Season 42 - 1965 Round 5  Snetterton

The first circuit made use of the perimeter roads and one of the runways to create a fast 2.71 mile circuit. A signature feature was the almost mile-long Norwich Straight, which ran parallel to the A11 road and culminated in a tight hairpin bend. The course outline was marked by sand-filled oil drums, topped rather eccentrically by Christmas trees. The early meetings featured rather primitive facilities and entry to the circuit infield could only be achieved during breaks in track running, due to there being no bridges or underpasses.

By 1965, the first changes were made to the circuit. Speeds out of the final Paddock Corner were becoming a concern and a chicane was inserted, named after Jim Russell, who had established the world's first racing driver school at the circuit in the late 1950s. Unfortunately, the new corner was far too tight and motorcycle racers in particular found it almost impossible to negotiate, so it was eased in 1967. The revised corner was much quicker; a flat-out-if-you-dare kind of affair, which saw you hit the pit lane wall if you got it wrong – and many did...

Elsewhere on the circuit, a former gunnery mound alongside the pit straight was excavated and used to form the approach banks of a new vehicle bridge across the track at the Esses, and there was a general improvement over the years in facilities.

Snetterton remained a temple to high speed during the 1960s and early 70s and despite this, remained relatively safe for the times. One of the major factors in this was the lack of much to hit – grassy fields surrounded much of the circuit, while other areas featured escape roads formed by the old runways.

I've tried several times (Tuesday 2 am London time) to join UKGPL11 and I keep getting the "timed out" message.

It is probably my end.
I still have unresolved issues with my ISP device since a software update over the weekend.

If possible, please try connecting to any other 60FPS servers & advise if successful.

Race server will be UKGPL07.

Thanks for mentioning it.

Retired the car about lap 25. The BT7 is super fun to drive but in my hands it is so much slower than the field. Stefano kept in interesting for many laps but he dropped back when the lead cars went past.

Great race, I enjoyed that one.

Had a great battle at the start with Dave, was alone for a while and then had another awesome one with him nearer the end, thanks for that Smiley

See you all at Brands Hatch

First of all, I want to apologize for my lap mistake with 3 laps to go, I didn't see the car in the mirror. Then I'm still too slow running with the standard setup. Can you tell me where I can find example setups to learn how to make my car run faster. Thank you.
I had a lot of fun

No problem Stefano. Just try to notice the blue flags which indicate a lapping car about to pass.

I had a great fun race chasing down various people - usually Coopers, with my BT11. Smiley

Setups are very personal so you should try to understand what changes do what to the handling. What mod are you racing next? I don't think we can post attachments here.

Okay! Thanks, I'll try to search the net to understand each other better. Yesterday I practically ran almost without using sixth gear because the ratios were too long.

I would like to help but I'm rubbish in these cars Roll Eyes  However, IMO the setups are not the secret. Bob is absolutely right, setups are very personal.

The default setups are stable and predictable so they are a good starting point.

I suggest you download the server replay and watch what the other drivers do. You can use the GPL replay analyzer to examine what gears, revs, corner speed etc the other drivers used. That would be more helpful that experimenting with a setup that is tuned to another driver's controller (steering wheel etc) and driving style.

Once you have understood what you need to do to go faster, you can then start to adjust the setup to achieve a specific goal.

 Smiley

Hello pilots

More fuel at the end of the game, too bad because we had fun with Cookie the whole race.

Congratulations to all and thank you for the organization.

I can offer some basic guidelines for setups, but I 100% agree with Bob that setups are individual and personal. What everyone is looking for is a car that does what YOU expect and WHEN you expect it. No drama, just smooth ( and hopefully quick) progress.

You mention that you were only using 5th gear. OK , so your overall gear ratios were too high. One of the first things that I always do at a new circuit/car combination is ....before any other adjustments.
Do a racing start from the pits......In an ideal world 1st gear will get you moving without bogging down so that the revs drop out of the power band, or immediately hitting the red line so that you have to upshift to 2nd immediately. Neither are what you want. Then, remembering what happened, continue the lap at a comfortable pace until you get to the longest straight and give it full beans. Ideally you should arrive at the braking point for the next corner in the highest gear and with maybe 500revs left to allow for a slipstream during the race. Remember what happened and quit to the pits/Car Setup.
You can now adjust the gears, either individually on each ratio, or as a complete gear set by changing the final drive parameter. You might need to do this a couple of times to get things "in the ball park" as your overall pace improves, but as a start you should at least be using all the power available.

Then take a look at this as a starting point.

Hope this helps  Wink

That was lots of fun  Grin   Exactly why I drive GPL.

I just love the BT7 on any track and this is no exception. Chucking it into the first turn flat out is a blast and leaping through the final chicane is just as much fun  Grin Grin Grin Grin

I made my usual slow start (I must learn how to do these better in every mod) and lost two places before T1. Angex and Evil were my main competition for the evening and I spent many a lap just an arms length from the gearbox of Andreas' Lotus. He had the speed on the straights but I was nippier round the twisty bits, but not quick enough to get past. Lap after lap was like this until I went into T1 a little too hot and clip Clive's RL wheel. This span me onto the grass, I bounced off a bank and then, as a passenger I plopped back in front of Bob who I can only apologise to. Sorry, Bob.

A few other scares along the way and a short dice with Tris but overall a fun race with lots of super close racing. Respect to you guys.

Good to see Will finishing another race. He turned 17 the other day so he's been out for a real driving lesson now. Thankfully he's not started to drive our Audi A2 as fast as his BT11.

Stafano - as for setups, it depends how you drive. I use H-Shifter and clutch and brake with my right foot. To accommodate this I have Front Brake balance of 59% in the 65 cars. Makes them much more stable under braking and fills you with confidence. Others on here will disagree which only goes to confirm that we all do things differently.I'm happy to share some setups if you like.
