Moderator's Report

Summary
A brilliant victory for Clive Loynes, storming through the field from last place on lap one to win in emphatic style. He made the most of the awesome speed of the Mercedes 196 SL. Tom Johnson drove very well, avoiding all the mayhem and grabbed second spot in his Maserati. Following moderation, Pete Bennett inherited the final place on the podium in his Vanwall.

Server replay time: 0h05m07s

Lap 2 - Parabolica – Phil Thornton and Evil Clive
Phil is leading into Parabolica with Clive and Cookie in pursuit. Phil’s SL is making a big hole in the air and is dragging Clive’s Vanwall along at a rapid pace. As Phil brakes, Clive closes in but he doesn’t slow down enough and he rear-ends Phil causing both cars to spin off into the gravel trap. Fortunately both cars could continue apparently unharmed.

Phil did nothing wrong.

Clive’s Vanwall is nimbler than the heavy SL and so he can brake later but given the extra tow it is not possible to brake in the normal place. Clive needed to brake earlier. The overhead camera view shows the distance between first and third doesn’t change appreciably under braking whereas the gap between first and second closes considerably. So, Phil didn’t brake early, it was simply that Clive misjudged the tow and left his braking too late. Consequently Clive must shoulder the responsibility for the incident.

Server replay time: 0h10m57s

Lap 4 - Parabolica – Fulvio Policardi, Pete Bennett, Doni Yourth, Bob Simpson, Phil Thornton and Dave Rainier
Fulvio is leading Francesco Molteni and Pete Bennett along the straight towards Parabolica. Fulvio brakes quite late and runs wide giving Francesco, who judged his braking perfectly, the opportunity execute a very clean overtake on the inside. Fulvio’s wide line also gives Pete the opportunity to overtake. Pete hugs the inside grass verge and gets alongside as Fulvio applies the gas. Fulvio’s car slews sideways into Pete and a massive impact is registered which throws both cars into the air. Doni is very close and cannot avoid the wreckage. Bob is next along and he manages to slow down a lot but Doni’s car lands on him. Phil tries to brake but can’t come to a stop before hitting Bob. Finally Dave rounds the curve and cannot stop either but fortunately for the following cars, the impact blasts a gap in the wreckage for the rest of the field to pass through. Fulvio, Doni and Dave were out. Bob, Pete and Phil could continue albeit with damaged cars.

Pete, Doni, Bob, Phil and Dave did nothing wrong.

Fulvio accelerated too hard and this caused his rear wheels to lose traction and slew his car into Pete. It is quite possible that Fulvio’s late braking and subsequent slide overheated the tyres and so when he tried to apply the power and accelerate out of the corner, there was much less grip than he expected. Regardless of the circumstance, when fighting for position it is important to maintain control of the car at all times.

Server replay time: 0h11m42s

Lap 4 - Curva Nord – Bernie Darwin and Leo Menegucci
Bernie is in a Maserati and is leading Leo in a Ferrari 555 past the pits with Clive Loynes close behind. As they enter the Curva Nord (replay time 0h11m30s), Bernie takes the low racing line (below the yellow centre line marker) and Leo takes the high racing line. Clive decides to stay low. At about a quarter of the way into the turn (replay time 0h11m38s), Bernie moves to a higher line just above the yellow centre line marking. By this time Leo had gained on Bernie and was along side with about a 50% overlap. The cars continue around the banking with Leo and Bernie side-by-side and with Clive a few metres back. After further 4 seconds contact is made. Both Leo and Bernie fly off the track and are out of the race. Clive is unaffected and can continue in his Mercedes W196 SL.

Leo did nothing wrong. Having seen Bernie go low, Leo went high and maintained a racing line quite close to the armco barrier. From entering the curve until Leo had gained the overlap, Bernie’s Maserati was not visible from Leo's cockpit view. It was reasonable for Leo to assume Bernie had remained on the low racing line.

