one drama.  On Lap03 after passing a foundering Clive Loynes the lap prior, I gassed it a bit too hard coming off Carlton and the Ferrari skipped off into the heather.  Clive regained the place and went to net a good P3 placing.  The gaffe cost me about 4-5 seconds which I could have used later.  Other than that, it was a good run.

Seriously impressed with my Blue Moose teammie, Clive Gardner, for a blistering run in qualifying and scoring a close P2 in the race.  This vaulted the Evil One to a splendid overall P2 in the final tabulations.  Well done, mate.

Hearty congratulations to Pete for the race win and taking the top step on the podium for the championship honours.

Somewhat disappointed in a thin entry for this final round.  FIFA?

Phil had a curious outing after a good qualifying session.  An early spin set him well back and he just never got on the beam after that.  Phil still ailing from his recent hospital stay, I expect.  Hope you're better soon, PT.

Keen observers will have noted from the tabulations chart that I ran the Ferrari 625 for the entire season.  No fooling about with the messy tokens for me.  Just get in a drive!  The car wasn't the best anywhere but wasn't the worst either.  Eight races run and eight finishes.  Can't be bad.

My thanks to the club for hosting and to Phil for organizing.  CYA for S42 and have a great holiday season, chaps!  Smiley

My thanks

I ran  little wide and hit a post on lap 1 which damaged the car and made left hand turns very difficult. Hence one of the many spins you saw. I decided to press on and try to finish. Anything can happen in these races so it was worth continuing.

Grats to Pete for the race win and championship , very well deserved.

Congratulations to Pete on taking both the race win and championship Huh?.

Don't think that I was ever in the running for this season and my mistake at Valentino put paid to any chance that I had.

As for this race, I made early mistakes whilst trying to follow other cars early on and was lucky to still be on the podium at the end.

I made another mistake towards the end, which let Fulvio get the taste of blood in the water. He seemed to have got his second wind and another lap would have probably seen me drop to 4th.

Thanks for the season and Merry Christmas to everyone.

You will probabably just want to use v1 (refuel only)

The v2 also has tyre wear, with the UKGPL-specific variant having very aggressive tyre wear (intentional).

LOL, Dave is right, you must be using the V2 patch with tyre wear. Use V1 that just does refuelling with no tyre wear.
