Season 42 – 1967 F1 – Round 1 – Privateers - Spa-Francorchamps

The first race in the 1967 F1 Privateers series finds us in Belgium at Spa-Francorchamps. Designed in 1920 the original triangle-shaped course used public roads between the Belgian towns of Francorchamps, Malmedy, and Stavelot. The track was intended to have hosted its inaugural race in August 1921, however the first car race was held at the circuit in 1922. Spa was the fastest road circuit in Europe at the time, and it had a nasty reputation for being dangerous and very fast. It was a circuit known to be one for the brave, and most drivers were frightened of it. The old Spa circuit was unique in that speeds were consistently high with hardly any let-up at all for 3–4 minutes. This made it an extraordinarily difficult mental challenge (& ridiculously easy to crash).

Going well for about 12 laps. all i wanted to do was finish. lost my place to Albert when i spun off into a field somewhere..

all the fields and meadows look the same at Spa LOL.   Albert did well as we had a decent gap, but I screwed up and was off track long enough for him to pass me.

Try as hard as I might and I just couldn't catch him. nice drive Albert.  well thats Spa out of the way. nice to be back racing GPL though. here's to a good season 42.

Sometimes GPL DQs drivers because they have to go "backwards" on the grass in order to find a way back onto the circuit.  When this happens Fran, carry on racing the moderators can reinstate you after the race.

Note to the chatters who were busy typing away while Albert and I were trying to finish our last lap: SHUT UP! Chat is prohibited during qualifying and while the race is in progress. You clowns destroyed my frame rate every time you posted another illegal message. I nearly went into the weeds twice. How I finished that lap in one piece is one of my life's enduring mysteries.

I'm not going to tell the moderators who you were. Don't thank me. Just don't do it again, please.

Pepe

We have a Trouble Shooting section on the Guide for New Members page that has a link to a thread about FPS drops caused by on-line chat.

You are right to point out that drivers MUST NOT chat whilst qualifying is still in progress. However, messages still pop up when drivers leave and join the server and there is nothing we can do about that.

So I suggest you look at the thread above and see if the fix described in there helps.

I think it were messages no chat Roll Eyes

I was watching...

Shame my race ended in 12th lap by an engine failure, even I had tried to shift as smooth as possible and gplra shows only few speedshifts...

However, messages still pop up when drivers leave and join the server and there is nothing we can do about that.

Understood, but a notice generated by GPL about a retirement isn't the same thing as a bunch of guys crowing about how they finished. One can't be avoided; the other can. I'll check the link you cited. Maybe it will help. What will help more is that drivers follow some simple rules: Don't chat during qualifying and don't chat until every driver has crossed the finish line. That's not so hard, is it?

That having been said, I tried for two weeks to finish a single 14-lap race with the AIs and never got past the halfway point. I figured that attrition would take out at least 50% of the drivers and maybe even more. What I didn't want it to take out was me. I figured if I went with the Honda for the first couple of races, where I wasn't going to be competitive against the big guns anyway, I'd be able to put myself into an Eagle later in the season.

The plan looked to be moderately successful at the start of qualifying, where I found myself in 3rd place for the first five minutes with a personal best of 3:32. Five minutes later I was 10th, still with my personal best. Hmmm. That doesn't look good. But maybe the guys I absolutely, positively have to beat like Eduardo and the two Davids will show up with Lotuses. Nope, they're in BRMS and a Honda. Drat the luck! As the race quickly unfolds, I find myself chasing Dave Curtis and being chased by David Rainier. This went on for like forty days and forty nights, not more than a few seconds separating the three of us. Eventually, they went away and I ended up sixth overall, not having overtaken a single soul. Will I take it without a whimper? You know it.

You are showing as a DNS so you will not have spent any tokens or earned your "start money" so you should still have 10 tokens. Hover your mouse over your points in the championship table to check.

I fully agree !!
Maybe, moderators should give penalties for chatting whilst other drivers are still on the tracks, especially during the race.
In a first time, all drivers should be informed but I am not sure everybody is reading the posts.

About my race, I followed Pepe carefully during the first 7 laps (50%) and then decided to increase the pace. Unfortunately I made a small mistake on lap 10 by putting a wheel in the grass. That was enough to end my race...

You are quite right Fran. You have highlighted a flaw in the system, until you score points and you have a total on the championship table it isn't possible to check your tokens. However, rest assured you have 10 tokens.

Things started to go wrong from the start when I found myself sat in the pits in a Lotus and not the BRM I should have been in , so a quick disco and re join .

Qually went OK as I was using race fuel and taking things easy just to get familiar with this "new" Spa track . I made a decent enough start following the pack until I caught the track edge with a rear wheel and found myself sliding into boondocks . By the time I had recovered the track the competition were out of sight .
I was left with my thoughts contemplating a long lonely race and completely lost concentration , forgot what part of the track I was on and suddenly remembered as the Barn at Stavelo appeared before my very eyes !

The local farmer had forgot to leave the doors open which didn't help as they were made of solid stuff . Race over as my poor BRM did not survive the 160 mph impact .

No sweat as I didn't expect to survive to the finish anyway .

Grats to the podium and all who made it home