Bernie moved from just below the yellow centre line marker, to just above it as the Mercedes loomed large in his mirrors. Leo’s Ferrari had disappeared from Bernie’s mirrors as soon as they had entered the curve. Bernie should have realised where Leo was and left enough room, which he did (just). But expecting two cars to race side-by-side above the yellow centre line marking is rather optimistic. Bernie’s move left didn’t result in immediate contact. In fact, both cars continued for another 4 seconds before contact was made. Examination of the server replay and Bernie’s client replay reveals that there was warp contact.

Bernie drove his higher line as straight as could be expected and the final contact was due to warp. However, it would have been prudent for Bernie to have ignored the Mercedes and maintained the low racing line throughout the entire turn (including the exit). It is possible to drive three abreast on the banking but all drivers need good connections because the cars bounce about on the bumps making warp contact more likely.

Season 42 - 1955GP – Round 3 – Monza

For the third race in the 1955 Grand Prix series we visit the “Cathedral of Speed” in Italy. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is a race track located near the city of Monza, north of Milan.  Built in the Royal Villa of Monza park in a woodland setting, the circuit has gone through numerous changes over the years.  Perhaps the most striking feature in the park is the steep banked (sopraelevata) curves on the now defunct 10Km variant, first used in 1955.  The original circuit (used between 1922 and 1933) also had an oval section but the banked curves were not as wide or as steep as the later 1955 variant.  The banked circuit was used on four occasions for Formula 1 races; in 1955, 1956, 1960 and finally in 1961 when it was decided that Formula 1 cars were just too fast to be safe on the oval track.   The banked oval section was last used in any capacity in 1969.  From 1962 onwards, the Formula 1 Grand Prix was held on the "road circuit" which by the early 1970s was also deemed to be too fast for Formula 1 cars.  Two chicanes were introduced for 1972 Italian Grand Prix, one at the Ascari curve and another on the approach to the Curva Grande.  Tonight we will relive the dramatic race in 1955 on the full 10Km circuit complete with steep bankings and no chicanes. Have a look at this video (unfortunately no sound) of the 1955 race for inspiration.

Disappointing race for me. A couple of incidents that were not my fault (IMO) and I ended up with a damaged engine which was down on power and expired after 4 laps. The draft is very strong here but the brakes are still rubbish so extra care is needed to avoid rear-ending people  Sad. It could have been a great race  Sad.

Sorry about the close grid at the start. Very pleased to see everyone was sensible and we didn't have a massive pile-up. Rookie hosting error, must do better next time!

This is a bug of the track! If you go out at Parabolica -> game crashs, even the "gapfix patch" does not help...

I blew my engine...

Sigh...

A nasty shunt at the Parabolique.  Considering the dynamics of the crash, I consider it sufficient to warrant standing down for the next two races in simulating injury.  There are consequences.

My sincere apologies Doni and all that was involved in the Para mayhem. I lost it accelerating and ended inside on Pete car and rebounded on following cars  ban death hang

Convinced to do 15 laps i stop my car after the finish line but seeing no flags made me doubt. At this point the damage is done ......at least one place lost.

Got lucky and avoided all the crashes, and settled in to draft with Axel. I was hoping we would be able to build up a nice gap, but when Axel's engine blew, I knew I would be a sitting duck if the pack caught me.
Instead of the pack I saw Clive in the streamliner cutting through the field. I knew with no one to draft with, he would catch me quickly. When he caught me he drove past me like I was sitting still. I tried to stay close enough to get a tow, but the difference in top speed was to great and there weren't enough tight corners to even it out. Congrats Clive and Clive! Thanks for the fun race all!

Grats on the win Clive. I saw you get punted into the gravel at Parabolica on lap 1. You did very well to work your way back through the field to win despite going off at Parabolica again on lap 3? I saw that too, and at the time I thought to myself as I went past "Clive will be getting frustrated now, I have to stay calm". But it looks like you remained cool, well done  thumbup1 thumbup1 thumbup1. It is easy to throw it away when things don't go to plan.

Cheers Phil.

I outbraked myself at Parabolica on lap three and I expect you heard me cursing as you went by.  However, it probably saved me from being in the wrong place at the wrong time when all hell broke loose a bit later.

From where I was sitting it looked like and old fashioned Monza pickup race.

Once Axel had blown his engine and you had departed, there wasn't another fast car in the field and so I just kept it steady and let the Merc do the work.

I thought that Tom was going to make life difficult but in the end the speed of the Merc prevailed.

Thanks for the race.

Tough luck Fran, you were having a good race.

First of all big apologies to Phil for the nudge on lap 2? at Parabolica.
I had a great start in the Vanwall and was actually backing off into Curve Grande to avoid the 3 Mercs forming a grey wall ahead. Once I got the Vanwall into the slipstream of the battleships I felt that the pattern of the race was set. I would be towed around for 17 laps waiting for an error ahead to be able to steal a place on the podium.
Then Clive L and another Merc tangled at Parabolica on Lap 1, so it was Phil in front and myself tucked into 2nd  scared. I was puzzled by how slow the Mercs were under acceleration. Again following Phil out of Parabolica I had to lift off the gas to avoid "pushing" him and this was repeated through Curve Grande and Lesmos??
I was thinking that if I could stay close to Phil he would tow me through the race and I felt that my chances had improved.

But, heading down to Parabolica on lap 2 I was, again, having to lift fractionally as the draft dragged me forward. It is clear that I got it wrong and Phil was an innocent victim. Sorry Phil  Sad
I thought that I had braked early enough, but it did not match what Phil was doing by about 5%. Under full braking in the Vanwall steering was difficult and I was stuck with either hoping that Phil would come off the brakes into the corner and my car would just avoid the rear ending. But by the time the collision looked likely, I was too close to lift off the brakes and steer wide into the gravel.
The touch did not appear that bad from my perspective but, it was certainly enough to send both of us into the gravel trap. I did cruise for the next lap waiting for Phil to regain his place but my prib did not register his presence. So I pressed on and hunted down Bernie, Fulvio and the clutch of Vanwalls ahead. Just as I caught them there was a hairdressers convention on the exit of Parabolica and I was suddenly launched up to 3rd place!!!

Tom was half a lap ahead and Fran was out of sight. More worrying was that Clive Loynes had recovered and was closing fast in his Merc. There was no defence against the speed of the Merc and I was hoping to sling my tow rope onto his rear bumper, but he escaped!! and slowly progressed to take 1st place from Tom.

In the final laps I was starting to catch Fran and I did wonder what had happened as I caught him at the end of Lap 15?? We crossed the line side by side and then he suddenly slowed, I wondered if he had blown his engine or run out of fuel?? His answer above explains that. Hard luck Fran.
I must get a new battery for my calculator as I crossed the finish line with 6galls of fuel still sloshing around in the tank.

Currently 3rd on the table but I fully expect a penalty and pleased with getting some pace out of the Vanwall on such a fast track.

Quite a race! The narrow grid took me by surprise and I was happy to be on the inside rather than squeezed between two other cars. My start was a slow one but I had a good view going into Curve Grande to avoid any contact. Some fun close racing for a few laps making good use of a tow before the Parabolica incident on Lap4. My tough little Vanwall bounced back onto the track, albeit down on power and not wanting to turn left at all. I couldn't catch Clive as no tow was available to me and he was being pulled along by Fulvio. A lonely drive to the end but I was enjoying the 1955 Mod graphics at this fab track.

Very happy for the P4 and to be leading the table at this stage. It won't last long so I'll enjoy it while it lasts.  Roll Eyes

How can you not hold your line man? Really? If you kept it inside, there is even a line for reference, it is safe enough.
